Title: [IC] GMK CMYK with Poll
Post by: ghostjuggernaut on Thu, 18 February 2016, 19:52:28
UPDATE with new mock-ups and estimated pricing info. (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=79806.msg2072222#msg2072222)

I was thinking about running this set again, and have been debating to go forward with it or not.  Well I finally decided to get the ball rolling.

This is the set I would like to run as of right now, with the same keys that were ran with RBGYK.  I am considering adding purple  winkeys, similar to the added yellow winkeys of RGBYK.  I'll need to get a new mockup and work through details though.  I have not spoken with GMK since December, but will reach out to them soon depending on how the IC goes.  I am going to stress the shift issues we saw with RGBYK, and do everything in my power to ensure they are not jacked up like the RGBYK ones were.  Also, if this goes to GB, I will be handling this, not MD.  I am going to look into pre-sorted as well to allow for quicker shipping.

So what does GH think about the set, winkeys, presorting?  Any recomendations are welcome and feedback is encouraged.  I will say that I do not plan to add any keys other than winkeys, and any others will take a lot of interest to get added.  I am still pretty busy with school, so if I don't reply immediately that is why.

Lets hear it folks  :thumb:

For now, its the keys in the GMK mockup.  I imagine most will want the winkeys as they did before, and if that is the case they will be black on purple.

Really really enough  CMY/RGB :(
Also Ctrl/ Alt are too much in this set. Delete some keys and reduce the price.

These are the minimum keys I am including. This set covers almost every possible keyboard I can think of. A lot of effort was out into these key choices, and I do not plan to reduce the set. You could work it out with someone to trade the keys you/they do not use.

Additionally, CMYK has not been ran by anyone in 3 or 4 years.

If purple win keys make the race, I would also love a menu key to fully cover standard bottom row mods.

I terms of reduction, I could honestly live without Alt Gr (prefer using normal Alts despite using us int) but don't mind it being included either.

I would suggest dropping r5 and alt gr. I personally use r5, but not enough people do to justify the increase cost in my opinion. Alt gr is the same. Some European people prefer it, but I don't think there are enough to justify the increased price.

As far as presorting goes, I would look at the price. In a set like this that's only ~25 keys, it honestly isn't that bad if you get some help. Depending on how many orders you get, you could probably get it finished in one weekend.

Right now I'm going to consider it. Once I get quotes, I'll let the majority decide which they would prefer.

As for the keys, I do understand that many ppl won't use those two types, but would like to make it friendly for those that do.

With that said, of there is an overwhelming push not to have them, then I may consider it. I'll get quotes with, without, and presorted vs not. Once those come in I'll share with sending and we can go from there. I'll add a poll as well once those come in to help visualize the opinions.

I love the key choices. The selection in the RGBYK set was perfect, and I wouldn't have it any other way for this.

I will say that I do not plan to add any keys other than winkeys, and any others will take a lot of interest to get added.

I read and understand this, but still have to request.  :)

I'd love to see fn keys in Cyan and Magenta.

I would suggest dropping r5 and alt gr.

Maybe I'm alone in this, but as a US ANSI user I like using Alt & AltGr.  Would many people be opposed to dropping the second Alt and being "forced" to use AltGr?

As an ANSI user, I too use AltGr. Gives my bottom row a little variety.

Do you by any chance have a picture of the black legend CMYK form a previous run? I have only ever seen the white legends, which I prefer at least on paper.

I would like to either remove alt gr or remove the extra alt keys.
Either way we currently have 4 unnecessary keys that increase the cost.
Title: Re: [IC] GMK CMYK possibly with some P added
Post by: ghostjuggernaut on Fri, 19 February 2016, 09:40:13
Here is another post with some pics. Interestingly, the right shift has the same issue we saw with the right RGBYK icon shift. So it appears that their legend may be messed up, considering the two sets were produced years apart.

If you're going to do this you might as well drop the text shift keys. If you want to leave in the ISO keys I would leave the ANSI ones as well.

The key selection is perfect as is.

Catering to everyone is not something that's usually an option with GMK, but with a small set like this it is. We can have every key that anyone could possibly want without having an astronomical price. Catering to everyone is something we should aim towards whenever it is viable. In this case it's viable, as was proven with ghostjuggernaut/radio_killah's RGB set.
Title: Re: [IC] GMK CMYK possibly with some P added
Post by: romevi on Fri, 19 February 2016, 14:00:19
When I first joined the RGBYK (when it was a geekhack-only thing) I thought the key selection was a bit excessive and priced adequately high, but I joined anyway.
Now that I have a bit more knowledge and a couple of more boards (and planning others for the future), I realize how perfect the selection is. The R5 caps are wonderful, and I hope the CMYK follows suit.

You should just do a series of these with the same key selections; next will be RGBYW and after that CMYW.  ;D

Recieved some info from GMK today.

Option #1
(http://i.imgur.com/gDlg6Nw.png)

This is the set in the OP.  Basic CMYK
~$37/34 for MOQ 150/250

Option #2
(http://i.imgur.com/B8BvHES.png)

OG set + purple winkeys
~$42/39 for MOQ 150/250

Option #3
(http://i.imgur.com/ouRecw0.png)

The Hoff set
~$44/41 for MOQ 150/250

I think that if we add winkeys, we might as well go with the #3.

Let me know what everyone thinks.

Oh also, I was told that presorting will be included for free with the sets!  Must be something new they are doing.

R4 is what most standard GMK sets use. R5 is what older WKL Cherry boards use.

R4 on the left, R5 on the right.

Hoff set or riot

I prefer the riot set.

It's exactly the same as the hoff set except that the black on yellow fn is a black on magenta and the black on magenta fn is a black on yellow.

So far it looks like option 3 has the majority. I'm still not ready to move to GB. I will start looking into payment options though. Ideally I'll use PayPal, but do not want to start the GB and run into similar issues as I had with RGBYK. If all else fails I'll look into stripe. My goal is to not use Massdrop though. I will hopefully have an update for everyone within a week.

For those that voted #1 or #2, would you still be interested in the additional keys? Also, we have 47 people who voted for the set. I'd like to get that close to MOQ if possible before moving on to GB status.

Why not Massdrop? They helped RGBYK succeed.

So shower_king says his/her CMYK is launching thru massdrop in a few weeks.  It will be interesting to see what happens.

Great that there is Alt Gr! Looking at my CMYW caps right now I hate it for not having Alt Gr. As an US ANSI INTL user I really use Alt Gr very often.

Also looking forward to this group buy!

I would prefer to do it myself and be able to handle any issues directly.

I thought that wasn't going to happen. Guess we'll see how it plays out.

I'd probably be in for 2 Hoff Sets :) I have CMYW but CMYK would be much sexier imo.

$7 for Windows and some fn swag seems like a no-brainer! Passed over quite a few CMY/K sets over the last 2 years and I think this is finally the one for me.

I wish, but unless you use MX sliders with it, you will have a tough time getting it to work.

I'm looking into stripe for payments. If I can get everything setup, I will move it to GB this week. I'll update this thread as things go.

Also I am 90% sure about running option 3. If there are any extreme oppositions, let me know now. But that will most likely be the final set at this point.

I'm definitely using stripe for the GB. Right now I am working with Cody to get a site ready to run the GB from. It's just about finished up, but needs some finishing touches before things go live.
