Surprisingly, I'm not a fan of 55g Topre. I also have a strong dislike for MX Clears.

Whyy do you hate blue alps  someone here praise blue alps like crazy. I hate switch that doesn't feel smooth :))
-
I haven't really found a switch I hated. I know Topre is da best though.
-
"Hate" is a strong word.
I do not hate any switches or keyboards.
I like MX reds the least, out of all switches I have in keyboards.

All stock MX and Gateron switches save for one. I think Gateron Reds are the only stock switch I would be OK with. Everything else either needs lube, different springs, or in some cases even stickers (even if they only have minimal impact).
-
Realized that I hate MX Blues... after getting a board with them *cry*
I ended up going back to my MX Browns board because I like the low tactility and lower force required since its easier to press, which is probably the opposite or what many people like. Still waiting on that 87U in the mail for my first taste of the topre punch ^-^
-
I've only felt MX switches, nearly all of them aside from white, but i haven't felt grey's or reds on a full keyboard.
From my limited experience with switches i really dislike black, red, and brown. I just dont like linear switches, and brown is too close to a linear for me.
My favorites are, in order : Green, Clear, Blue and tactile grey.

topre
Used to hate mx reds, but I think I didn't give them a chance. Topre isn't for everyone
legit I like the feel of cheap rubber dome over topre. I love the HHKB layout but refuse to type on those switches.

I hate non-silenced topre
I love silenced topre, the kind with the reduced travel

Hate Gons. And MX Reds. and MX Browns.

Now, for GoNs.
They feel fine, but look cheap. The lighting is dumb and makes them look bland. They are overpriced, and the wait time for a new one is unsavory. if you MUST go that route, Winkeyless is far superior in almost every way, especially customer service. From experience. I personally am not a huge fan of either though.

Agreed, like the discussion we had yesterday, if it ain't aluminum then it ain't worth it. :p

Yup. I am NOT paying that much for a little piece of acrylic with some SMD's.
-
I cant handle MX Reds or MX Blacks ones too hard the others too soft, gateron blacks are my goldilock switch thats just rightt as far as linears go, I also dislike MX blues quite a bit and after trying stock MX clears I was not impressed.

I want to redact my previous post. Hate MX Browns. Really like Gateron Browns.
-
Board with acrylic case
-
Switches: Topre in anything below 55g, Browns (of any variation)
Boards: My variable 10th AE silenced Realforce...I really need to get to swapping 55g into it =(
-
MX browns MX browns cant stand them.
Love blue Alps

More than agree.I love his soldering and lubing skill, but the acrylic case and the waiting time, price is so much.

Switches: Blues
Keyboards: Acrylic anything
-
Cherry MX reds are for baby fingers, blacks are better.
-
Massdrop shipped me a 35g Noppoo Topre clone (instead of 45g) and that was awful. You could sneeze and that thing would type "hjdpensien".
Cherry MX Whites are just mushy and randomly click/don't click. Very annoying to use.
-
Reds are ****, blues sound like turds dropping into the toilet, every cherry switch sucks besides clears they're aight but for some reason every cherry switch feels like some fragile thing about to break. only reason I use cherry is for customization/aesthetics.
topre is top quality shizz anything else is garbo
-
I have a dislike for variable weight realforce keyboard in particular, and cherry mx clears.
-
I don't really hate any mechanical switches but I despise those cheap, worn-out membrane boards littered around places. I hate when I have to use them. >:D
-
My brother had this one membrane keyboard that he got with his computer which just was the worst membrane keys of any keyboard I have ever touched, the keys would stick and then they would suddenly drop and the keycaps were horrid aswell, completely flat making it hard to know where your fingers were on the keyboard without looking down, and seeing how it was the biggest keyboard I have seen aswell with a million macro keys for no reason made it even harder. it would also have a slight electrical buzz if you decided to have the backlight on... just the absolute worst. I cant remember the name, I must have tried to bury it away in my memories.
*Edit* I also have only tried Greens (which were on my first mechanical keyboard) and then browns, going back to greens a couple of days ago I feel that browns are bad. dont hate them though, what I do hate are laptop keyboards, I cant recall having used a laptop with a good keyboard in it.
-
old simplified black alps. THE WORST.
-
I hate the new Apple MBA keyboards.
I strongly dislike HHKB. I tried it a few times, started to like it, then really liked it, but then got over the novelty and now it's just an overhyped rubber dome with better than average build quality.
I do hate those stupid floppy rubber keyboards. But thankfully I almost never encounter them.
Edit: hopefully less offensive now
-
not so much a keyboard, but the (lack of) stabilizers on so many keyboards.
no stabilizers, badly-working stabilizers, crappy-feeling stabilizers.....
i have a few very nice keyboards, but barely use them because i get tired so quickly of the nasty stabilized keys.
and whoever thought it was a good idea to put a huge shift key on a keyboard, and then don't stabilize it!? pfff :( despite its size, it still only functions if pressed exactly in the middle. should've just gone with the Model F XT approach!
I strongly dislike HHKB. I tried it a few times, started to like it, then really liked it, but then got over the novelty and now it's just an overhyped rubber dome with better than average build quality. No better than my old Microsoft rubber dome. So many people have drunk the cool aid though.
it's silly to assume that everyone who likes the HHKB only likes it because of the hype.
i can understand why you'd dislike the hype around it, however.
that said, there's really nothing wrong with (liking) rubber dome.
any "keyboard newb"-guest that i've had over, who would type on a bunch of my keyboards out of interest, every single one of them liked Topre over anything else i have, including cherries, complicated alps, F-BS and M-BS. (are they all HHKB hype cool aid people now, too?)
so...
is it too expensive? maybe
is it hyped? definitely
but is it possible for people to legitimately like the HHKB? well, absolutely!
don't become a 'HHKB hater' man, it's silly.
-
I only really HATE rubber dome keyboards, and even some of them I think are really good. I don't really hate any switches, even though I do dislike a fair few, and I do hate how unfairly popular and overhyped some of them are. There are a lot of modern mechanical keyboard reviews out there by annoying technophiles who just blab on and say exactly what their sponsor wants them to and it's all uninformed BULL**** D: .

