Cherry Electrical MX SPOS Credit Card Reader Keyboard

Price is link:
$10.00 BIN + 13.75 shipping (http://cgi.ebay.com/Cherry-Electrical-MX-SPOS-Credit-Card-Reader-Keyboard_W0QQitemZ200412646719QQihZ010QQcategoryZ46710QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

HISTORY
I bought one from the same vendor 23 November 2009 for $9.99 BIN. It's now $10 BIN, with one auction in between for $12 BIN. He probably sold zero at $12. Took exactly 7 days to reach San Francisco (area) California.

KEYS
The keys are all cherry browns (haven't removed spacebar yet). Feels a slight bit more stiff than my 2 year old cherry browns, significantly more noisy than the 2-year olds, lower pitched than the Cherry Blues on my Scorpius M10. Width is 14.25 inches (35.5 cm), almost exactly the width of my scorpius M10 without numberpad.

LAYOUT
I'm not a touch typist. The arrow keys are visually hard to find in the compact space, so I put white keycaps on them and now everything is AOK. The [INS-DEL Home-End PGUP-PGDN] grouping is above the numpad, making DEL harder to find by touch, but exposing PGUP-PGDN beautifully to my hand off the right edge.

There is no right ALT key unless you program one. This is inconvenient, but seems to be curable. See next section.

Spoftware required for Magstripe and programmable keys
Cherry software (free but hard to find) is required to enable the credit card reader (hence the POS in the keyboard model number).

Whatever
There are four green LEDs. Caps, Num, and Scroll toggles as expected, plus a momentary flash on LED 4 when a card stripe is successfully read. Those cylindrical rubber feet are near worthless, They raise the board up, but it's unstable. I plan to open her up tomorrow night.

It was packaged in what appeared to be factory box, but there was no USB-PS/2 adapter. N key rollover web page showed me QWASFD once, so 6 key rollover is tested. IMPORTANT CORRECTION: 2-key rollover.

EDIT
and the keyboard torques much more than my Scorpius M10. Almost forgot that part, but I have a reputation to uphold.

My Pics -  Note that the board came with only black keys. The white ones are mine from another keyboard.

the flaw on the N key is a drop of spit. żI must have been drooling?

Auction Pics - I received the Serial number 000019 shown in the picture. Unless they are all SN 000019.

Not at all bad for $24 USD.

are those 2 shot keys?
why is the tilde key next to the spacebar???
SOLD!

Post by: ricercar on Tue, 01 December 2009, 02:35:43
tilde is by spacebar to allow the enclosure to be less wide by one key.

Don't shoot the messenger: Single shot keys.

The preceding picture shows a difference in color between keys (black) and enclosure (blue!?). Indeed, the case is not the same material as the key caps. but the difference is far less apparent to the naked eye, which sees the case as grey. Also worth mentioning, in real life, the keys have no white spots, and are slightly textured.

The lettering is less dramatic without the camera flash, and it's bumpy, it'll catch my fingernail but will not scrape off on repeated trials with intention to scrape. My eyes are too tired to know if it's raised or recessed lettering, but my guess is recessed.

EDIT:
Adding software screen shots to show the programmable keys

Gotta love a program that will let you mouse click from the keyboard!

Downsides:
In the 3-4 hours I've played with this board, I've noticed that the Z key requires significantly more force and concerted intention to press. If this was a $200 board instead of a $24 board, I'd be disappointed enough to demand replacement. Note however,  this ebay seller says no returns, so I've not seriously thought about trying to take the time to argue with him. Even if I persevered, then I 'd have to spend $13.75 to return a $10 board so he can spend $13.75 to send me another. So I'm keeping this, on my desk as primary board even, despite having a Z in my last name. Perhaps I'm too conflict-averse...

Additionally, I find that I'm inadvertently opening a new browser tab often, and this doesn't happen on other keyboards ever. I strongly suspect my typing, with my ring finger sloppily hitting Left CTRL plus shift when I'm intending to type only shift+t.

