Before I went on a journey of porting some random WoW clone for Linux I played Alien Arena. That game was really satisfying for a few rounds here and there.

Xonotic, Minetest, Lierolibre and a bunch of rhythm games

At the moment, Serious Sam 3, Garry's mod, Euro Truck sim 2, and my personal favorites, Doom ( and Doom II ofc ) and UT2k4

Go-to free native game: Wesnoth
I play mostly classic RTS games though; WarCraft 3 works great in Wine, StarCraft: Brood War is alright too, and Age of Empires 2 (non-HD/Steam) is fine for the most part as well. I haven't had time to revisit the C&C series in a long time. Total Annihilation should be mostly native thanks to the Spring project, and there are some original games based on it too. Warzone 2100 is native too, and I've heard some major improvements have been made in the game in the last few years.
I haven't had time for RPGs in a while either. Spiderweb's games should be emulated easily, and Avadon: The Black Fortress is native. Apparently, there's an updated native engine for Baldur's Gate and a-likes. I hear Diablo 2 runs pretty well too, even though it's in Wine again.
Other than that, I play only random games from Humble Bundle. Currently Spirits and Zen Bound 2—both are neat puzzle games for chilling out.

Does UT2k4 play natively or does it need WINE?

I haven't played in a while, but I remember it has a native linux binary.

It can be played either way, but I personally have it run natively.

How is Steam on Linux these days? I used Wine to run Steam a few years ago. I think I played Ragnarok or something like that. With a better GPU it would have been a cool experience. Maybe I played some Wakfu as well.. idk
Funny thing is, once Steam was in a WINE environment, it was able to install additional runtime packages, direct x files and whatever the games might need. I launch Steam and it took care of everything for me. I imagined that every Steam game would install in the same manner.
It was pretty awesome though. I didn't have to research which packages, Direct X version, driver settings or whatever a game might need to operate. I clicked download for Windows and poof. There was game.

I'm not a big gamer but for me, it's very convenient.. like you described "download and poof" and thanks Steam/SteamOS a lot of titles get ported to Linux.

I'm really not in to games as much as I was a few years ago. Burnt.
