Title: What tech purchase do you most regret having purchased?
Post by: LiquidEvilGaming on Sun, 27 March 2016, 17:53:42
Be it due to over paying, or the device being a POS,or just being not what you expected what piece of tech did you buy you regret most?

For myself it would be when i bought a Macbook Pro in 2009

It wasn't a horrible machine but given the price it commanded i could have done much better with a windows equivalent or Linux laptop.  It overheated quite frequently to the point it was uncomfortable to use in my lap.  OSX i had not used since the PowerPC days and nothing new really ""wowed"" me for the premium price Macs command.  The build quality of the exterior was fairly good but given an ASUS zenbook is built just as well for much less...The logic board had to be replaced twice and i finally ended up selling it in 2011 and bought a Dell latitude instead (Which i still have and still runs very well as a backup laptop to this day).  Never again would i consider a Macbook at the prices they command short of a major price drop i can simply do much better with a Windows/Linux based machine for far less.

Runner up:  The Playstation Vita , such a powerhouse of a handheld upon it's launch yet the handheld basically only had a library of RPG's and little to no support from Sony after the first year.  While i enjoyed several rpg's the handheld had to offer and i felt it was more "me" than the 3DS (purely from a hardware standpoint) the memory card prices and mediocre at best library made me regret how much i invested into the platform given Sonys almost failure to even acknowledge the handheld existed.

Very curious to hear what all of your biggest tech purchase regrets are,

PS4. I almost literally never play it because of my pc. The only time I've played it is when arkham knight was getting almost negative fps on pc...

When i built my new rig i felt similarly and sold my Ps4/xbox 1 and wii-u and moved the gaming topics of my YOutube channel purely to PC so i can relate.

I've had 2 or 3 recent Macbooks and I inevitably sell them after a few months for the same reasons. I currently have one that was issued to me at work and it's not bad with 16GB RAM and a quad core i7, but I could get something better for about $500-$1000 less.

I sort of regret getting in on the first batch of RaspberryPis in 2012. They were very finicky when it came to power supplies and not useful for much, other than being used as a SAMBA share. The Pi2s are pretty awesome though!

Tefal steam iron. They suck. Drip water, leak, too much or little steam. But unfortunately I do not know a less crappy brand.

dry cleaner.. (http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/onion-head/ahaaah-onion-head-emoticon.gif?1292862489)

But I heard those  steam pump thingies that look like small vacuum cleaners can do the creases faster than an iron..

It's like, you just hang up ur shirt, yea ?  then you just spray it with the steam.. and it's straight..

I guess you could do this for the majority of the shirt,  and then just have to iron the collar area..

Yup, did this at a clothing store I worked at in high school. They work pretty damn well, actually. Trying to remember, I don't think collars were an issue because they still had those cardboard supports in them in the store.

No idea what owning one would be like. Irons really aren't that difficult to use..

Think it's been a while since I bought crappy tech. Maybe the Pioneer receiver in my car, thing is a piece of trash, but it gives me Bluetooth  Seriously I can't believe they retail for the price of an iPad (I got mine open-box on the cheap though). Complete and utter garbage.

I'm sure I'll have others, but there's only one that pops into my head now.

Back when the 6800GT was the best card on the market, SLI was still very new and exotic. I bought an SLI motherboard and a pair of 6600GTs since theoretically a pair of them using SLI properly would run better than a single 6800GT. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware of the SLI profile stuff and how finicky it was. It really hit home when FEAR came out and I saw the 6800GT's benchmarks and compared them to my own. I lived with that boneheaded mistake until the 8800GT was released, which was 3-4 years, I think.

Had one of the last PowerPc versions of those with bluetooth and a whopping 1Gb of ram!  Gave it away recently to a family that would actually use it.

Thing is... hanging it dripping wet doesn't always solve the trick. But do those steamers actually really work?

I bought an MSI Ghost Pro laptop, which was a pain from day one. The trackpad was horrible, it had literally 25 minutes of battery life, and the gaming performance wasn't great. It was also expensive and felt quite flimsy. The model I had was also reputed to have some of the BIOS / UEFI backdoors from China in it, and I took a pretty substantial loss in selling it. I built a new desktop after, which I quite like. That definitely ranks pretty highly.