don't become a 'HHKB hater' man, it's silly.
I intentionally used "dislike" because I am not a hater of the HHKB. However when I hear/see people say "I gotta get a HHKB" even though they've never used one does make me skeptical that they have any legit reasons other than hype. I said "so many" instead of "every". Yes there are legit reasons for liking it, and there are several members that I deeply respect who have far more knowledge than I do who love the HHKB. They aren't the ones who I'm talking about.
Anyway I'm sorry if I offended you. I did not mean you personally when I made the cool aid comment. Maybe I should have just left that out. If people like it then great! If you like it then great! My main point is that I strongly dislike the HHKB because it fails, in my opinion, to live up to the substantial hype it has. I dislike the keyboard, not the ones who use it!
-

Just be glad Demik is muted.

I can sort of type on anything, as long as it doesn't stick/grind too much (like some worn-out domes, dirty Alps SKCM Black, various mostly no-name clone switches or obscure "stabilization" mechanisms, that don't really work at all) and does register keystrokes properly.
However, I have a strong dislike for various aspects of keyboards, such as
- sticky worn (esp. ABS) keycaps, when my fingers get sweaty a bit;
- overly bright indicator diodes and as well most backlight implementations (the blue LEDs combined with shine-though windows in some keycaps on Noppoo Choc Mini were a terrible idea, I'm sure there are similar cases, but I avoid them, I even took the effort to desolder surface-mount LEDs from my USB hubs);
- most clicky key mechanisms (modern plate-mounted Cherry MX Blue/Green sounds cheap and annoying, buckling springs and complicated Alps SKCM White are way too loud for me, and some late Alps clones are even worse);
- gritty switches (modern Cherry MX are borderline, modern Cherry MX Brown, stock MY and any Kailh switches feel much worse, so do poorly stored Alps, not to mention all sorts of vintage Asian atrocities);
- key mechanisms with a stiff peak at the top of the keystroke, followed by harsh bottoming out (esp. Apple Aluminium scissor switches, stiff Alps/clone switches ranging from complicated Alps SKCM White to APC Clicker semi-mechanical switches,… or, ahem, HHKB from my past experience);
- full-size keyboards, when I have limited space (i.e., almost always) and/or want/need to use a right-handed pointing device;
- the standard asymmetrically staggered layout with no hand separation, non-remapped Caps Lock and AltGr too far to the right;
- space-saving "optimizations" of the standard layout, such as an arrow cluster embedded in the bottom-right corner at the cost of moving "slash" and Shift keys;
- nearly all default embedded "function" layers in compact keyboards (HHKB Fn layer is a prime example of this).
-
I strongly dislike HHKB. I tried it a few times, started to like it, then really liked it, but then got over the novelty and now it's just an overhyped rubber dome with better than average build quality. No better than my old Microsoft rubber dome. So many people have drunk the cool aid though.
Sacrilege!
But I respect your opinion. :-X
-
Just be glad Demik is muted.
Lol he loves his HHKB but he did own at least one very nice non-Topre board that I know of, maybe more.
-
Out of the ones I used (brown, red, black, blue) - black.
My fingers hurt after long hours on the PC back then.
-
Funny enough I hate ergo clear,
Bought a fully assembled ergo clear on my early keyboard days, sold it within days after receiving it

