Title: HHKB Type-S vs Stock actuation force - is 45g really 45g?
Post by: deduction on Sat, 13 February 2016, 16:27:48
So, both HHKB v2 Pro variants, Stock and Type-S, are labeled as 45g.  I noticed that that the switches feel significantly less stiff than the switches in its Type-S sibling.  This became significantly more pronounced after I lubed and silenced (hyperspheres) the stock HHKB.  Some of this may be attributable to the (negligibly) reduced travel, but I believe that the Type-S switch is simply more stiff than the stock switch.  I am considering pursuing a 55g swap in the stock HHKB but I would never dream of swapping for a stiffer switch (if one exists?) in the Type-S.

For those who have typed on both, how have you found the Type-S stiffness in comparison?  Would a 55g swap feel closer to the Type-S?  Has anyone bothered to do an actuation test on the HHKB variants (Type-S vs Stock vs Stock silenced)?  I could do it but I don't have enough 1g weights on-hand.  Apologies if this has been brought up before, a quick googling didn't find anything.

**** and I somehow posted this in keycaps rather than keyboards.  Whoops.

I have typed on all variants of HHKB and for me the 45g in both the stock and Type-S is right about the same. Maybe it's the noise that somehow makes it feel different?

55g lubed on a Type-S is a dream though.

i think it's key to remember that the resistance (tactility) for topre is at the top of the keystroke so even though the rings are thin, they do have an effect. I'm not sure about the rings on a type S though.

I have a 23U and a JP HHKB Pro Type-S (What a mouthful), between the two resistance feels the same. However, the rest of the keypress does feel slightly different, the 23U is a bit snappier? I'm inclined to agree with Raymogi about the sound having an effect as well, but fwiw my Type-S has also endured 2 years of abuse so there's the slightest...grainy feeling to it? Maybe that's the o-rings.. Maybe I need to give it a good lubing, who knows. I don't, haha.

Coincidentally I recently picked up a 87U 55G and to me, that 10g jump was pretty big. Not in a bad way, I love it  :thumb:
