Title: Hello from Hungary
Post by: algernon on Tue, 01 March 2016, 07:46:29
Been lurking at these forums in the past couple of months, but now I figured it is time to post aswell.

A while ago, after watching a talk of someone describing their experience building their own keyboard, I became interested in keyboards - and mechanical ones in particular - again. I have been using a TypeMatrix 2030 for a good few years now, but for a number of reasons, I was looking for something better. I wanted a split mechanical keyboard, one pre-assembled, because I have trouble putting together IKEA shelves (yes, really). I narrowed down the options to the ErgoDox EZ, UHK and Keyboardio M01, and ended up pre-ordering the M01. Looking forward to receiving it hopefully in a couple of months. Meanwhile, I am also looking at my options to get my hands on an ErgoDox (perhaps trying to persuade $employer to get me one...).

As an added bonus, after giving up on learning Dvorak a fem years ago, I am typing this on Dvorak now. My speed is abysmal, and I mistype a lot, because my left hand is OK with the layout, the right one still wants to type QWERTY. But I feel the difference, and I'm not going to give up this time.

On the other hand, the M01 I ordered, and the ErgoDox EZ I am looking at, both have blank keycaps. It will be interesting to learn a new layout without visual aid.

Welcome to Geekhack!

I think I've seen the Keyboardio M01 around, but not heard much about it.  Looks cool, Matias switch too!

Although the custom sculpted keycaps might be trouble to replace, should you decide to.

Learning a new layout with a new keyboard with blank keycaps will definitely be interesting!  Good luck :p

I have asked them, and they plan to offer keycaps only at a later time. That's good enough for me for the time being. Not to mention that as far as I remember, the keycap designs will be open sourced too, so worst case, I can 3D print some, if urgently needed.

Yeah, I'll need that. Been thinking about sticking some labels on the keycaps temporarily, but... that sounds like a bit of a sacrilege.

I'm learning Dvorak for non-programming purposes so my layout may be different. I took some advice from another GH member and printed/laminated a 60% layout as a quick glance guide. After a few days of typing I barely look at the layout. I originally designed a keyset on WASD with the purpose of learning dvorak but as it turns out, I don't even look at the keys. A split layout would have been a 100% waste of $ since I want to keep QWERTY for guests to use.

Here is what I had in mind at first:

Here is what I taped to my computer monitor:

I have a normal QWERTY keyboard for my wife and any guests who may want to use the keyboard (most guests, we just use tho XBox360 controllers to play games, though :D), so luckily, I have complete freedom on how I set up my keyboard.

Here is what I taped to my computer monitor:

Taping to the bottom of the monitor, that is a good idea! Will have to raise the screen a little for that, but should work. Thank you for the adivce!

When I was learning QWERTY in class the teacher had all the laminated keyboards on top of the monitor. I'm sure there is a way to do it. I'm just lazy  :p Cheers

The top is already occupied, and I need to raise the monitor anyway.

I got my quote sort of from Red Dwarf.  Lister got two packs of flour for Kochanski, and said "flour ... flours".

Hi Algernon! I have flowers for you :(

Thanks, but I'm not buried in the back of the garden just yet. Mental capacity is still on the rise (or so I believe, some people may disagree, but they're wrong). :)

I lived with someone that raved about Red Dwarf to such an extent that I shied away from it. Perhaps I can watch an episode now  (http://i.imgur.com/ZGHJ6Bj.gif)

I actually have no clue what Red Dwarf is. My name, and the reference to flowers originates from a book by Daniel Keyes: Flowers for Algernon.

Well worth a read. But don't watch any of the films, those completely destroy the atmosphere of the book.

Red Dwarf, and Flowers for Algernon. My book list grew from 30-120 because of twitter. Now GH?!  Cheers