I'm not sure this counts, but the item I had the biggest remorse over was definitely an Acura ILX sport package. While the car was reasonable enough to drive, the seats were unbelievably uncomfortable on long drives and driving the stupid thing just made me unhappy. I was thrilled to unload it and buy another Jeep.

Oh man.. The 6600gt was gold back in the day. I had a couple. Even modded some to fit a quieter cooler. They were relatively cheap but great and especially in SLI.

I never heard good things about MSI laptops OR their supposedly great motherboards. I'm wondering what their reputation was built on.

Iv'e actually had excellent luck with MSI motherboards(Both my current desktops run MSI motherboards as well without issue) and HORRID luck with Asus which is supposedly superior.  That said most laptops are made by a handful of OEM's and simply re branded such as Compal,Clevo etc etc Are MSI laptops even made by MSI? Or just one of several OEM rebrands like the extreme majority of laptops really are?

On a total side note i wish my younger sister had your luck with Jeeps, she's had two Grand Cherokees which both near fell apart at 100k and now she has a Compass that's been in the shop almost as much as it's been on the road (2014)

Personally iv'e never owned one as i loathe American cars but given seeing her experience with them i'm shocked she bought her third, it IS comfortable though that's really hard to deny.

Yeah, that's probably true. For MSI, I'm talking about around 2005-2010, never touched the brand after that out of disappointment. Went the ASUS route for motherboards, but they also failed on me occasionally, especially DOAs. Tried gigabyte, but those were really hit or mis for me unfortunately.

I actually was under the impression most motherboards were actually produced by ASUS (not Foxconn) but to different specs and levels of quality but I could have that completely wrong. Just heard it once.

I'm fairly certain though not positive that is not the case with motherboards unlike laptops.  That said to my knowledge ASUS is the #1 most sold brand of motherboards worldwide i believe ,However i stress the fairly certain part,i do tend to buy cheaper motherboards as i don't overclock and i'm not an SLI fan so a basic level suits my needs fine and typically it just so happens MSI usually has several good deals in the price range of motherboards i usually buy.  Gigabyte i do seem to hear very mixed results on though varying wildly model to model as far as motherboards go.

MSI motherboards are functionally pretty good, and they have some nice features. The laptops, however, were typical "cheap Chinese" type build. They're the sort of stuff you almost expect for knock-off parts, in terms of physical construction, which is a bummer.

RE: Jeeps - My first Jeep was a 1996 XJ Cherokee, which I bought barely used in 1997, and drove from about 15k miles to 240k miles without any real incident. I did a load of work to it and off-roaded it hard. My current Jeep is a 2010 2-dr Wrangler, which is in the process of being built up. It's already modified a decent amount, and is well on the way to being a great off-road toy.

Only the MSRP $150+ boards are good.. everything below that number is very cut quality..

The msrp isn't the street price though, they're usually $30 less than msrp at the microcenter/online sales.

The latest tech regret is Android Tablets.
I bought a Lenovo a while back, used it so little, the battery is all but shot, that's better than the Asus I bought to replace it (I got a good deal on both).  I thought maybe a better tablet would get me to use it more and I had it a total of 3 days before it locked up, decided I didn't need it and I sent it back.

It's not that they are bad, but I just have no use for them, just like my first netbook, it was neat, tiny, and small, but when it came to actually doing anything, it was inferior to all my other tech. I'd probably use my Baytrail tablet more if I could run Linux, but since that doesn't work, it pretty much only gets used when I'm dining out and don't want to use a laptop or my phone. I used it to run my printer for a while, but once I got my mini laptop, it's been used less and less.

i recently bought a 150 euros NIB microsoft trackball from like 15 years ago..
reviews on it totally hyped me up, and when i found one NIB locally i immediately snagged it. why? well, i knew it would be totally undamaged, unscratched, etc..
it looked very comfortable, had a scroll wheel, 5 buttons, reviews were wild about the thing, plenty of people are quite sad about the fact it was discontinued..

well, it's a piece of ****. i wasted my money and still feel mad at myself for being so stupid.
i guess the reviews were wild about its ergonomics and features, but not its internals - the bearings are crap, and the sensor is absolute garbage. M1 is incredibly mushy and just feels terrible..
the bearings can potentially be replaced, but the sensor can not. M1 can also not be fixed because it's a design flaw.

the worst part is that i feel like this thing is worth no more than 10 euros, but selling it for only 10 would just hurt too much.
so i guess i'm stuck with the thing forever. might as well throw it away.

