Hey there!
I'm a bit of a geek when it comes to materials, and I thought it would be nice with a database here on GH, for people trying to make their own custom KB.
I was thinking about making a list og metallurgical terms and give it a go on describing their meaning. Also creating a database with general characteristics og a given material.
I think of it as a database where everyone can chime in with input and alike.
What's your thoughts on this?

I think this could be some great info. Could be linked to from simple Q&A, skills plate building tool, the one sticky in MST, probably a couple other places as well.

This sounds like a great idea, I have a fair bit of experience with manipulating/cutting metals etc... and their various grades of uses so I'd be happy to contribute although I'd love to know a bit more about their specific scientific type of properties etc... How they are made and that (as I have mostly worked with them out in the field)

I'll do my best to keep it simple and easily understandable, by providing context and explaining the purpose of a given process.There's a lot of knowledge to be processed so keeping it simple and understandable is very important for me as well.

Practical experience is very important as well, especially when it comes to machining and cutting. I can provide a lot of theoretical knowledge, as I have access to various databases and own several books on the subject. I'm really looking forward to getting started this.
I'll be working on this in the weekend, after my exam on Friday.
I think the first update will consist mostly of introducing people new to the subject to some of the basic terms of metallurgy, but we'll see about that.
I'm also very appreciative of the support :)

During uni I had free access to a really great website: http://www.materialconnexion.com/ (http://www.materialconnexion.com/) which went into detail about a lot of cool materials, always had newly discovered materials popping up all the time too!
Too bad it's a paid thing now :( Although, I think I may still have 90 more days of access :O

Materials science is one of the most interesting things. I would love to see this. People have posted all kinds of anecdotes about how certain metals cause more "ping", or are more unforgiving, or how you should have your backplate thicker than _____ but not too thick. If we could figure that kind of stuff out more rigorously, and in one place, that'd be awesome.
