Title: Daylight Savings
Post by: njbair on Thu, 03 March 2016, 12:39:07
Just a friendly reminder for all of our U.S.-based Geekhackers. The time springs ahead one hour this weekend, so don't forget to be one hour late to everything on Sunday!

All joking aside, does anyone else love DST as much as I do? It's literally my favorite chronological boundary condition.

I absolutely hate DST. I also hate timezones and set all my personal clocks and devices to UTC.

Not really...AFAIK most U.S. states have been using DST since WWII or thereabouts.

I think it was more widely adopted in the US in the 60s and 70s, but it's still been common here for a long time.

I don't even think it helps in the USA, since all the buildings are shuttered so tightly and run high power florescent all day

It makes a big difference. Summer is when you stay out late, so it's nice that it stays light longer.

I HATE daylight savings time. Living on the far western edge of a large time zone (Central) means that in the midsummer, it sometimes doesn't get full dark until almost 10pm. As someone who isn't a fan of sunlight anyway, I'm not a fan of the day being artificially extended an hour later.

Post by: fohat.digs on Thu, 03 March 2016, 13:55:13
I like it, and I have also almost always lived on the western side.

But I don't like to have to get up in the dark, and I also don't like having it get light before I have to get up, so keeping sunrise and wake-up time closer together suits me.

it doesn't stay light longer , only by 1 hour. which isn't really enough.

Better to use that light up between 9-10 p.m. than between 5-6 a.m.

Post by: rowdy on Thu, 03 March 2016, 20:00:30
I dislike daylight saving and daylight losing.

In winter it's dark when I go to work in the morning and dark when I get home at night.

In summer it's bright sun light when I go to work in the morning and the same when I get home at night.

In between it's varying degrees of lightedness.

I don't see why we have to keep changing the clock time every 6 months.

Indiana used to be the worst.  The whole state was officially in Central from 1918 to 1961.  Some places didn't respect that, the unofficially went with Eastern.  Some even observed Daylight Savings.

Then 1960s arrived, and along with rock and roll, flower children, Vietnam, and The Great Society, most of Indiana officially switched to Eastern.  Some did the Daylight Savings thing, some didn't.

The switch was rough for awhile, because eventually 82 counties observed Eastern, and then 10 Counties in northwest and southwest were Central.  Finally, stability.

Well, it's not always 10.  Sometimes 1 or 2 counties would jump in the Central time zone and then leave.  They can't make up there mind!

But wait!  For the longest time, the 80-82 Indiana counties in the Eastern counties did not observe daylight savings time.  They never changed the clocks.  Central always did Daylight Savings.  In the summertime, all of Indiana was in the same time zone when Central jumped forward.  In the winter, the Eastern/Central time difference was observed.

But wait! A few of the counties near Louisville and Cincinnati observed Daylight Savings with the rest of the Eastern time zone.  If you're commuting across the Ohio River to the big city, don't you want to be on the same time?

Then Mitch Daniels came along.  A businessman that could solve problems and deliver.  There were some rough patches in 2006 and 2007 figuring out exactly which counties fit best in Eastern or Central.

But My Man Mitch eventually solved the problem of Indiana's time zones.  10 counties in Central, 82 in Eastern, and Daylight Savings for everybody!

I have accepted the fact that when I drive through IN I simply will not know what time it is.  Even my phone doesn't update right away, so I honestly have no clue until I get close enough to Indy that I can be confident I have left Central.  Y'all need to stop commuting out of the state and get your **** figured out.  :P

We're going to to the opposite way soon.  it's dark when I go to work in the mornings, and light when I get home.

Soonish we're supposed to switch so it will be light in the mornings again, and not quite so dark in the evenings.

For a couple of weeks it is actually night time dark when I head home from work in the city, but most of the winter it's still lightish in the city, but is actually dark when I get home.

The amount of daylight changes quickly around the equinoxes, so we should be back to where we were (morning-wise) in a couple of weeks.
Those of us on the north half, that is.

My boss had the same deal with his dog.

Honestly, I hate this. I loved waking up in the morning to glorious sunlight. This morning, I drove in the goddamned rain, pitch black, still a bit sick from this weekend. It was awful.

I've been waking up in the dark the entire winter.  I'm just excited to actually have some light on the tail end of the day.  Who cares if it's dark when I'm half-asleep driving to work anyway?  Not like I'll even remember.

I still think it should just be abolished entirely, along with timezones. The Earth's rotation is at the same point no matter what number you slap on it, if we all used a single reference point like GMT/UTC and never changed it due to stupid nonsense like DST, everyone would always be on the same page and nobody would ever have to worry about resetting clocks and screwing up sleep patterns. It's archaic, ignorant, and asinine.

That entire "explanation" seems to have been written by someone who doesn't have the good sense to just ask his relative what are good times to call where he lives. "I'm reachable between 0100-1100" would have saved him all the effort writing, and the cost of a webhost.

Yeah.  That's like calling your uncle and finding out he works night shift - you should have known that!

Also, the author over-simplifies the "easy" case and over-complicates the "hard" case.  If finding out what time it is in Melbourne with time zones is as easy as googling it, why isn't it equally as easy to find out where the sun is at a given moment (instead of hunting down a webcam  )?  Surely there would be a resource for answering the question "Are most people in this city awake at this time?", no?  The outlined example is really only relevant for the first week of this change, until someone decides "Hey!  I should make a tool to help people out!"