On the good side, in 3-4 hours it's already sounding more like my 2 year old Cherry browns.

All in all I'm pleased with this keyboard. I probably won't pull the keyswitches out .... for that I'd buy another...

Bought one. For $24, I couldn't pass it up. I wonder if I can buy a G81-1800 and put the board in its case. I doubt it since there is the extra row of keys and the card reader, but it might be worth a shot.

EDIT: Ricercar, were these NIB?  It looks like it from the auction description, but it was kinda hard to tell.

These Cherry Product codes.........

Maybe because it says MX POS you are supposed to ignore the website specs AND the G86 part.  Just weird.

Good find - the Compaq Brown Cherry 11800 is a LOT more expensive now as a way to try them dem Brown Cherries.

Although it does have better keys... (*ducks*)

I was comparing the pics to my ML4100. It has a very similar layout (tilde key next to the spacebar, etc.). It looks like a good replacement for it on my desk at work. I'll have to probably use it for a few days to see if I could use it as my main 'board. If the layout is too weird for regular use, I'll put it on my docking station. The programmable keys on the top look like they'll make some good volume controls, too.

The article number says G80-62410.

Current models are G86-61410. Maybe that's the difference.

Also, made in the USA.

Jsut bought 2 - Bing.com cashback of $2 bucks, total is
$20+ 14.58 shipping - 2 dollars cashback = 32.58 for 2x cherry brown compact keyboards.

OMFG it's a good deal.  Better buy it before I decide to buy 4 more in a single purchase... shipping dosen't go up much in multiples.

Be wary of the layout, though.  It is very similar to the ML4100, and I have troubles sometimes with the smaller modifier keys and odd positioning of the page navigation.*  I like the size for portability reasons, but the layout is frustrating at times.  That said, I bought one, and I am going to give it an honest shot before relegating to my docking station.

* The ML4100 also has smaller keys, so that might have something to do with my issues.  I am not sure if this keyboard has smaller keys or not, but I doubt it.

Ricercar, were these NIB?  It looks like it from the auction description, but it was kinda hard to tell.

Mine was nearly NIB, with the box obviously cut for this keyboard, and a Cherry label on the end. I say nearly, because with my serial number of 19, I have to guess it was opened by the seller for the photos. It was wrapped in a non-sealed plastic bag, and the cable is still wrapped in cellophane/plastic tape.

didnt even think about that when i bought it, was actually still trying to think of a use for it.

you know, since i am too paranoid to really take my hhkb anywhere (utilizing its size and detachable cable, instead it will just sit on the desk)

and it is cheap, in case it breaks...
and it is programmable, to keep settings for use in other computers... MAN, too bad the alpha keys cant be remapped, SO CLOSE to a portable colemak board... wow.

[strike]Ok guys, I need help here. Since he doesn't ship internationally. Can anyone PLEASE pick up one for me and help me out? I will be able to pay up the costs by Paypal (however just in a few days since my PayPal currently holds no balance).

If wanted I could also trade for another board of some type in exchange? Anyone want one of the 1 Euro G80-1800s? lol.

Seriosly I would greatly appreciate if anyone (preferably someone who is already buying one anyway) would pick one up for me and keep it around for a few days until I get to recharge PayPal some time next week.

Thanks in advance.[/strike]

Was it someone on here who bought them out?  buying in lots of 4 seems like something someone on this board would do...

If so, is anyone willing to let one go for a comparative price ($25 shipped, since if you combined shipping you probably got each unit much cheaper than that)?

I like it so far. Very compact.  I think I like the filco tenkeyless layout better though.

Question for you guys, are you gonna keep the spacebar as cherry grey or switch it with a cherry brown?

Quote from: ripster;138563
While testing the keyboard I noticed the programmable keys above F1 to F12 send unique scancodes (same as my Model M 1397000 IIRC) but the two above Esc and PrtSc must be programmed through the Cherry SW.

