EDIT: A bigger Dingus actually paid it
Ive never understood how/why people spend absurd amounts of money on a keycap.
That just blows my mind that a cap that is all of ~1 year old is for sale for 10x what it sold for new, talk about a mark up and a half
-
sold*
No one forced the person who bought it to buy it at that price, though.

the fact that anybody spent $400 on it shows a lack of self control on their part. At least for me, $400 can go a whole farther than buying a single novelty cap.

Indeed, but who are we to tell someone how to spend their own money, even if it seems crazy and irresponsible to us?

He's a handsome man with a big heart.
That rules me out.

That does not look like a particularly interesting cap to me, but hey, I'm not in the game.
Mandolin's sculptures and those glass ones by the woman on the West Coast seemed far more cool and desirable.

Wow, guess I know where to go if I ever need some quick cash.
I imagine the Reddit marketplace like that side of town with fiends and clackheads running around offering to give you rimjobs for some artisan caps.

Its a larger community that is on a globally known website, I would expect that it would attract more people willing to spend $$$$ to get what they want.

Never understood throw aways to sell artisans! If you are going to sell something as expensive as this, wouldn't the first thing people want to know is that the seller is reputable and its legit? Making a new account thats only a few days old with 0 link karma + comment karma is sketch.

To put things in perspective, $400 is the equivalent of 3 full months working on a minimum wage here in Brazil. I understand that people are entitled to do whatever the hell they want with their own money, but to be entirely honest with you this can't be right. The only two reasonable explanations that I've got for this are:
a) The buyer is a millionaire or a very wealthy person that considers the keycap as being a piece of art;
b) The buyer doesn't have self control and decided to burn some late year spare money that he had;
Outcome a) is absolutely understandable and I believe we all agree with it. Rich people spend much more money in much simpler stuff than a crafted keycap, it happens all the time. But the outcome b) is the one that worries me a bit, because impulsive buys like this can be considered just as dangerous as betting or gambling. Sooner or later you'll be swamped in debt and will go broke. And I honestly believe that such action is an indicator of obsession and other psychological disorders. If somehow the buyer eventually gets to read this, I recommend you to seek for adequate help my friend.

Aren't you the kid who refuses to put out a R2 of a GB set forcing people who want that set, to pay similar prices for the set you 'designed' ?

You don't have to be anywhere near a millionaire to be able to spend $400 on something like that.
But you have to be a wealthy person, like I said. In my country, you have to be an extremely wealthy person or a millionaire if you're spending R$2000 on art like this. Otherwise you're trading let's say, a month's worth of dinner for a plastic token. And in this case, you're already falling into the outcome b).

...doesn't that set go for similar amounts on ebay (it was Pulse right?) ?
I mean calling him a kid, designed in quotation marks, impying he's responsible for the ebay price of pulse because he's not producing more ? Something something brocaps on the last point ?

tbh I know people that do not make much but live quite beyond their means, or spend large amounts on stuff they "have to have".
ie a $1500 record player + extras that was used for 1 week before selling at a large loss
you don't have to be rich to spend $400 on a cap. they just need to convince themselves that spending that money is worth it.
-
Let's not forget all the high schoolers spending mommy and daddy's money.

He produces them? oh ok, I thought it was someone else that did that and sourced the plastics, colours, layouts, types of keys etc... my bad then.
I made no mention of BroCaps in that post though, just trying to point out the meaningless post he made about prices, when something he was responsible for went for similar costs because he didn't want to do a second round, or allow anyone else to do a second round without him (at least at the time).

You don't have to be rich, okay, but you have to have a relevant budget for futile "investments". A person that lives beyond their means and buy stuff that they "have to have" is already under the outcome b). If you convince yourself that it's okay to spend $400 on a cap, even if it that's gonna damage your finances than you are already under the outcome b). Either way, I was looking at this situation from the perspective of a 3rd world country person so that's a lot of money where I'm from. Obviously the buyer is not brazilian but if he is, then I'm fairly sure he's extremely wealthy. Or crazy.

