Title: Is KMAC compatible with B87X2?
Post by: cooldiscretion on Mon, 18 January 2016, 17:17:07
If I ever get a KMAC I thought it would be a great option to get backlighting by using the B87X2 PCB. I've heard they might be compatible. Anyone know or tried it before?

If you get a KMAC? Do you have a sale lined up or are you just hoping to get one, they don't appear on classifieds that frequent. Including the one put up today, I've seen two go for sale in the past couple months.

And no the B87X2 would not work, the USB is on the wrong side. I believe GONs PCB should work though.

They won't fit as what steezus said the USB position is different. Even if it's on the right side they wouldn't fit as the dimensions is different. You would have to get the special gonna nerd pcb for kmac

The Nerd PCB will work but you need to do a little modding to it, GON luckily provided a video to do so.

yeah plate modding is needed since the spacebar stab position is reversed in the nerd TKL.

OP if you need a replacement PCB get this nerd

Totally forgot that he sold the a PCB specifically for the KMAC, glad to know there is no modding needed. Unless he wanted to save a few bucks and go with the Nerd PCB, the plate mod seems really easy.

P.S. If you ever need to sell that KMAC, I'm your guy. :p

i don't think the nerd pcb would even work since the usb position is different from kmac's dimensions

Haha yeah, made be a little tough getting it to fit in. Ironically though, I'm pretty sure I have a KMAC 1.2 lined up to buy, once I get it I'll be sure to find out whether or not it could work.

Nothing lined up really. I was hoping to get the one in the classifieds today which actually posted after I created this post, but someone else got in before me.

Black KMAC is a dream keyboard of mine. Or, at least one with that same look. The TGR Jane has the same look but that GB was super quick with only 20 units or something.
I was just curious to see what the options were since I'm guessing if I do find one the person wouldn't have built it the way I wanted and I would have to desolder the switches
which I can do without a problem, but to have switch backlighting would be cool too.

I was looking into a different one, and then I got out bid by over $200 for some reason. Why anybody would pay $700+ for a KMAC just blows my mind.

Oh, wow, that does look amazing. How would I go about getting a frosted poly plate?
And, what switches did you use that worked with the surface mount LEDs? I know Gaterons don't have the notch in the bottom for them, but I'm wondering if they would work anyway.

Quick answer, I'm at work right now.

SMD doesn't go in switch, it goes on the PCB. So it doesn't matter what switches you use. The frosted polycarb plate diffuses the light to give it that even glow.

I'm not sure, classifieds or speak to GON?

Thanks, yeah, I was thinking maybe the switch itself wouldn't rest flat against the PCB if their was a surface mount LED below it.

But, apparently, that's not an issue so that's cool.

Yeah, the SMD LEDs are pretty far away from the switch. They don't come close to the switch housing.

I really recommend Gons plate and PCB, simply beautiful. I also enjoy typing on the polycarb more than the alu. Nice thock, and a soft but solid feel. :)

just looked at the price, at 60 USD for the pcb and plate is more expensive when i got it, but still seams reasonable.

found it on there, really tempted to make another config.

65g Zealios with a poly plate is amazing to type on, that's what I use in my Orion v2. My KMAC 2 coming in has Vintage Blacks so I think I may grab a GON plate and PCB as well.

http://www.gonskeyboardworks.com/parts-for-kbd/115-nerd-tkl-for-kmac.html

all work out of the box with no modding needed.

he had a group buy for those at one point so im pretty sure these are left overs. but yea there you go.

steez, thanks man but at this point im soo far in the hole with it that even if the thought crossed my mind, my conscious wouldnt allow me to sell it.

zenna im using a powercoaded matte black plate with the pcb.

