Title: Can I use a detachable cable AT Connector Model M with PS/2 by swapping cable?
Post by: Carthik on Mon, 01 February 2016, 17:00:36
Can I just plug in an SDL PS/2 cable in an SDL AT Model M to use it via PS/2 (provided the AT Model M has a detachable cable)?

AT is a Model F, and it has a fixed AT cable. But perhaps I misunderstand.

Tried to word that mouthful easily...

I have an IBM Model M with detachable AT cable (1390131). Can it be used with PS/2 by simply swapping the detachable cable to an SDL PS/2 cable?

Yes absolutely. And you might be able to sell the black coiled cable for a premium, they are less common and some people prefer them.

But Orihalcon's SDL-to-USB cables are the best, but they are pricey.

Thanks for clarifying that up for me.

Yeah, I've seen the SDL USB cable on ebay, I don't think I can justify that price for a cable. That said, I think using PS/2 supports more key roll rollover than USB?

Ask a gamer, but I think that Model Ms have very low key rollover inherently.

2KRO regardless of the connector. They're also somewhat heavy, long-throw and tactile for a gaming switch. Much as I love the Model M, my experiences gaming on it are sub-optimal.

Good to know the rollover is the same for all connection types.

Maybe I'm not understanding key rollover correctly. How does one CTRL+ALT+DEL with 2KRO?

2KRO doesn't mean that there are no combinations of over 2 keys at the same time possible. It means 2 keys is the largest amount of keys you're GUARANTEED to be able to press. Generally the wiring is made in such a way that the modifiers don't clash with much else.

Control and Alternate are counted separately, I believe.

SDL to PS/2 cable with something this works for me: http://techkeys.us/collections/accessories/products/usb-to-ps2-serial-multimode-adapter

Or use an AT to PS/2 adaptor, and then a PS/2 to USB convertor.

The original black AT cables are lovely and beautifully made btw. It's worth the £0.50 AT to PS/2 adapter if you ask me ;) .