I have a tablet for mobile entertainment, and the battery life of a normal phone is much more useful in both my work and private matters. And it doesn't help that it was some crappy no-name brand that would lag doing just about anything. Thankfully I already sold it.

Battery life is horrible on smartphones, that's for sure. I'm still wondering how we end up with "accepting" 1 to 2 day max battery life for an iPhone. Before the iPhone, Nokia's were famous for holding up 1-2 weeks in standby. How did marketing convince us we want to continuously charge our phone?

Somehow much easier to do stuff on and the fact that it's always buttery smooth when you play games on it. I own a Nexus 6P also but even that beast can't play game as smooth as an iOS device.

iOS devices definitely are smoother overall, but I prefer the customization and freedom of stock Android devices, even if it means all those third-party apps make the experience a little jarring and laggy at times.

iOS devices definitely are smoother overall, but I prefer the customization and freedom of stock Android devices, even if it means all those third-party apps make the experience a little jarring and laggy at times.

I myself went back for many reasons but here are my major ones

1. Even though Android devices on paper are more powerful iOS is just so much better optimized even my now aging iPad mini with retina feels smoother than newer Android tablets. Much the same is true with their phones from my own experiences.

2.  Long term software and security support, i often access account information for work and login to websites on the go where i order from for work on the go and Apple devices are supported better both long term software wise and generally in the security department as well.

3. Applecare+ In my line of work it's not uncommon to incur physical damage to ones tablet or phone and carrier plans are OUTRAGEOUS for both cost a month and deductible cost to replace a device.  Third party plans are generally very shady...Squaretrade is alright but even they only cover repairs up to the cost of the device and then the warranty is considered over...for a smartphone or tablet that can be one major repair sometimes.  Applecare+ is simply the most reasonable priced option for the protection it offers on devices of such cost that are used daily IMO.

4. If i need a RIGHT NOW repair or replacement there are tons of Apple stores near me..at worst i at least get a loaner for a few days.  With android phones if they need to be sent to the manufacture you either need a backup phone on stand by or sit and wait for weeks to get your device back.

5.  The lightning cable, iv'e never had a lightning cable or port fail on me....ever.  I have had plenty of Micro USB ports fail on me and often at the worst possible times....but again even should the lightning port fail as in #4 getting it repaired or replaced is WAY faster and way easier.

I could drone on with a ton of other reasons honestly...and i don't hate Android or the devices within it's ecosystem not at all.  Android has many clear benefits of it's own and anyone who denies that really IS just being an Apple fanboy.  It just so happens Apple devices in general suit my needs and wants at this time better than Android devices to.  Should that ever change in the future so will the devices i buy.

People complaining about cellphones are doing it wrong..

STOP USING IT,  problem solved..

Everything is better on PC..   MINIMIZE cell use to absolute terms..  because it's a disappointing experience every single time..

Screen is small..  My hands are tired..  it doesn't respond quickly.. Takes me 10x as long to post something on it..

AND... AND it gives me Wrinkles from having to squint my eyes so often.. (http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/onion-head/lol1-onion-head-emoticon.gif?1292862512)

More than 1080p on a laptop monitor. Poor graphics support leads to screen tearing, and in general you have the higher power consumption - a big FU at the end of it all, given that it was supposed to be the "trade-off" for the benefit of a higher res screen.

Id like to note that I got a WQHD screen, as I was fairly sure 4k was super dumb - but a friend convinced me 4k was amazing (And I totally interrogated him about his choice), and the bloody company really sold it... fk

Sony Bluetooth Audio (A2DP) receiver. This thing drops out and pauses the connection quite frequently, and in between the dropouts it speeds up and slows down the music, raising and lowering the pitch in a most annoying way.

I regret switching from my LG G4 to an iPhone 6. The only reason I did was because the plan through my job is really cheap. I could cancel it and just reactivate my G4, but when I cancelled the contract I had to pay $585, and that will be a huge waste if I reactivated without waiting a few more month for that to kinda pay itself off.

I agree with almost all of it, but my iPhone does respond quickly. I'm not necessarily an Apple-fanboy. But my iPhone is really really fast. But for the rest, yeah pretty much. Only thing I really miss on my desktop is Whatsapp.

I bought a Sentey Revolution that I'm not happy about. It rocks if I put to much pressure on my pinky/ring finger and it glides poorly due to the tiny ceramic feet. I'm tempted to get some tempered glass but that seems like too much for this mouse. The weights throw off the center of mass in such a way that I can't even use the damn things.

I regret cancelling my plan for my LG G4.

At work we have the option of getting a work phone, and it's super cheap with unlimited data, but the only option you have is a 64GB iPhone 6.

I cancelled my plan to save money, but I regret it. I want Android back (still have the phone, but no service). I could just reactivate it, but I paid $585 to cancel the plan (they were supposed to send me a box to ship the phone back to them and reimburse me $200, but they never did so I just said screw it and kept the phone), so if I re-start then I'll have basically dumped that money down the drain. I'm going to have to wait a few more months until the lack of monthly payments at least makes up for that cancellation fee.

When MP3 players where first getting started I bought the Dell DJ instead of the IPod. I honestly thought the DJ looked better than the IPod and it was cheaper at the time. Man was this a mistake. The settings would reset each time you shut the DJ down. So, when you restarted it, album songs would be listed alphabetically instead of how they were organized by the artist. IT WAS HORRENDOUS! Also, the backlighting was glitchy, buttons were intermittent, and the bugger was heavy AF.

Bitfenix Prodigy as a LAN case. It's just too ****ing wide. It's a cube not a LAN case. Poor design, and I wish I planned more.

Otherwise I always spend too much on tech because I know it's important. There isn't a tech purchase that I have regretted more than "oh this feature is lacking but still better than the competition".

Compaq Presario 2200

I was a little kid and I was psyched that my parents bought a new PC for me. I was literally jumping around the house for like hours. Admiring every text on the screen and every dialog and window. It came with Encarta and MS Office 95. I soon got VB 5.0. Times were good.

But soon, that PC started falling into pieces. CDRom messed up. Fans heating up. Speakers making weird noises. IRQ conflicts oh yes.. but not sure whether those conflicts were the computer itself or win95's "great" interrupt handling.

And then I found out everything in that box was fake. Cyrix CPU. No proper Hardware Acceleration. Most games were still dos by then. But soon I could not enjoy HW accelerated DX games.

Nothing major I can think of atm, but electronic stuff from Asian eBay sellers are awful. Takes forever to arrive and then doesn't function.

Cables, adapters, chargers, Blu-Ray drives—whatever it is it will inevitably either be dead on arrival or at the best of times malfunction not long after.

Bought a Dual Link DVI-D cable a few months ago. When it arrived it turned out the signal was only outputting 1080p, not 1440p. Returns and refunds are a joke.

Plug and pray you mean ;) Yeah... those were the times. I alwas had IRQ conflicts and had to manually try to fix it in the BIOS. Sometimes I even had to physically swap cards in the ISA / PCI slots because Windows 95 just wouldn't work properly.

And then that feeling when you installed win95 and finally setup worked and everything seemed to work after driver installation... That was my high back then :P

I got scammed once, when buying a Nokia N900. But, that's not really an actual purchase in the end.

Otherwise, it's just a ton of stuff, that I've never really used. My high-end TI calculator is probably the worst in this regard. Nobody told me theoretical computer science doesn't require actual hands-on calculations, unlike engineering.

