I just made an account, figured I'd post something here. Basically I'm a broke college kid trying to get his first mechanical keyboard. I've been looking into tenkeyless ones... perhaps even looking into building one from winkeyless (although I have no idea how to lol). Nice to meet you all!

Welcome!

Welcome to Geekhack!
Building a keyboard is usually more expensive than buying one ready made, as you need to source low quantities of all the parts and generally don't get much discount.
Have you considered getting a used keyboard? If well looked after, a mechanical keyboard should last for years, and even several owners.
Take a Model M, for example. Most of those are coming up to 30 years old, and apart from a few rivets falling off they basically just keep going. And if you can find one in the right place and time, they can be acquired for not much money.

Well I'm not that broke lol. Anyways unlike some of you guys here having 10's of keyboards - I only intend to have one so I can splurge on it!

Good luck with that :p
I started out thinking I'd only get one or two - why would I need more? Now I have lots.

No one gets just one. That is ludicrous. But if you are intent on getting just one do it right and get an HHKB.

It's a good thing I like the puppers, or this would be far too heartbreaking.
HHKB 4LYFE!

It seems like the basic way of greeting new members is having Rowdy say hi and forcing them to buy a HHKB...

It's not people say "hey, rowdy there is a new person in the New Members section, go say hi." :p
Edit - It's not like*

I mean he always is there to greet new members. Which is standard here. It's really nice of him to do so and I have respect for him doing it!

Mechanical Keyboards are like good potato chips...you can never stop at just one. Currently after selling off several i have reviewed used etc i'm down to 8 in my possession currently. And compared to many members that's really not even that many.

...well today I learned what a HHKB is haha (don't see what's so special about it however).

You need to try one ;)
Go along to a meetup, if you can. Someone usually takes an HHKB along, and try.
It might not grab you in the first 5 minutes, common practice is to try using only the HHKB for a week or so, to get used to its little layout quirks, then the majority of people have difficulty going back to their old keyboard.
There's an HHKB tour going on at the moment, where a brave and generous member has let his HHKB tour around the country, so people can try it for a week before sending it on to someone else. You'd probably need to get a bit better known on the forum to participate in another one of those, but it is something to work towards.
And ignore that lot up there - I don't force people to buy HHKB. You can settle for a nice SSK, or a F122 even, and we'll all be happy :D
