okay, I don't mean it- you guys are the coolest.
Hey! I'm new to geekhack and I just wanted to say hi! I grew up on an old Apple ALPS board and then took a few decades off mechs until last summer, when I picked up a Rosewill Rk9000v2 with blues (which I can happily recommend to anyone looking for a solid simple full size board). I'm looking to pick up a 60% with a quiet switch that I can take with me to coffee shops, so if anyone has any recommendations I would appreciate it!
I also have a little bit of experience casting resin toys and have been considering trying my hand at a few artisans in the near future! Anyway, it's good to be here and if you need me I'll be pacing back and forth waiting for the Tai Hao Miami massdrop buy from January to come in...
ps does anyone else need a numpad just for Dwarf Fortress?

HHKB is an excellent choice for portability, usability, quietness, and so on :D
If you're going to be making keycaps, you might find the :~$ynth (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=78551.0) interesting.

HHKB looks really neat but I think my next board is either gonna be a 40 or 60% with linear switches. I went to best buy and tried cherry mx reds for the first time ever and it nearly caused an existential crisis for me.

Reds are fairly light, perhaps you might prefer heavier switches, like blacks?

Man you were at Best Buy you should have just picked up any 5 dollar board if you wanted linear. Same feeling anyway.

$5 board = linear and sqiushy.

No way. What rubber dome keyboards all have in common have to be the squishyness. Reds don't feel squishy to me at all. Smooth and crisp is how I would describe them, I guess. I think I want a lighter switch anyway. My fingers get sore after typing on blues for too long. Maybe I'm starting to get carpal tunnel...

MX reds are way too light for me. Perhaps squishy is a bit much, but I can rest my hands on them and find I accidentally press keys all the time.
Currently typing on greens, and even these feel a bit light at times.

This hobby is so subjective and at the same time it's also so hard to actually test switches in person. It can be very frustrating. Greens would ruin me I think. I almost got them on my first board, based on description alone, but I'm glad I went with blues.
I'm a little concerned about reds being too light. I want to try gateron yellows/blacks but can't figure our a way to test them without just buying a board.

That is exactly correct - this is all very subjective.
One person's ideal switch might be a nightmare for someone else.
Massdrop sometimes has drops for switch testers that include some Gateron and even Kailh switches.
But pressing a single switch will not give you a real feeling for typing on a keyboard with that switch in it.
Depending on how soon you want to buy, can you get along to KeyCon 2016 (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=80187.0)? Date TBD apparently, but if you have no urgency then attend, if you can - there are usually dozens and dozens of keyboards with all sorts of switches and modifications that you can try.
