Has anybody told that guy about GeekHack?

Too bad Mr. Prof. doesn't like it as much as we do.

Looks like it might be a Smith-Corona, but I could easily be wrong.

I took my slide rule to a college math exam in the 88-89 timeframe. The Chinese teaching assistant didn't know what it was. I taught him a few tricks and he let me use it. I was careful to show only parts of it, because there were some helpful formulas on the reverse side scales ... formulas which we were being tested on.

MMM, slide rules. I once got a stolen 23-scale slide rule replaced for free by Post by writing them (snail mail days) that I missed it more than my also-stolen HP programmable calculator.

Wait, wait, this is the KEYBOARD forum I'm on today.

I miss my HP calculator.  I should have never left the batteries in it.  RIP.

He was typing a bit slow. Should've asked Ron Mingo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Itz2ghPDiEY) to come in and type the notes for him. I bet noone would tell him to stop.

Well, it was only a few years back I left high school, and my last English teacher had a big "no word processor" rule on homework, to prevent spell check cheating. I immediately put up a hand and asked about using a typewriter. A bit surprised, he said it was okay. So, a large portion of my essays were typewritten on a 1940s Smith-corona (still have that awesome typewriter...).
Not too much later in that year, I convinced him to allow my laptop, a Tandy model 102 with 32K storage! It was an easy sell, as he understood that if I installed a spellchecker the dictionary file would use the entirety of the computer storage. So, all of my notes in English (and history) were all typewritten on the Tandy. When the work was complete, I printed to an old Canon bubblejet and saved a backup copy on the AA-powered tandy portable disk drive (400K in 2 banks on a custom format 3.5" floppy).

Maybe it was a sign of things to come with I was in grade 8 using a slide rule when I had forgotten my calculator...

Still, looking back, the 4 seconds it took to go from off to "ready to work" was pretty awesome (the 20 hour battery life didn't hurt either). Too bad we didn't have those specs on the average notebook now!

I'm a fan of Windows CE handhelds from a decade ago with a WiFi card.
Visiting and posting to forums is no prob. And a lot lighter to tote than my manual typewriter.

I still use my Bubblejet from 1993 for all my printing needs. They're great, compact printers that just get the job done. (except when they run out of memory)

  • 1-2 second boot time
  • Enough power for everything short of YouTube
  • no cooling fan required
  • under 2 pounds
  • 10-12 hour usable battery per charge
  • did i mention the 1-2 second boot time?

I've got one of those, a Handheld PC (H/PC) with Windows CE 2.11 on it. I've got to get a wireless card for it though.

There's one about 20 minutes away from my house. Time to go computer shopping!
