Cuz.. a muffin is like  a harder, denser, therefore lazier version of the cupcake.. 


That's probably how they came to be,  lazy bakers trying to minimize production time.

Disappointed as well, muffins have better variety imo. Who doesn't like a good blueberry muffin? With cupcakes you're just stuck with an overload of sweetness.