Don't think I would have expected you to say that. What did you not like about them?
-
I can't stand to type on MX Blues. It just doesn't seem right to me. Also, I hate typing on boards that don't have a plate. Feels mushy.

Idk man :(
It's like... mushy... thock but no thock, actuation point is strange
Like everything at once but half it all
But I blame my fingers, these fingers can only go with clicky stuff and lubed vintage blacks only....
*currently typing on Filco Fukka alps and loving it :-* *

For switches, I don't like really anything linear. I have tried Cherry Reds and Blacks and didn't care much for them, but I haven't tried any Gateron switches so I can't say anything for them.
For keyboards, I just don't like flimsy feeling keyboards. As long as the build quality is high and and the keyboard is sturdy, I don't have much preference for the materials used.

I wonder if he ever found his 356 Mini. Probably did and trashed it.

Mx clears I guess. Not a massive fan of the Reds but they're better then the fatigue inducing clears.
Mx Browns, I choose you.

MX Blues - sound like they're broken

you didn't offend me at all!
the 'cool aid' comment just made your post look like it was a 'hhkb-hater post' (to me, at least).
so i figured i'd take my turn to defend the concept of preferences. but of course i know that the HHKB is hyped, and i also know that plenty of people will buy, and even defend it because of hype - but not me! besides, i am not that crazy about the HHKB.
anyway, sorry if i came off offended.
i see your point and i agree about the entire hype thing. it's a real shame.
and i can also understand that you feel it didn't live up to its hype, because it doesn't. in the end, it's just another keyboard! ;D
thanks for the reply!
cheers

not all linears feel the same (at all)!
for example, i'm not crazy about cherries, but my complicated green alps are a different story. i also have hi-tek linears, which are also way different in sound and feeling!
of course, maybe you just don't like linears at all, but disliking blacks and reds certainly does not mean that you dislike all linears! :p
-
Clears suck. I give them a chance every so often and they just keep sucking.
-
I hate ISO!
This is what I think of - I hate ISO, but after using it for 17 years, I can't shake the muscle memory. I also have to use it class but I took my board in for the first time and it was glorious.
-
Clears suck. I give them a chance every so often and they just keep sucking.
Funny, they're the Cherry switch I like most xD .
I think it's funny how, when there's something like an argument, it's always about Topre and HHKBs. Faithful as IBM supporters are, if there's one board/switch people get religiously attached to, it's Topre and the HHKB :p .
Who knows, one day... xD
-
Keyboards
I hate anything smaller than full ANSI 104 unless it is going to be connected to my iPad. I hate anything that doesn't provide a modern Filco-style layout.
I hate laptop keyboards and anything with flat, chiclet style keycaps.
Switches
I can't stand clicky switches, and I especially hate clicky switches found inside IBM keyboards (or any of IBM's imitators).
I hate any switch that can't take my SA and DSA keycaps without a slider mod. That includes Topre even though I like how they feel.
(I think it goes without saying that I also hate cheap membrane keyboards.)

Surprisingly, I'm not a fan of 55g Topre. I also have a strong dislike for MX Clears.
WHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!?!?!
Also I hate linear switches and heavy switches
And full sized with the numpad on the right
And anything razer

Hate MX Blues >:D
-
Oh yeah and Topre. I couldn't type on it for more than maybe 20 minutes.
-
I hate the stereotypes people throw on switches. Blue is for typing. Black is for gaming. Tactile is for all-around. And so on!
Switches are all preference, some like light clicky, some like to work on their Arnold Schwarzefingers heavy linear boards. The hatred is further exasperated by someone coming in like a know-it-all and sharing how much they hated a switch when it's all opinion, but you can tell that they are convicted by and sold on the messaging provided by the switch marketing claims. Ugh!

