Title: This place is bad for me
Post by: migman on Fri, 11 December 2009, 12:07:51
Hi all,

Just found this place in the few days and it's bad for my wallet.  I am not new to mechanical keyboards as I had a Deck Legend up until earlier this year.  The Legend met it's demise due to an unfortunate orange juice incident (my wife).  I put my old Logitech something-or-other back into service and kind of forgot about replacing the Deck.  Enter two days ago...I find this place and the next thing I know I have purchased a new Legend tactile (on the UPS truck now) AND a CST 2545 trackball.  I am in trouble...

And just before Xmas, too.  For shame.  Your wife better be getting something good.

Congrats, and welcome to GeekHack!

Congrats and be sure to talk up what a BAAAAAD man Tiger Woods is.  My strategy is to point out how trivial fooling around with a few extra keyboards are in comparison.

you've been messing with that silicone hussy realforce again, haven't you

If you haven't thrown that Deck away, I would like to get it from you. Provided it was tactile.

I'm one of the few whose wallet has resisted the forces of this forum. At least for now.

Just make sure the alcohol dries before you power up the keyboard. I've noticed funny things with electronics wet with alcohol when they're turned on.

I completely disassembled the old Deck and following directions from the Deck forum (I think) I completely submerged the PCB in water (yes, water) and gently cleaned it.  I let dry for a couple days, reassembled, crossed my fingers, plugged it back in and...it still worked just fine.  I used it for a while afterward but the affected keys were still not the same (slow to retract) so I took it out of service.  I still have it (Cherry blacks, btw) and maybe someday I will try to repair it again.

Sounds like you have some OJ residue in the switch housing causing things to be a little sticky. You may have to take the switches apart to really clean them.

Also yes this place does tend to cause you wallet to get thinner.

I just realized that the keyboard I'm typing on right now doesn't have this problem,  the Industrial Model M mini has drainage channels.

Cleaning is remarkably easy.

You are absolutely ridiculous.

OP: You will not like us here.  Or your wallet won't.  And most likely your wife.  But you'll love us.  It'll all be ok, we'll get through it together.

She's gonna need a bigger spell.
