You appear to have posted two photos of hot dogs. That second photo certainly doesn't look like sausages... at least to a non-American.

What do sausages look like where you're from?
There are a lot more kinds of sausages than there are of hot dogs, a sub-set of sausages.
High-end sausage can be amazing, but for a quick meal on the run, hot dogs are much easier to eat.
you can achieve speeds near that of Hotdog preperation.

Actually, I was thinking in terms of the actual eating.
I make it a point to always chew my food properly, and most sausages have enough substance and texture that they need to be masticated thoroughly, while a hot dog can practically be bolted down.
Are you kidding? Sausage 100% of the time. Hot dawgs are poor people food.
Hot dogs. But you have to get the good kind, Hebrew National jumbo kosher franks. They're all beef, obviously, and not the gross parts you hear about hot dogs being made from.

They're usually brown for starters, not that weird orange-red that hot dogs are.
The best sausages I've ever had though are from Northern Thailand and range from moderately spicey to mouth destroyingly hot.Show Image(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f7/Thanin_market_chiang_mai_sausage.jpg)
I don't eat meat anymore, but when I did I always preferred sausage.

Before the page fully loaded I immediately went to reply to say that sausages win hands down.

It's difficult to be sure, because,, a world without Hot-dogs would be awful.. even if we had unlimited sausage..
So... perhaps, they're not substitutes...
Oh I also forgot, I am from a cattle station and we will be doing a killer soon (i.e. cutting up our own meat) does anyone want to see how sausages are made?
Bonus nachos photos from the house, there were no cattle near by to take a photo of unfortunately:Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/z5JlOFD.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/3ETTuIV.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/kGxhJoz.jpg)

Hands down sausage > hot dog, At our local farmers market these germans have a truck that they sell meat they produce, in the summer they grill up bratwursts with sauerkraut and grilled onions on these amazing buns  they're only there in the summer and now I want one so bad.

Why would you go into so much detail. Brats are my spirit sausage. I want to eat them all.
Now I'm hungry. :-[

They're my favorite, but it's like on a spiritual level, yknow?
Or maybe I just made it up to illustrate my extreme lust for brats.