The main cluster key spacing is the same but obviously the "larger" keys have all been shrunk a bit.  Grey Cherry under the spacebar.  Easy to pull keys - no little white Filco doohickies.  This Grey Cherry is a breeze compared to the Model F AT spacebar!

If you have a key that feels different from the others (like Ricercar's Z) it's probably a bit of molding crud on the bottom of the key.  Pull the key and a bit of sandpaper will take care of it (one of my F keys had some binding).

Keys are PBT (at least the spacebar is).

That almost doesn't look like they're laser-etched.  My 3000 doesn't look like that.  To me, they look pad-printed as I can see texture on the letter.  The lasered caps on my 3000 are obviously etched.

Post by: itlnstln on Fri, 04 December 2009, 10:05:00
Your macro pic does not look like my 3000. On the 3000, there is a noticable, smooth groove where the letter was etched and you can tell (fairly easily) that it was filled with white paint/plastic. It certainly doesn't look like that. The article number for the keyboard doesn't indicate laser-etching, either (the one part of the model number that seems to be consistent).

I couldn't get the cherry tools software working on my computer. it said that a cherry keyboard was not found etc

also, i'm certain that some of the keys are lasered, feel the arrow keys compared to the letters. it's strange. the pbt feels really good, but these keys are pretty low-profile, prolly wouldn't work with any of my other cherry 'boards.

Just got mine.  The keycaps are definitely lasered.  I think the caps in my 3000 are etched a little more deeply.  It sounds kinda hollow, too.  So far, I really like it except for the grey key on the spacebar.  I like the size; it just looks a little weird with the credit card reader on the top.

I can tell its been in the UPS truck all morning.  The keys are damn cold.

OK.  It's already going on my laptop's docking station.  The small right Shift is killing me.  I use my pinky for that key, and I keep hitting the up arrow.  It makes it hard to type ? < > _ + " :  I like the keycaps, switches and size, but the small right Shift makes it damn near impossible for me to write SQL.

That would be nice.  The font on the Filco 'boards is a favorite of mine, too.  I even like the italics.

I didn't put the rubber feet on.  I like my 'boards as flat as possible.  As far as feel goes, it feels just like my 3000, so I really like it, but I am struggling on the right Shift.  The other keys are fine based on the way I press them.  If it had a layout more like the 1800, it would be perfect.  I'm not going to complain, though.  It's hard to beat for $24.

just got today. it is VERY nice considering its price. This is my first Cherry brown switch keyboard so I am much impressed by its smoothness.. wow
I packed up my IBM M for a while. Other than backspace key position it is almost perfect for me!

..though the software does not recognize the keyboard under Win 7. hmm.. that's odd. [*edit* Version 5.5 solves all the problem - you can download it from Cherry web site.

only minor complaint is that this keyboard sits high - I think I need palm rest  support. any suggestion??

I give this keyboard score 9 out of 10 :) very good.

That does it. I had to pop the left Control key cap because my palm was pressing it. Whenever I reached for a T, I'd open a new browser tab. The story would be different if I didn't rest the heel of my left hand on the desktop, but I do.  Fortunately there's no chore in pressing the key without a cap.

I have compared this board with my used MX8100.  MX8100 is much larger, and is also PCB mounted.  The MX8100 misses some keystrokes on occasion in the T-I zone of the keyboard, I suspect it is due to keyboard flex.  This keyboard although the layout is fer-crunked does not miss any keystrokes.  I really like the fact these keys are PCB mounted, although I only have comparative experience with blue cherry plate mounted switched (filco blue cherry 87 and 104 key).  PCB mounting seems to make "bottoming out" noise less significant, also makes bottoming out less shocking to the fingers.

This board is awesome, except for the layout.  The typing experience is far superior to the MX8100, I think it's because of lack of board flex.

Next step I think I'm going to open up the MX8100 and try to stop the board flex issue and see if I like that one better as a result.

I'm no ergo expert but I'm still having a hard time seeing how you can do that if your keyboard is at a semi-proper height.