Although, when look back, my first thinkpad, T40 (still IBM), was a PITA. I got it second-hand from some guy and didn't do my homework. One of two USB ports turned out to be defective, and that model had ATi Radeon GPU, that was infamous for cold solder joints issues. I eventually ended up spending too much time trying to bake the mobo. It was an useful experience though.

A used graphics card, high-end. Less than $100 cheaper than new. Should have valued the safety and other perks of NIB higher than I did, to say the least. Ended up wasting additional cash too, almost adding up to the $100 difference. No more, never again. It was a Gigabyte Radeon 280X with the WindForce3 cooler, Battlefield 4 edition.

I regret much more a purchase I didn't make — I struggled with avoidable problems for several years due to my reluctance to replace the mobo on a system with OEM Windows licence, in the event the problem wasn't the mobo (in which case I'd have wasted my money). Should have given it a try earlier than I eventually did. The replacement didn't make all of my problems with this system go away, but it helped a lot and restored overclockability, which means some free power, since I'd already had aftermarket coolers on stuff.

I bought 4 different balls, hoping to find one I liked, but I cant get used to any of them enough to not feel extremely clumsy.

CST 1550, Kidstrack, Logitech trackman marble non scroll thumb ball, and trackman marble mouse with the ball on top.

85 bucks that is literally never used.

My XPS 13 Laptop.  Nothing wrong with it per say- the Surface Book just came out a little after it.  And Dell sucks just as much as when I bought one before.  They gave me a price match so I wouldn't pick it up from Microsoft's store for cheaper... and their Indian billing dept keeps calling me and leaving an extension that doesn't work because apparently it shows up as a charge back.

My livescribe also - it's good tech, but I just haven't been able to integrate it into my workflow, and having to use their notebooks is more of a pain than I thought it would be.  And my mind keeps me from just using the notebooks, because everything is recorded, so I feel like everything has to be perfect and usable.

You need to take a WMO, and glue it to the bottom of the track ball..

That's the best trackball..

Switching to a trackball boosted my accuracy quite a bit. I'm hoping CST trackballs don't suffer the same ball rolling issues as logitech trackballs do. After a good cleaning the ball sticks. I don't want to add grease to my trackball. Plus if you drop the damn balls they'll flatspot :(  Billiard balls for the wins

How long did it take for you to acclimate to the ball life?

I had cursor accuracy after the first day. It took me nearly a week before I could flick the ball with some accuracy

Who plays FPS with a trackball?

*raises hand* Just revisiting old FPS games though

Edit - I think the LMB omron switch on my trackman is dying :-[

Buying two R9 270Xs instead of one R9 280X...

This is something that I have almost done a couple of times. I always just save more money and get a better card. I want to try crossfire/sli but the performance doesn't scale very well.

I got some a while ago that were pretty good.  Of course, much more than $10.  They work well when I'm swimming, so that's a bonus.

bought it on a whim for $40 off woot.com. sat in my closet for years.

Although I might actually not regret it, if eBay prices are any indication :-o

I bought a Nintendo 3DS. A year following my purchase I had maybe played two hours of one game, Pokemon Y. Fortunately I had purchased it used and managed to sell it without sustaining much of a loss. I truly wanted to be interested in handhelds again but the 3DS couldn't rekindle the flame that my Gameboy Color had once given me.

Whether or not you like handhelds is subjective. Disinterest or lack of certain features doesn't in itself make something stupid. Plenty of adults like them, no need to disparage that portion of the audience.

That's unfortunate that you lost your PSP. Get a couple of wired controllers and you can play Mario 64 on the PC.

At the time I always thought I'd regret spending $400 building a custom keyboard, but since building this board over 4 years ago it has pretty much been the only board I've used and it's actually saved me money in the long run from purchasing many other boards in search of perfect finger satisfaction. People laugh or stare (outside of GH of course) when I say I built my board for $400, but to me it has been a more than worthy purchase.

Lubed and stickered panda + ergo clear TKL with an internally stabilized aluminum case, hid, and some other stuff. There's pics on here somewhere, it's got a red case. It would actually be much cheaper (by about $100) to build these days, the mech board community has come a really long way in 4 years.

