Title: G80-8113 for the Wifey
Post by: Badwrench on Sat, 19 December 2015, 16:12:30
Since my wife spends a bit of her time at work in front of a computer, I decided it was time to upgrade her from the super dirty, worn out chicklet style microsoft board she has.  I was going to do a QFR for her, but since she uses the number pad a lot, I decided to go full sized.  The timing was perfect as I had just met heroinbob at a local meetup and he noted that he had a ton of these Cherry boards in various condition, but all with either mx browns or mx clears.  I decided to go with the clears.  I had intention of modding the board to remove the card slider, but just ran out of time.  I am still working on the modded case (heroinbob was awesome and sent a spare for me to play with) and will add it at a later date.  For now, I decided to do a clean paint job and change out the stock laser printed caps for some Tai Hao Dolch caps.  I still need to get some black blanks to swap for all the relengendables, but that isn't a big deal to me right now.  Special thanks to n__dles for sending me the ISO kit.  One issue I ran into was the cable.  I had some vinyl dye that I used years ago for some car trim and decided to use that to change the color of the cable to black.  Unfortunately, the dye reacted with the rubber and now a week later, still has not cured all the way.  I am hopeful that it will eventually cure and be good to go.  It currently still has just a bit of tack to it, but not coming off or leaving marks.

Thank you again to heroinbob for the huge hookup on the G80 and n__dles for the missing ISO kit.  Also and thank you to retrochick for the incoming metallic red Cherry logo sticker that will finish it off nicely.

Does that touchpad work? And it's nice to see one of these restored and in use instead of stripped for parts like we usually do. :D

Interesting layout, it will look great when you get the last few caps in place :thumb:

Thanks, I think she will like it.

Not 100% sure.  I have no way to test it at home with my ITX setup.  Will just have to give it a go once she gets it to work.  I am pretty sure it does though, it's all wired up.

I just straight up harvest the 8113 I got and tossed it. I really was curious about the touchpad but I didn't even think of it until after :(. Would be cool if you could test it out to see how well it works. I think it'd be fun to have a keyboard that does everything including pointing device.

That thing came out really well. That sticker is really going to tie it together.

Got a few things from some fellow geekhackers to finish off the board.  Red sticker from retrochick and some dcs sp crap bag caps from Damien.  Wifey loved the colorful caps and chose out several randoms other than the rainbow I made for the top row.

Oh well.  She had a ton of fun with looking through the random caps.  Since it is her board now, I just went along.

That's super cool! I'd also be interested to hear if the touchpad works.

Badwrench, came out very nice....
I particularly like the black/grey theme (way down in the pics - pre-colored keycaps)

Glad someone used one of these as a keeper (vs. harvesting).

Happy new year,

Paul (HB)

Thank you.  I don't mind the extra color on the board, especially since my wife was actually interested and looking throug caps to find more.
