Title: Fixing an SP c(r)ap
Post by: KaminKevCrew on Mon, 21 December 2015, 20:29:25
So, I recently bought an SP crap bag from one of the other users on this forum.

Never had a crap bag, so I figured I would get it when I could! Anyway, after having it for a few days, I was going through it today and found a very cool cap (note: I had already fixed the cap when I took this picture.): [attach=1]
Unfortunately, it had this issue:[attach=2]
As you can see, the stem was too big!!! Anyway, I attempted to put it on a switch, but that wasn't working at all, since the stem was simply way too thick. As such, I got out my jeweler's (a.k.a small) filing kit: [attach=3]
So, once I had those out, I proceeded to file the stem down (starting is the worst part, once you get the muscle memory down, it's not so bad):[attach=4] The file is not in the position that I was filing in that photo, that's just how it ended up on my hand :)
One side done:[attach=5]
Second side done: [attach=6]
Bonus shot of the amount of dust that filing one side creates(!):[attach=7]
And here it is once I cleaned the inside of the cap: [attach=8]
It almost looks like the ABS powder dissolved into the alcohol on the cotton swab - does anyone know if that's a thing?

So the first picture is the finished product, but here it is again! [attach=9]

Hopefully all of those turned out the right way around. Geekhack has been in the habit of rotating my photos lately. If they are upside down, I also have the photos hosted on imgur, so I'll link that if necessary!

This cap will eventually end up on a Planck with a unicorn puke, single row profile SA set :) (aka all of the caps will be at the same 0 degree incline, but they are of the SA profile, I believe, unless I've seriously missed something!)

That is too much work for a single cap. I have never understood the idea of paying for SP's scrap, and see it as an curious case when a company can profiting on its own bad parts and obsolete stock.

I mainly just wanted to have some spare keys that I can use without needing to take special care of them. Also, for a single key, I think it's fine. I wouldn't do that with an entire board, but for the one key, I thought it was pretty fun! Also, a lot of the caps in the basement are actually in pretty much perfect condition and I don't really understand why they're in the crap bag.