This is the biggest problems with the masses of threads by people asking for what the absolute best switch for them. Outside of a select few factors (like hysteresis making the fastest tapping somewhat odd), its basically all preference. And it gets said time and time again in those threads, yet new users keep posting them. Guess that's the price the forum pays for increased popularity.

Yup. I tried like every switch variant, to finally decide that hysteresis is annoying as hell to me (ALPS changed my life). I also found out my combination of 50g + Vintage Black makes for the ultimate MX experience to my fingers. :)

As much as I'm not huge, using truly smooth linears for the first time really is an amazing experience.
Also, nice to see another VA person around. Whereabouts are you?

I'm in Reston. :) Clicking near an open window since the weather is so nice right now. I think if you listen intently, you might hear the Blue ALPS in action...

Never actually tried them, but I'm almost 100% positive MX Greens would be my least favorite stock switch.
I once put Clear springs in blue switches, and holy crap it was the worst typing experience of my life.

I'd advise trying vintage blacks. I'm really not a fan of the scratchyness of new cherry switches, but when smooth they're the best.

Seconded. The difference between Vintage Blacks and brand new MX Blacks is dramatic.
-
Might be considered too obvious but.. I hate Apple "butterfly" switches. Not only because of how they feel but because what they represent and because Apple had appropriated the word butterfly (http://deskthority.net/wiki/Butterfly_keyboard) for their switches.
The newer desktop Apple keyboards are very close in appearance and key travel although not "butterfly" - but they are just as bad.
-
"Hate" is too strong in my case. I usually find something to like about almost any switch and keyboard. However, as much as I have tried to like various Cherry mx switches, they are my least favorite of all. Within the mx family, my least favorite is the mx clear switch. I think it is because it has a steeply rising force required for displacement beyond the actuation point, making this switch fatiguing for people like me who like to bottom out their keystrokes.
-
Not quite switches, but I hate Cherry stabilizers in comparison to Costar, Costar just feels so much better, and doesn't feel like a pressing down on porridge.
-

I dislike MX-Clear (too stiff) MX-Red/Black (need some tactile feedback).
Are Clears really that stiff? I guess I'm used to Blues and Greens so maybe that's why they don't feel stiff to me.

I hate anything that doesn't provide a modern Filco-style layout.
You mean the standard ANSI layout? It's got nothing to do with Filco. :p
My Topre RealForce board is a standard ANSI layout, but it is not Filco-style. Just compare the bottom row to see what I mean. I prefer 1.25u mods and a 6.25u spacebar on the bottom row, a design popularized by Filco.

Hehe, I'm the opposite here--I wish more people used 6U bottom row (1.5-1-1.5-6-1.5-1-1-1.5). It's been impossible to find keycaps for MX though.

If demik was a judge: "Do you solemnly swear that you will use the HHKB, the whole HHKB, and nothing but the HHKB?"
I personally don't have hatred towards many switches, but I haven't tried that many. I just really don't like bad rubber dome keyboards.
-
Just be glad Demik is muted.
Lol he loves his HHKB but he did own at least one very nice non-Topre board that I know of, maybe more.
I wonder if he ever found his 356 Mini. Probably did and trashed it.
I did. And I recently threw it away along with an mx mini because they are terrible ****ing boards with terrible PCBs.

Was? I am. I judge all you heathen cherry users.

I dislike MX-Clear (too stiff) MX-Red/Black (need some tactile feedback).
Are Clears really that stiff? I guess I'm used to Blues and Greens so maybe that's why they don't feel stiff to me.
They are deffinitly a lot stiffer coming from blues for me, but that's why I like them so much. Blues are too light for me, greens are just the right weight f, but they are to loud for the keyboard that i bring to class with me. Im also a lot more accurate on clears, i only get about 80 or so percent accuracy on blues, but in the high 90's on clears
-
I hate mx blacks, reds, and silent cherry switches. They feel like scratchy crap.
I'd advise trying vintage blacks. I'm really not a fan of the scratchyness of new cherry switches, but when smooth they're the best.
Eventually I will, for now, linear green alps I got a few days ago from eBay :p
-
Haven't typed on many switches yet, but so far not a fan of reds. I need that click/bump.
Oh, and the new Apple butterfly switches in the new Macbook keyboard, if those count. God damn, that zero travel sucks ass.
-
I can't stand anything heavier than mx browns :/ And yes, that includes mx blues

You could do landing pads and/or O-rings to quiet the Greens, but Clears are nice too. I have only been using Clears for 1/2 a week and I already like them way better than Browns and a little better than Blues but Greens are still holding out as my favorite...for now.