Sounds like a great board! And I agree, spending upwards of $400 on a keyboard sounds crazy at the time. But if you spread that $400 over the course of 5+ years with hundreds (even thousands) of hours of use each year, the cost seems much more reasonable.

That's a good idea, I have a ITX laying about that I haven't used. It's a AMD E-350 APU. Without a TV it's been sitting in a box, maybe I can shove it into a old 360 that I have around...

I used to be a PCMR scrub like you for two or three weeks, but then I saw the hypocrisy within the group towards Linux and left. But then again a wise person said "Linux is not PCMR because we're not limited to PC's" so maybe I wasn't PCMR in the first place.

Back to the topic, the backup mouse I'm using right now(NGS Evo Pro V2) is terrible. It sometimes freezes and I have to replug it, and the scroll wheel broke. Remember, even if you don't plan to use it too much, buy your mice from a good brand and don't just take the cheapest option because of the cost.

Oddly on the go i typically grab my pok3r and iPad mini for mobile use rather than my laptop.

wha....... what laptop do you have..

I have a few sitting around though i have not bothered to update in awhile since honestly nothing a laptop can do is something my tablet can't that i require. (With the tablet having the benefit of built in LTE) and since i always prefer using a mechanical keyboard it's more space conscious and less to carry doing so with a tablet than carrying a laptop and a mech board.

As of moment between my wife and i we have

Thinkpad R61i
Latitude D620
Latitude D430

And my wife has a Zenbook 13.3 (The cheaper blackish one with the intel Core M) that her job has provided her

None of these machines have been updated for a long long time (outside the zenbook since it's for work and we didn't buy it)

For one simple reason.

There is nothing i need to do on a laptop i can't do on my iPad mini with LTE using less space and being able to use my pok3r on the go at the same time.  My mobile computing usage basically consists of the following.

E-mail (Both work and personal)
General surfing
Ordering for work/looking at potential new products
Watching the occasional movie or TV show from my Remote media server or Netflix etc

None of this requires the use of a full laptop nor the bulk of one (even the 13.3 zenbook seems very bulky compared to an iPad mini and pok3r honestly) and the Battery life is great at that, plus since my wife uses an iPhone i can respond to her texts without even needing to take out my phone.

I have thought several times about buying a newer laptop for myself but simply put for my needs and usage i see little use to the investment and the one time we had bought slightly newer machines in 2009-2010 when my wife bought a MBP and i bought a newer ASUS (The exact model name is eluding me atm) we ended up selling them both off because nether of us really ever used them at all and they sat in their laptop bags collecting dust.  In fact i still have and use the STM bag we bought simply for carrying my Pok3r and iPad mini and misc other things now.

And when i'm at home i'd obviously rather use my desktop.

So anytime i ever consider looking at a newer laptop now i always stop and think to myself what can it do that *i* will actually use it for my tablet can not and i can't think of any single thing and just buy a newer tablet again instead.

You need to experience a newer 2.5ghz and above CPU + SSD on mobile.. It's way way way more responsive..

Ipads are quite sluggish, especially with adblocker turned on, and you can't block scripts with no script..

Ipads are quite sluggish, especially with adblocker turned on, and you can't block scripts with no script..

To be fair if you only spent 200$ on a tablet one could say the same about the tablet as that's fairly low end tablet at that price range a 200$ tablet is basically for watching movies.  And honestly it's nothing to do with the specs of the laptop my Desktop has an i5,16GB of DDR3 multiple SSD's and a GTX 970(So it;'s not that i haven't experienced newer specs i have i just find them wasted and useless in mobile form)...but away from home i don't DO anything that requires that sort of power at all it's simply a massive waste of money.  The iPads are in no way sluggish honestly for the tasks i mentioned above while maintaining good battery life and a small form factor.  There is simply nothing even a top of the line Zenbook can offer me that i need for my own mobile computing needs.  When i am home i can justify the horsepower since i do a lot of gaming.  On the go i only have needs that honestly a netbook with an ATOM processor could meet.....so why spend on an ultrabook what my iPad can do perfectly fine while at the same time allowing the use of a 60% mech using FAR less space than using it combined with an ultrabook?  It just sounds like a giant waste of money to me honestly.  I used to spend quite a bit on laptops back in the day and to their credit the ones i have after all this time still work well (Though have since been relegated to Torrent servers more or less).

