Title: Sun Type 5c (Fujitsu dome with slider)
Post by: chyros on Sat, 26 December 2015, 18:08:56
I recorded this before I went on holiday and took it with me for after Christmas. I've had this keyboard for ages but never came around to reviewing it - fortunately now's a perfect time :) . A very nice-looking, elegant keyboard for sure, with slightly above-average rubber domes. Hope you enjoy the video! :)

That voice :blank:

"somewhat more posh version", "charming dark blue" - love it ;D

Elegant keyboard - agree.

I also have a Sun 5 something keyboard that I actually ran my fingers across earlier today while distracting myself as my other half was vigorously encouraging me to help clean out the shed.  I'd have to have a proper look to see what model it it, but it's very similar to this one.

I've always liked the look of this keyboard, but the feel is like unto a rubber dome, so I've never really felt that I would like to type on it for an extended period.

Thanks mate ;) .

Yeah, the typing feel is unfortunately where the keyboard least delivers. Not that it's horrible or anything, but for people accustomed to using a mechanical keyboard it's sub-par for sure.

I once got one only because it looks so good and is so well-made.
If you would build a converter yourself there are links to two different blueprints and firmwares on the Deskthority Wiki.

BTW. At work, I use a Sun Type 7. That one has almost the same layout but different domes that are not so mushy when you bottom out.

Another brilliant review, Chyros. Always appreciate the research you do for these.

It's a pity, that Sun is really quite a looker. I particularly like the square sharp-edged keys; they give it a nice 'modern' aesthetic despite the board itself being ~20-ish years old. Probably wouldn't be very enjoyable to type on, but it's definitely one of the better looking keyboards I've seen in a while.

It's sad how you can almost chart the decay of the keyboard manufacturing industry as cheaply made garbage became the norm for PC components starting in the late 90s, and now today well made and well-designed keyboards (irrespective of their switch type) have become a complete niche product.

Thanks mate :) .

Yeah, it's sad to see the industry in such decline. I mean I understand why; cheaper and more silent make a lot of sense nowadays. Still, the feel and durability of a proper mech is surely worth it.

Heheheh normalyy I don't, really. I just use my pinky or whatever finger turns out to be convenient. I do use the index finger for the spacebar fairly often though, something a lot of people have commented on xD (I can't really type very well).

Oh sorry i meant the spacebar!

Nice review btw, very informative and well shot. I was about to buy one of these boards for $5 but wasn't sure what switches it came with.

Thanks :) .

Don't get this keyboard for the switches. Still a cool board, though.