Elbows are at desktop height, maybe lower by a trifle, heel of left hand resting on desktop with fingers over keys. Right hand hovers, but left hand remains grounded. When I reach for the T, the palm presses the Ctrl.

I swapped the springs between the spacebar and Print Screen, and it helped quite a bit.  I did not, however, swap the stem.  Looking at the grey stem, the tactile bump looks similar to the clears.  The bump on the grey stem is much more pronounced than the brown, but I am not sure I like it.  It seems to get "stuck" on the upstroke, thus making it less responsive.  If the grey is anything like the clears, I am not sure if they would be a switch I'd like.

I have done similar, changed the spring and the gray stem with one of the macro buttons, resulting in the spacebar being a cherry brown instead.

I think the cherry brown spring is so wimpy that the weight of the spacebar itself makes the whole apparatus less springy and responsive.  But it works ok.

I'll disagree with responsiveness of a spacebar with a Cherry brown (my 3000 and Filco are quite responsive).  I will say, though that I don't think the brown spring was designed to lift a stem with a more aggressive tactile bump as the grey.  It's lesser push back on the stem, I think, causes the stem to get hung up on the grey.  The brown spring seems "optimized" for the brown and red (or black) stems.

Keys look like current lasered POM keys with plastic fill. The symbol fills are a bit more pronounced/higher than on the black Cherry I bought a year ago. So maybe it's an earlier generation.

F and J are scooped, I like that.

When I said plastic I was talking of the material of the symbols (the 'paint').

My biggest problem with the Cherry laser-etched keys is that they look cheap.  The "filling" is imprecise at best (I don't mind the color, personally, I don't think the Cherry keys look "dirty").  They're durable, to be sure, but the imprecise filling of the etching screams "cheap" even though they aren't.

I still think you're trading off durability for looks.  Double Shot keys are no compromise keys.

uh, the huge compromise being availability/cost.  big difference between liking the POM keycaps i already have and spending more than an actual keyboard costs just to get some doubleshot keys.

I've become enamored of this 'board too, at least enough that I'm going to replace the Z switch and use it a while summore instead of looting it to install the browns into another board as I had planned.

Something weird. Anyone else get random junk mail with a Cherry brown in it? Good thing I checked it out before tossing the envelope in the trash. I'd feel real foolish to have "lost" the key. Missus thought it was a fake simplified Alps and almost didn't show it to me. Just what I need to replace my Z. Where's my torx, my soldering iron, my spare time? I need those all simultaneously to get this job done.

You'll know the deed's done when I've changed my avatar to a duck on a motorcycle. What a crazy way to seal an envelope.

EDIT: Ripster, is your MX SPOS keyboard 2-key rollover? I'm curious what method you used to test. I get 6-key with the web page

I really like this 'board, too.  The only thing keeping on my laptop and not my daily driver is the layout.  I tend to hit the right side of the right shift when I go for the astrisk, parenthesis, underscore, etc.  For a SQL writer, I use these characters quite often, and I can't seem to press the left side of the shift key; my hand doesn't want to move that way.  The other problem I have is the numpad.  The 0 button is too small.  When I ten-key, I press the 0 with my index finger.  You can only imagine the frustration I have pressing the right arrow all the time.  Otherwise, I love the keyboard as it's about the closest thing I'll get to a G80-1800 with browns as I'll get.

1) The browns on this feel so entirely different to my Filco that its not even funny. They also feel much different to my other G8000 series brown MX board. What the heck. These feel like clears to me.

2) My Nunmpad "+" key does nothing, does not generate a scancode. Anyone else has/had this problem? Im sure the board is fine since no other keys are effected so I think the circuit is fine.

Welcome to the world of Cherry-made 'boards.  The only reason I bought another Filco is that it's hard to get Cherrys in different layouts in the US.  The 3000 is a little too big to use at work and the SPOS 'board's layout is a little too wonky to use all the time (that one's on my laptop's docking station).  If there was someone, anyone, that would distribute Cherry G80-1800's with browns, I would buy three of them and leave Geekhack forever.

