Title: IBM Model M 1391401 Spacebar Rattle
Post by: spanyam on Fri, 08 January 2016, 14:46:31
I recently purchased a bolt-modded Model M that's clean and fully functional. The only minor gripe I have with it is that the space has a slight rattle to it (no wobble, just a minor rattle).

Video here:

The rattle persists even when fully pressed. Any way to reduce or remedy that?

You're sure the stabilizer wire is seated correctly under the tabs?

That kind of thing is pretty typical. You can gently bend a slight bow into the wire, but I suggest you just live with it for a while. Also, I use a fairly thick grease in the mouth of the retaining tab, but that will not change the action too much.

Yes definitely seated correctly. The stabilizer bar just slips in to the small slots under the ',' and 'c' keys rather than snapping in, but I'm not sure if the Model M's are designed that way.

Okay, that's fine. It's certainly livable with.
