Title: Internet Nerds
Post by: tp4tissue on Wed, 16 December 2015, 21:22:36
This young college kid asked me,  hey Tp4,   If you had a Pretty girlfriend,  would you still spend so much time on the computer and the internets..

How would  y'all geekhackers answer this. and post your approximate age.

I do, and I don't.

I'm almost 26.

So the answer is no, you wouldn't.

Considering all my time not working is spent either sleeping or alone on the internet, I would have to say yes since even a small amount of time would be less than 100%

My last girlfriend I could only communicate with through the computer unless I wanted to spend a few hundred dollars... so... I think the correct thing to say is "if Sifo didn't have the Internet could he still get a girlfriend?"

No female on Geekhack haz pmed the Tp4 for phone number (http://i.imgur.com/LjKDAWD.gif)..   Surely it's not from Tp4's lack of trying. (http://i.imgur.com/BUF5WZO.gif)

I don't know.

A large majority of people who are now my close friends I have found through the internet and talk to everyday via mumble (VOIP) or various IRC channels. Although I spend a lot of time socialising with people IRL and meeting new people I never connect with them as well as internet people, I guess, because similar people to me are few and far between.

So to answer your question I think I'd have to like someone similar to me in the sense that we both would spend a lot of time on the internet, because otherwise I'd stop socialising with my friends.

Gone are the times of a high school gold fish that you can see everyday through forced interaction.

Having gone through this before - you spend less time.

Nerds have always had it rough. The internet just provides an infinite time sink.

My girlfriend mostly cuts into my weekend time, due to the fact that we live ~1 hour from each other. So no, it doesn't cut into my general internet time too much, but it DOES cut into my keyboard modding/painting/etc time. I'm fine with that. And it also creates weird situations where I'm hanging out with her and have to drop everything to enter a raffle...

Girlfriends take a lot of time, so I've experienced peaks and valleys when it comes to relationships and internet usage

29, girlfriend of 10 years, wow such millennial

I typed up like 3 paragraphs but decided I didn't want to get that much in to it. I've been on both sides of your "question". The periods of time where I spent too much time doing nerd **** and being selfish with my time, my relationship wasn't healthy and suffered greatly. Personal free time (read: nerd stuff) is important but if you aren't prepared to give up some of your free time to spend with your partner, my opinion is that you don't have time for a relationship.

Win/win if your partner is a nerd too.

Yeah, that's the thing. When I'm off during the day, I usually spend it on the computer unless I've got stuff to do. But on weekends and when my gf gets home from work, I tend to spend time with her.

"cuts into your weekend time" = better hope she's not reading this ;)

Obviously, if you want to maintain a relationship with someone, it will cut into nerd time.  There are many days when I actually want to nerd out and cancel my pre-arranged meeting with my girlfriend.  However, I also know that I am a human being, and I need love and companionship like anyone else, so it is in my best long term interest to maintain friendships and relationships.  It makes me happier than being all by lonesome with the computer.

Can confirm, spend plenty of time on GeekHack and have a pretty girlfriend.  It's just all about managing your time -- of course girlfriend comes before internet.