Thank you very much for the info! I was only semi serious about wanting to buy your KMAC. :p

I actually ended up buying a KMAC 2 and I believe I may be getting a 1.2 as well. *fingers crossed*

I really like the feel of a poly plate for tactile switches so I may just need to pic up another plate, pcb, and switches to swap out. My KMAC 2 currently has vintage blacks in it with original pcb and plate.

lol if the opportunity is there, i would be semi serious too! more serious then semi though. :P s'all good! but i wanted to say you are pretty much me last year-ish. got bunch of korean keyboards back to back. sad thing is i dont even use the kmac... its sitting in the closet.

the LZ-CP is my main board. LOVE that kbd to death. its literally best board i own. so much so that i was contemplating trading my LSv1 for a 60% because between the kmac and lz i know i wont use any other keyboard. That LSv1 is doing no one any favors by collecting dust in the closet... under the kmac... in the box. packed up.

i just hope you are in a better spot with all your new gear!

Yeah I'm afraid I've caught a bug and can't stop buying full aluminum customs. :p

I've been dying to get my hands on a LZ CP, the board looks phenomenal! I try my best to keep my boards in as much rotation as possible. I currently only have my TGR-Jane and Orion built at the moment so I've been swapping those every week. I'm in the search for vintage blues for my LSv2 and then I can start typing on that. I'm also waiting for my TGR-Jane CE to ship and my KMAC 2 to come in the mail. I think the problem is that I keep buying boards because I'm sick of waiting for the other ones to come in lol. Once they all arrive I most likely won't know what to do with them all. :p

unfortunate but true. i got the LS for that very reason. while waiting for the lz. i couldnt ditch the numpad.

but patience is a virtue after all, and good things come to those who wait. or at least thats what i keep telling myself, i have otd's red alert set which should come in tomorrow. hopefully i wont buy any more sets till then!

I still have a few boards that I'd love to get my hands on for the sake of variety. I'm mainly looking for a LZ CP, KMAC Mini, and KMAC Pad for the time being. All rather really hard to get so hopefully I'll get a chance eventually.

Very nice set! I have the OTD Red Alert set as well, I usually have it on my Orion but am thinking of putting it on my KMAC now.

i need me a kpad. but its too expensive for what it is. never really fancied a kmac mini. always found it kind of weird to use. also it reminds me alot of the old g15 keyboard from logitech. minus the numpad, ****ty build quality and the bells and whistles.

speaking of the LZ CP though i need to update my build log with that... whenever i find my photos from the build.

im sure you will someone is bound to want to get rid of thiers eventually. more about timing then rarity, i think.

Yeah kpads have been rather expensive lately, still nice to have to combo. I'm not too big into 60% boards so that's why I think I'll like the KMAC Mini because it comes with just a more buttons that I could really use.

I'll definitely have to look around for a LZ CP, just been having too many good opportunities for boards lately. I have a chance to get a TX1800(not from group buy) so depending on which one is available first then I'll jump on one of them.

the reason i settled with a LZ-CP rather then a tx1800 was mainly the size. on my desk it takes no more room then my kmac. i had a look at the dimensions of the tx1800 and it was big enough to not fit under my cintiq. so it wasnt much of a choice for me. would definatly be an interesting board to use.

im ok with the tkl and 60% layouts given the keycaps have illustrated layouts. sadly the only place to get them are from signature plastics, and they are really expensive. and you have to print legends after wards. too much work. my to do list is soo full it makes me uncomfortable how far behind i am. do update your build once you get all them boards in!

Yeah I agree, I think the LZ CP looks better too especially with the acrylic insert.

I'll definitely make sure to post plenty of pics! I love making build logs, however my KMAC is coming fully built but I'll still post pics anyways. I like to have a thread for my boards so I can update them with new pics, ideas, etc.

Yeah I think down the road I'll buy a poly plate and gon pcb and toss some zealios or something in there. I've never tried linears so I'm really curious to see how these vintage blacks will feel. I also just bought NiB 1988 Vintage Blacks to spring swap and lube for my Jane CE. I may sticker them as well but I kind of see it as being utterly pointless.

i got the kmac gon.  no modding needed.  not sure if he still sells the pcb and plate.

i don't think the nerd pcb would even work since the usb position is different from kmac's dimensions

try comparing

radish, which plate you're using? kmac plate?

the gon plate,  fits perfectly.

aah that explains why it fits perfectly.
