Title: Need help with Orion V2
Post by: zzyjayfree on Sat, 13 February 2016, 10:49:35
Hi everyone

Used to play with SP, GMK keycaps and KB like Filco and such a lot. But just got my hands on this Orion V2 so basically I'm a noob in customize circle  :p. Need some advice/suggestion on this V2 I'm getting.

I assume to finish assembling I will need, switches(haven't decided which one yet), transparent switch covers, stabs, bunch of LED and a cable right? I pretty much will need Sifo's help with assembly I guess.

So what kind of switches am I going for here? 3-pin or 5-pin? I also hear folks saying there's something I can put with my switches so I can change the LEDs easily, what are they called and how much they cost?

Thanks in advance!

Here's a list of what you need:
 - Switches, they're all two pin so I don't know what you mean by 3 or 5 pin.
 - Stabilizers, 7u spacebar for 84 and 86 key layout, 6.25u spacebar for 87 key
 - LEDs(Optional), most prefer 1.8mm LEDs but I personally like 2x3x4mm but there is the slighest interference with some keycaps
 - What you mean by making LEDs interchangeable is called sip sockets. They act as conductive sleeves for the LED legs so rather than soldering the actual LEDs you are soldering the sip socket's legs. They are very cheap.

Sifo no longer offers service so it looks like you'll need to do it yourself.

Not a problem at all, if you need anymore questions I'll be more than glad to answer them. Don't forget you'll need an additional 8 LEDs for the indicators as well. :thumb:

zeal and winkeyless are great for a lot of these parts.

steezus, why do you prefer the 2x3x4mm LEDs?  are they brighter?

Difference between 1.8mm and 2x3x4mm LEDs? Any place I can find these information about customized keyboards?

Thanks I'm newbee

So basically on my shopping list there are:

90 Cherry MX Brown (plus transparent covers for them)
180 SIP sockets for the switches
Costart stabilizers 7u x1 & 4u x4
90+8(Thanks to Steezus) LEDs
a cable (Lindy)

But you mentioned 1.8mm and 2x3x4mm but I'm going for 3mm. Can you explain a bit about the LEDs? And please let me know if you find anything odd up there.

Thanks a lot!

There are multiple places but usually eBay tends to be my favorite since I'm in the U.S. I like to pay the extra couple dollars for somebody inside the states for the item to get to me much faster.

However your best likely scenario is to order from Zealpc.net since he is in Canada as well. His sip sockets are more costly than the ones on eBay but they do not come with the black housing so that will save you a lot of time. Remember that you need 2 sip sockets per LED so 84-87 switches like 8 indicators would require 184-190 sip sockets in total. Zeal also supplies the 1.8mm LEDs there as well so it should be a one-stop shop for you. :thumb:

I said I'd help him out. I only go into retirement when I'm unsatisfied with my work and become emo or get stressed out.

also I don't recommend 3mm if you plan to use thicker keycaps like cherry profile it won't work.

I like to point out that some people refer to the ground as the 3rd pin, and the 2 PCB mounted pins for PCB-mounted switches as pins 4 and 5.

I'm considering GMK Hyperfuse will that work with 3mm?

Haven't got my parts ready.

3mm is the worst option for LEDs in my opinion. 2x3x4mm will have the slightest amount of interference but 1.8mm has none at all.

It's just personal preference - the size of the LED may hit the keycap on the downstroke, so it's better to go as small as possible to avoid clearance issues.

Thanks! I think I'll go for 2x3x4. But I saw people talking about LEDs for the 8 indicators you mentioned before and I was told that those LEDs will have to be 3mm ones?

As for the switches, I will need PCB mounted switches rather than plate mounted switches correct?

It doesn't matter what LEDs you use for the indicators either, I actually used a mix of 2x3x4mm and 3mm LEds because that's all I had for different colors.

As for the switches, I will need PCB mounted switches rather than plate mounted switches correct?

Technically you could use either or but PCB mounted will be the better option. The only difference is that the PCB mounted switches has two extra pegs that clip into the PCB for added stability.

Makes it easier to line up switches too. My lightsaver plate had looser switch cutouts and caused some switches to be crooked when I attempted to use plate mount but maybe I'm just **** at assembly.
