I would refuse any offer with "shared shipping", just to make a point ;) Perhaps he would have sold it if you plainly offered $40, instead of letting him calculate how much you wanted to obfuscate.
Oh, I stated there plainly in words that I was willing to offer up to $60 with an addition $30 as a reimbursement from my side for the relative high shipping cost (estimate around $50) to Malaysia.
Too bad that it didn't went through, but never mind.

It's Psychological, if you offer to pay him less, he might accept, if you offer to take something away, he would most likely decline, even though resulting to the same ultimate total.