Unfortunately for you guys, no one will be stocking that keyboard anytime soon.

Title: New favorite board.
Post by: elbowglue on Tue, 12 January 2010, 03:13:50
Ok.  I have made a few mods to this board, and now I love it.  I acutally think I like it better than my Filco Cherry Brown 104 key.

Heres what I did.

Mapped Left Alt to do nothing, removed the left alt-keycap (revealing cherry brown switch).  Remapped the Tilde button sitting right near the spacebar to Lalt, placed alt keycap on where the tilde button was.  Mapped numlock to the tilde button.  Mapped caps lock to do nothing.

Removed the following keys and replaced them with the blank macro keys: Up arrow, down arrow, left arrow, right arrow, also numlock, numpad 7, numpad 4.  All of these keys are changed to blank macrokeys in appearance.

Why?  Now I can find the arrow keys quickly (they raise up above the regular level of the keyboard), and I don't accidentally overshoot the enter or backspace with my right pinky and get into the keypad section.  The alt is where it should be, and I don't accidentally hit the tilda when I am trying to use alt.

Now this is my favorite keyboard lol.  I'll post pictures tommorrow if anyone is interested.  Only downside is that it looks crazy, but it runs like a fricken champ.

FYI:
Autohotkey:

`::Lalt
Lalt::Return
numlock::`
capslock::Return
+capslock::capslock

I'm strongly considering getting a g80-1800 and doing a full switch transplant too if this current iteration becomes irritating because of the small right shift key.  The only problem I forsee is that the space bar is pretty far to the left on the g80-1800 in comparison with normal keyboards....

It's so it can make a beep when it successfully reads a credit card that is swiped.

Anyone know how to tell the cherry software to only output the card number when you swipe the credit card?  Mine outputs a lot of other stuff including my name and crap, so I can't use it to enter in card numbers when checking out on web sites..

Hmmmm.....

Can you make it click when you type :)

Load up samples of Alps, Buckling Springs, Montereys, Topres, etc. and load the sound to play with each keystroke on the SPOS.

it has a speaker????
idea: someone build a keyboard with a small speaker and onboard flash memory so that youu can program tones directly in the hardware. specifically, game boy noises. this could save lives, people.

Do you type that fast, or does you Model M get that hot?  Mine, has headers and a cold-air intake.  I wanted to add a turbocharger, too, but that would have made the keyboard a little too high.

wicked. my m's an import, it's got a few more WPMs than the domestic thanks to the extra vowels, grounded space bar, proper return key, etc.

just threw a lift kit on my spos, check it:

Title: Z with no undo
Post by: ricercar on Sat, 30 January 2010, 00:48:06
Tonight I replaced my Z key, finally having ambition and means in the same place at the same time. I'm pleased with myself. The Z is in line with its neighbors; I can't tell it was re-soldered.

Before the repair, in order to register the letter Z the old key required me to bear down with great force after it bottomed out. When I removed the key, one of the leads was so loose, it remained in the PC board, requiring a separate desoldering pass. I imagine these facts are related.

THANK YOU FOR THE KEY, RIPSTER!

Reposting elbowglue mods here to appease my organizational obsession.

By the way, I highly recommend cherry brown switch keyboards mounted on PCB, cause it gives you a much better soft landing when bottoming out in comparison to filcos.  Compaq MX 11800 comes to mind, as does the G86-62410EUASGSA, or the G80-3000 from datacal.  Of course the g80-3000 is not tenkeyless.  Oh on the picture below I haven't gotten around to removing the + and Enter on the numpad cause I don't wanna discard the stabilizers yet.

Oh yeah - you can get this keyboard new from dell small business here:
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Retail_POS_Keyboards/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=A0471542
Or occasionally on ebay for a better price.

Redkeycap and White keycaps did not come with this keyboard, they were from other keyboards previously.

This would be slick with a custom fit black panel covering the unused switches.

My own board is relatively staid and boring. I've replaced some clear-capped single shots with double shots from Optima Spoila.

