Title: Cherry g80 3000 spacebar green switch. Hep plz!
Post by: MISTERCROW!!1! on Thu, 10 December 2009, 08:11:37
Hi all, I just got my g80 keyboard with blue switches. It's really nice, but the spacebar is much stiffer than the other keys :(
I pulled it off and noticed that it has a green switch.
What do I do ??? How do you switch the switches??
I am a keyboard noob :(

Push it slightly harder? :)

You can always swap it with a less used key on the board, or one that you won't mind being heavy such as the Esc key.

I think it would be cool to have one key that is singnificantly louder than the others, and requires a hammer to get it to register.

The G80-3000 has PCB-mounted switches, so swapping springs and stems can be done without soldering. There are two tabs on the left and right side of the switch. Pull them away from the switch and lift up (I use a bent paper clip to pull the tabs). You might have to lift both sides at the same time. Once you open the switch, the rest is trivial.

Here's a detailed guide (http://my3c.com/D5/viewthread.php?tid=4625&extra=&page=1) on how to open PCB mounted Cherry switches (like the ones in your board).

Also how are you supposed to take the keys off and put them back on? I just pulled them off, and pushed em back on. Only I saw someone post that it took 45 minutes to put the space bar back on?!?

Probably it was another keyboard model with some fancy space bar stabilizer. Cherry keycaps are quite easy to remove and put back on.

Just pull them off using a keypuller or some bent paperclips.

It's all much easier with the top case removed though.

Someone modded their 'board to all "greens" (spring swap). I can't remember who, though. Sixty?

I can barely feel any tactility on the key where I swapped the grey spring (brown stem, grey spring).  The heavier spring seems to absorb most of the subtle tactility of the brown stem.

It was huha!

I have some greens in my Filco though. I swapped the spacebar, esc, and windows key for green switches :)
