Title: 2015 Keyset of the Year (Winner announced!)
Post by: swimmingbird on Fri, 15 January 2016, 00:53:37

Hyperfuse GMK is the 2015 Keyset of the Year! Congratulations to Bunnylake, codyeatworld and the whole Ctrl Alt team for winning the 2015 Keyset of the Year award!

[attachimg=1]

Hi All,

Meant to post this a while back but have been totally swamped with work and now getting my new apartment sorted. I asked HoffmanMyster what he thought about running a little competition at the end of 2015 to see what the most popular keysets were and he liked the sound of the idea.

I was hoping that everyone could add to this list of nominations for a keyset of the year. It doesn't have to be an original colour way or the first round, but it should be something that was for the most part RECEIVED in 2015. This means that things that didn't get into most people's hands in 2015 like Miami Nights, PBT4 or Electric Bluegaloo should be saved till next year.

There will be no prizes - just bragging rights for the respective designer or GB runner - hell maybe someone could craft up a little badge or something?
On Sunday I'll post a voting thread and we'll close the poll and announce the results after one week

I'd love to see you all come up with some other awards as well - e.g. best vendor, best overall GB - be creative!

VOTING IS NOW LIVE - SELECT UP TO THREE OF YOUR 2015 FAVOURITES

Sales? has to be Granite.

If awards were based solely on sales/attendance/whatever, that would be incredibly boring...  Let's nominate and vote for the *best* sets, not the most universally purchased.

I'm not sure whether to do this as a google form or a Geekhack poll

Thinking GH poll so I won't have to do any data validation

It would be great if there could be links added for the different sets. Some of these I've never heard of and would like to read up on them.

Good idea - I'll update it to have links

If it were sales based it would be pretty boring - it would most likely be Triumph Adler or Granite

I think that polls like this work better when you let people select multiple options (3 or 4?) - but I'll leave it to your discretion.  Let me know what you'd like as far as that is concerned and I'll get the poll up.

IMO you have to factor in the profile too. Hyperfuse DCS vs DSA vs GMK would all rank slightly different for me (color differences aside). But if you haven't tried a profile at all, then yeah, not sure what to do.  :P

This is kinda what I was thinking. I mean are we subjectively voting for the most aesthetically appealing set? Or the "best" set (whatever that definition may be). In my opinion "best" set could have a lot of factors come in to play. Profile, recognition (I doubt the least known/used set listed is going to win), heck maybe even history of how the set came to be plays a small part of it.

But yeah for me who hasn't tried many and who isn't familiar with the context behind most of these sets, ima pick the pretty one.  :p

in before hack'd

i think 1976 was a super well designed keyset, great child kits and great colours. Wasn't a fan of the jukebox color scheme, but i would like to add it to my collection, very well designed.

Obligatory hack'd and carbon love, orange is beautiful.

JTK, doesn't get my vote because of the missing ISO kits, however, i love it when i see great quality keycaps become more affordable.

Hyperfuse is cool because of the funky colours, in a GMK set. I love to see that.

Thanks to the community for designing and sourcing great keysets :D

EDIT: I need to give credit to Matt3o for the SA retro set. I was able to get a full ISO Nordic sculpted SA set, that isn't easy.

Tend to agree. LOVE the original colors and legends on the SP sets but it didn't translate well imo. It is a fantastic design, but just not a great GMK set.

Yeah, I didn't even vote for the set I nominated. It's a hard choice.

Some analysis for you peeps :) :

Cherry and SA were the most popular profiles run this year with 7 group buys run in each profile. DSA was less popular with 3 group buys and DCS was barely used with only Miami Twice being run in the profile.

SA sets had higher average votes (avg = 17) than Cherry profile in which the average number of votes was 13.29. DSA had the lowest average votes at 3.67 whereas DCS had average votes of 5 (Miami Twice only).

