I have a HHKB 45 g and recently tried a Realforce 55 g. The Realforce 55 g felt noticeably more tactile and springy. I'd like to mod my HHKB to 55 g domes to get the same sort of feeling - but I have a question:
Is the difference tactility due more to the 55g domes or more due to the plate mount vs case mount. I've been doing some reading that suggests the Leopold FC660C's feel a bit heavier than 45 g due to their plate mount, and I'm trying to isolate if it's the domes or the plate mount that I'm most drawn to.

Definitely the domes. In my experience with Topres, plates actually make the switches feel less stiff, as there's less give and absorption of force. More "push-back" if you will.
I'm not exactly sure what makes the 660C feel heavier (I've owned two of them), but I highly doubt the place is responsible. The HHKB feels heavier than a 45g RealForce, as well.

Thanks daerid!
I am loving the HHKB but can't help wishing there was a bit more stiffness/snappiness in the switch. I'm also thinking of adding silencing rings which will help with the placebo feel as will.
Do you have a 55g topre board? Wondering how it compares to the Leopold.

I've had quite a few 55g boards over the years (it's by far my favorite switch). The 660C feels almost as good, IMO. I just wish they'd make a 68 key version.

If anything, the rings will make it LESS tactile as you'll be reducing travel and pushing into the dome slightly...which is why people try to get that goldilocks place where you're not reducing travel but thick enough to silence them..

Do you think this would be the case with the popular hypersphere ones?

Just don't make a 55g HHKB that thing is really heavy heavier than the realforce one

Yes... the layout... judging by your comment it seems I may even prefer the FC600C to my HHKB... I went with the HHKB for the 60ish layout so I'm seeing how it goes. I do think the 660C and the RF boards are gorgeous.

Too heavy, you say? Does it change the feel of the board at all? I'm not necessarily looking for a heavier switch, just a bit more resistance and tactility.

Yep too heavy nah doesn't change the feel of the board its just too heavy and if you think the stock hhkb is not heavy enough for you then I suggest you go make the 55g hhkb

I haven't used those so I don't know...but I would guess they'd work well given other people are using them.
There is no chance of increasing tactility though...the best you can hope for is equal to...

you might want to look into thick krytox lubes that are sold from time to time. Thick ones may be able to increase tactility a little

I don't think my 55g HHKB feels all that heavy. In fact, the main reason I made it 55g is because I found the stock 45g to feel lighter/softer than my 45g steel plate topre boards, the FC660C in particular. My experience in heaviness is 55g RF > 55g HHKB > 45g FC660C > 45g RF > 45g HHKB. I actually prefer the feel of the steel plate boards since the hard bottom out feels nicer and more tactile to me, but I use the HHKB anyway because of the layout. I imagine all of this depends on your typing style.

Odd... in my experience the 45g case mounted HHKB and plate mounted 660C feel almost as heavy as the 55g plate mounted RF boards I've had, whereas the 45g RF board felt almost lighter than MX Reds.

This was exactly my curiosity in my original post- I don't know if the reason I loved the rf so much sad because of the domes or the plate (or the combination of both..)

From what I've seen...that is actually opposite of what most other people think...
Which is...RF 45g is lighter than the HHKB 45g or 45g 660c....Interesting that some think it is the other way around..