I only have experience with Cherry switches as of now, and green is currently my favorite. But clears are deffinitly right behind them, browns aren't nearly tactile enough for me. The next board i do will probably have greens in it. But for something i can take with me anywhere, i'm really liking my new board. Ill have to see how quiet i could make greens.

I don't hate buckling springs, but I like complicated white alps more...
I hate Cherry MX Reds and Blues.
-
High typing angle hurt my wrists
This just means the keyboard is wrong for the desk/chair.
You should set the angle based on the height of your desk. If you have a high desk, you should have a steep angle. If you have a low desk or the keyboard is on your lap, you want it to be more nearly flat.

The noisier the better, I would write on a typewriter if I could. If the keys are too quiet my house just doesn't sound right. :)
I don't think I could ever go back to MX Brown's after getting Blues. Anything slightly softer makes me cringe now.

If im in my own house i have to agree :p, well i agree no matter where i am, its just not great for everyone else.

MX Red because I'm a clumsy typist and because reds expose me for the fraud I am :V

Pretty much this. I hate light switches. I type fine on rubber domes but when I get to light switches like browns or reds I get exposed.
Also Browns are cancer on the hands. Pretty much anything lighter than blues I don't like.

Same as Connly33, I just made too many typos on my Ducky with blues. I'm in love with my greens with o-rings now. However it's still a little too noisy for the office. Looking forward to trying the clears in my ordered Whitefox. And if I don't like em as much, I guess I can always desolder the switches and change them...

I use my V2 with Greens at my office and I haven't had any complaints, although my co-workers were acclimated when I had my AT101W at work :)

What switches were in the AT101W? Complicated Blacks? Those aren't quite as loud as greens usually.

Always SKCM Black, the late variation. They sound quite unlike any other Alps switch, including early SKCM Black. I used an AT101W for a long time at work, my colleagues didn't mind. But everyone's much more charmed with the NMB that's there now xD . I might replace it soon with a more, let's say, specialised board, soon, though.

Good to know. I had a pile of those boards at one point, ended up giving them all away. Was never a huge fan of them, the ones i had did not age well.

They were Blacks of some kind, I just know that I bought O-rings when the Green came in with the anticipation of putting them on but when I asked my closest co-workers if they were bothered by the sound they said it didn't sound any louder than the old keyboard. Now we are in a larger office that has proper offices so it's even less of an issue, so I can click-and-clack-away on my Greens to my heart's delight without any complaints!

You want loud, so you picked MX blue? Weak sauce!
You should find a Selectric, a beam spring board with a solenoid clicker, or at least a Model F. :-)

There's only 5 other people in my office right now, so it's usually quite quiet. After getting my WASD v2 with greens, I was banished to another desk, further from my coworkers. Since I put o-rings on them, I'm allowed back :p Actually also like the feel better with o-rings on them.

Oh yeah, I saw a video of a beam spring board with the clicker enabled and it made me laugh out loud, that level of noise alone makes me want one xD . No idea how loud the Selectric is, but I think my Remington would give it a run for its money ;) .

Someone else ripped it out and shoved it into a Model F iirc. What a combo that is xD .

Haha yeah no kidding! Engicoder and i were talking earlier about space invaders, wasnt there a guy that bought hundreds of boards just to make one out of the purple switches?

It may have been that board in General. It was a Filco Manila air.

dat beamspring board doe

awesome awesome board, but i would not use a case-less keyboard myself. it's just too naked for a shy person like me
definitely (still) want to try a beam spring board, and a hall effect one. doubt i'll ever type on one, however :(

Pretty sure that was just because the person making the video was working on it at the time. These beam spring boards in general have nice (ridiculously huge) cases.
-
I'm not a fan of linear switches, clicky switches as well, but they don't usually annoy me unless I have a hangover.

ah, fair enough :)
i've seen some keyboards removed out of a 'one-piece' (keyboard+computer in one case), so i figured..

I don't hate any modern mechanical switch, they all have their charm. The only ones I hate are old Apple Macintosh keyboards (M0110 and M0110A) which feel (and sound) like scratching a chalkboard, hhhhhhorrible.

You just tried one in bad condition, full of dust/grit.
When brand new, tee mount Alps switches are butter smooth, better than the best MX black switch ever made.

Got my Cherry profile set yesterday - anything but Cherry now.

I'm not a fan of MX Blacks personally. Never really got used to them in my 7G.