Quartz was the least popular DSA set with no votes. Granite, entering its third round (and now fourth as this is being typed) managed to pull in 10 votes - lower than the average number of votes of either SA or Cherry profile reflecting the severely diminished popularity of the once flourishing profile

Jukebox was the highest voted SA set and overall runner up in the 2015 results with 28 votes. Jukebox was the first SA set to be run through Massdrop - an occurrence that almost became monthly toward the end of 2015 (with Dangerzone and Troubled Minds) and is set to see a Round 2 in coming months - be sure to follow livingspeedbump at Keychatter (http://www.keychatter.com) to stay updated.

Carbon SA, another Massdrop run SA set, was a close second in the SA category with 26 votes. 1976 SA, a PMK run set, came a slightly distant third with 17 votes. 8bit's Round 5 and Matt3o's Retro SA performed similarly with a decent number of votes between them.

Now on to the eternal favourite of many (myself included).... Cherry profile  :D

Hyperfuse GMK, dominated the votes amongst Cherry profile keysets with more than double the votes of any other Cherry profile set (35 votes). Some in this thread have voiced disappointment at the colour differences between the GMK version and the Signature Plastics-made originals but fanfare on the whole has been glowing.

Somewhat surprisingly, the Feng run GMK Cyan GB was the second most popular Cherry set at 17 votes (fourth position overall). It seems that UN6037 might just be done with after this year :p

GMK Triumph Adler came third with 12 votes - an ambitious set that was notable in that it was the first GMK set to utilise custom colours, was greeted with disappointment stemming from a variety of issues that seemed to plague the sets such as insecure shipping trays, scratched keycaps, colour swirling issues and backlight bleed.
Intelli78 has stated his intention to run the set again to address some colour issues in the alpha bases.

JTK Debut, an exciting project that started with many teasers from Ctrl Alt received 8 votes, coming 8th out of 18 contenders. Apart from slight legend issues, reception has been warm - especially toward the prices.

Gateron's Cyrillic Teal, while coming only at the very end of the year sporadically through Tao Bao and its many proxies has been very well received. While only having 8 votes, for the number of people that own this set that is an incredibly high ratio. I predict shadovvved's current GB (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=78563) might top the list of 2016 keyset of the year polls

GMK Olivetti and Red Alert, despite being true and tested favourites were the bottom performers in the Cherry category - most likely owing to the high cost that prevented many from joining.

109 members participated in the 2015 Keyset of the Year awards and cast 228 votes for an average of 2.09 votes per member.

Finally, I'd like to extend a thank you out to everyone who voted and more importantly to the GB runners who have dedicated countless hours to making these fantastic sets happen.

Geekhack is a fantastic place and I love the creative and collaborative environment it provides. Let's all try our best to support the GB runners of 2016! :)

Yeah, it would be on the 2016 keyset of the year list, but the year has just started, sooooo....

Thanks for this! And congratulations to Hypefuse.

The interest in DSA may be worn off at GH, but not at other places, based on the recent drop of the Granite set that reached over a thousand full sets it may be the best selling set of recent years.

1100 base sets sold

Remember that TA did over a thousand as well

Nice write up :D

I own GMK TA and JTK Debut, decent sets but they have their problems (scratches/swirling & legends).

I'll settle for second. That is surprising enough as it is

Regardless of the GMK issues, the design is still one of my favorites of all time. Prefer the SP colors still, but doesn't change the fact that it is a phenomenal looking set on GMK as well. I'd probably want GMK colors and not SP colors had the GMK run first, you just get used to something after a while, ya know?

Also, very cool write up! Learned a good bit about more than a few sets.

Semantics, but I wouldn't call them "issues".  We knew the colors wouldn't be an exact match and we got exactly what we expected.   :thumb:

Yeah thats a better word for it. Like i said, the design and colors are one of my favorites ever. You just get used to something one way for so long that changes can be a little off putting at first, not because it is bad, just because its not what you were expecting. Still a very worthy winner though, I'd have been very surprised if that didn't win.

Was it Hyperfuse or another GMK set that had the issues with the packaging and sets arriving damaged?

Either way, congrats to Hyperfuse and the Ctrl Alt team on their win  :thumb:

I'm not a huge fan either.  I mean, if someone gave me a set I wouldn't turn it down but I wouldn't buy one, especially for inflated aftermarket prices.