I go back and forth with red caps on ESC and DEL. They're quite useful, but the ostentation is repelling. I go back and forth.

AHA!

Who remembers me saying recently I saw Cherry keyboards on the DELL OPTIPLEX 755 check-outs at my college bookstore?

This is not the unit I saw, it's a different layout, but this would indicate Dell has hookups for Cherry boards.

I propose a new name for this beauty, the g86 "Ricecar SPOS".  Yeah.  It's the fricken bomb.  One of the best parts about this is that a lot of the keys which usually have a stabilizer on normal size keyboards (such as backspace) do not use stabilizers on the Ricecar SPOS, which makes them feel much better, you can feel the cherry brown switch, the stabilizer dosen't sog it down.

I'm still really happy with it.  The totally unused thick top porton of the board reminds me of a model F, it's like the board has a huge forehead.

I spot a Vista. Yuck.

But I like that keyboard, especially the arrow keys from the Wyse terminal keyboards. I've been wanting to get one just for the arrows.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain! I am the Great and Powerful Wizard of OZ!

-

I changed my mind. I don't dislike the aesthetic of the reds. Rather instead, I so love the tight feel of the SPOS stock key caps that I'm loathe to replace any of them (except the brittle crystal-capped ones).

Despite failing the patented ricercar flex™, the SPOS with stock caps has the most sensual feel of any flat (read: Non-Kinesis) keyboard I own. On this SPOS, even Cherry-made double shots aren't as delicious to my fingers as the stock caps.

Key caps removed from this SPOS don't feel this way on any other board, not on a Cherry brown G80-11802, nor G80-6955HPDUS, nor a Kinesis (huge disappointment!). The SPOS caps live in a private Ziplock until I decide I want them back home.

I may marry my SPOS.

Then again, My fingers are historically iconoclastic. I'm currently dating a Cherry black 11900, and she's a delightful mistress.

Had to post the answer here because someone was asking me, and I figured it out.

How do you hook the relegendable keys to your own purpose in AHK?

The keys across the top of the keyboard are F13-F24 keys.  The one right above ESC dosen't seem to do squat.  F13 lives right above F1

Add this line:
F15::Space
And now F15 will be mapped to space bar.

How you do macros and stuff, well that will take some time to figure out

You can use the Cherry software to map the key once and go from there in AHK. I'm not using the Pause and ScrollLock functions, so the top left blank is mapped to Pause, and the top right blank to ScrollLock. AHK takes over from there.

Those are the stickem ones?  How did you get them to fit the stems?

Yes, I eBayed one of the hundred-cap for $8 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280459816526) lots. Took three tries to get to me; I think the seller thought I was scamming him.

The double-sided sticky comes off quite easily, and then I just use a needle nose pliers to munge the square innards, twist and pull, until the inner square is gone, with the inside flat. Then I remove the skirt from a Cherry crystal-top  key stem and superglue (Lexmark type M works, too).

In the first pic of the fake keys, there's some grey discoloration on the key skirts where my flatblade screwdriver stressed the black plastic from the inside enough to show through. My plier technique grew better with practice.

Someone recently posted about testing the extra unused unpopulated row in the ricercar MX SPOS, but I can't find it. Was there any conclusion, or must I reach my own?

I just got my second ricercar SPOS (sold my first one, but got a great deal on this one serial number 253.  This one has been used for a little while but it still feels great.  King of all brown cherries still in my mind)

By the way, the profile on the caps lock key is slightly different than the ASDFG keys.  It was molded in the same shape as the ZXCV row profile.  Anyone know what material these keys are made of?  They are really nice.

Hmm.. PBT eh?  No wonder it feels nice.  Same stuff as topres.  I see some molding artifacts too on this ricercar SPOS as noted earlier on other PBT keys.  Although I think they were there on my old ricercar just that I didn't notice.

Now that i am looking at it I suspect my pink filco may not be the same material as a regular filco.  Although I can only go by memory as I have no black filco keys for comparison.

This is a sweet board. I regret selling the last one :)
