You mean a standard housing power outlet can supply enough electricity to heat and melt metal?
It looks like a Hexacon 500 watt soldering iron, i think they are mainly used for as mentioned sheet metal and copper fixtures, stuff like old style gutters.
My guess is that this would be amasochist's buttplugsoldering iron for sheet metal. I guess it's handy when doing soldering work on roofs