And I don't think anyone here is allowed to say that it's dumb to pay $400 for one keycap. Yeah, they overpaid, but quite frankly just spending $20-$50 on one keycap seems ridiculous to a lot of people outside this community.

Can someone remind me again why we care what people spend their own money on? Some collector purchased a cracker from the Titanic a couple months ago for like $23,000 and people regularly pay hundreds and even thousands of dollars for CS:GO skins and League of Legends accounts with rare skins and the last two aren't even physical items. If someone wants to blow $400 or even $500 on a keycap they are certainly free to do so and everyone else is equally free to make fun of them for doing so, but do we really need a new thread every time one of these comes up for sale?
-

Because gh is full of nosey mother****ers. And we pick and choose who gets a pass and who doesn't. When in the end it's really none of our problem who sells what the own. Or who buys what they can pay for. Sadly this will never go away.
-
People here waffle on this all the time. One day we care that caps are being flipped, another day we don't. Just how it is. And it is probably different people doing the caring in each instance.
If someone wants to spend their money on it, that's on them. I wouldn't, but that's on me. It is as simple as that as far as I see it. I'm not here to judge.

Nah, we don't need to blame reddit every time this happens.
It's because people are jealous of those who have that kind of money to throw around on artisan caps. I mean, for real. How you gonna get butthurt over someone selling and someone else buying, no matter what it is, and what price it sells for? Because they don't want market prices to be so high, in case they want to buy something, and don't have that kind of money to spend. That's it. reddit, no reddit, eBay, no eBay, makes no difference.
Just accept and move on, already. You will be much more content with your own life, if you stop worrying about what others are doing all the time.
-

I only care because it's almost like Wall Street in the sense that it feels like a group of people are artificially inflating the market. But here everyone acts like it's ok because its "their money".

It's no conspiracy, brother. It's just people wanting to make a buck off those willing to spend it. Free market is free.

In case your post was aimed at my reply, I'd like to clarify that I never made fun of the buyer nor questioned his rights on spending $400 on a resin keyboard keycap. Counter-Strike players, memorabilia collectors, basically everyone is free to spend money in whatever they want. I think that we all agree that this is unquestionable. People spend money on their hobbies, it can be a lot of money or sometimes just enough money. People have their budgets. I'm also not questioning the ethic behind flipping the keycap nor Bro's policies. Questioning these two is way beyond me.
While I agree that double standards do exist in this forum to different extents, the main topic of my reply was in using what happened as an exemple to bring to the light a discussion in regards of obsession and addiction. Since you mentioned Counter-Strike skins, I believe that you acknowledge that gambling sites are causing huge damage to the young player base. I won't go into specific Counter-Strike details, but gambling and obsession are being facilitated a lot nowadays due to the easy access to credit cards and direct financial transactions.
Perhaps, this Reaper situation fits perfectly as an example of the addiction/obsession phenomenon.
-
I think a more appropriate comparison would be to art prints. The artist creates a painting, and we all know those original paintings often sell for many thousands of dollars. However, PRINTS of the work are sold for hundreds of dollars. If the original outlet stops selling those PRINTS, the might be considered rare, and sell for several times markup from what the original PRINT sold for.
-
And it is probably different people doing the caring in each instance.
I don't see how this could possibly be the case. reddit is a single entity with a single voice. Just like geekhack is a single entity with a single voice. And they both suck. >:D

If someone wants to blow $400 or even $500 on a keycap they are certainly free to do so and everyone else is equally free to make fun of them for doing so, but do we really need a new thread every time one of these comes up for sale?
Nah, it wasn't aimed at anyone in particular and not even at GH in particular because this same discussion goes on in pretty every /r/MechMarket post where an artisan is being sold at what people deem too high of a price. I just don't get why people care what other people are spending money on, or for that matter, what price people are selling their own personal property for.
You make a good point about the addiction and obsession culture that is becoming more and more prevalent today though. I think that the fantasy sporting websites like Draft Kings and FanDuel are also contributing to the problem, and they are reaching a different demographic that wouldn't normally be spending money for online entertainment.