I just simply can't name one SINGLE thing an ultrabook with an i7 and an SSD can do that *i* could make use of that my iPad can't do with my pok3r using a smaller size footprint and less overall bulk.  It just makes no sense to me to spend that sort of money on power that won't be used in anyway shape or form.  It sort of reminds me of my brother in law who bought an 1800$ laptop but all he does is surf facebook respond to E-mails and play browser games....talk about throwing away money without a single good reason.  I'm all about spending money in places i know i will get my moneys worth...Good keyboards, good desktop, good microphone etc.  But i'm also about being practical and spending that sort of money on a machine that really offers me no practical benefit just makes no sense to me personally.

Should my needs ever change i could see considering something with beefier specs but at moment it would literally just be throwing money away as every time i know i will just grab my tablet and a 60% mech instead.

You don't need a Ferrari if all you ever do is drive 2 miles a day to the grocery store.

$200 on an Android tablet should get you something pretty decent.

As for the notebook, this kind of falls in with what we discussed in the netbook love thread, some of us just prefer small laptops, but the netbooks were just too darn slow.  It just so happens that there was a bunch of 11.5in laptops made with Core I series processors (3rd gen seems the most common). Most lack the battery life of a tablet, but are half the weight of normal laptops (just over 2 pounds), and can run Windows like a champ, especially if you swap in an ssd and more ram (most can do 16gigs DDR3), something many of us have laying around at this point. The best part though is parts are cheap and they are easy to repair compared to a tablet.

I've seen the Lenovo models go for just over $100 (beware the Atom and AMD models), which is not only far below what a used Ultrabook goes for, it's less than it usually costs to have a tablet's screen repaired. Which is another reason I went this route, the idea of a laptop I can replace entirely for less (much less just parts) than repairing my other systems was quite attractive, especially when it could run anything I wanted short of games. They are a niche market so you won't find Ebay flooded with Core I models, but bang for the buck and size, they are fantastic little machines. If you do consider one, check the netbook thread, I listed various models, prices and pros/cons.

I'd have to disagree honestly with the 200$ remark, 200$ isn't quite budget entry level but it's really not even mid tier either.  Given that Android is less efficient and needs higher specs than iOS to achieve the same results at 200$ you either settle for a tablet with decent specs and poor build quality or lower specs and decent build quality...and LTE? Forget about it.

As far as repairing i have no need since i always get Applecare+ and can just drop the thing off (Not that i have ever needed to) and i upgrade every 2 years anyway.  Given Sprints 0% APR payment plan and i can pay as little as 5$ a month for data for a small amount or add more should i so choose as i need it....it's a no brainer for me.  I DO totally understand your love of smaller laptops though as even 13.3 ultrabooks feel bulky as hell to me and too much to lug around.  BUt for myself personally the iPad is a better fit and there is nothing a laptop can do i need the iPad can not, all the while having it insured with damage protection and being able to use a 60% mech board with a smaller form factor than ever a netbook provides.

True, with LTE the price does go up (by stupid amounts) and that's understandable about tablets if you prefer them. I just hate tablets, they're fine for walking while doing something, they're great for wireless network troubleshooting and such, but otherwise they are just terrible in my opinion.

To each their own and fair enough :p  But i keep my pok3r solely for use with my iPad, that's my one negative is the fact my HHKB's don't work with the iPad....ah well gives me an excuse to stay used to Cherry Blues :p

Why wouldn't the HHKB work with the iPad if you have the USB camera adapter to hook it up? Something special going on?

The USB hub which can't be disabled by dip switch on the HHKB draws too much power and thus the HHKB Pro 2 does not work while the Pok3r (non backlit) does.  The iPads are very hit and miss on which boards do and do not work with them due to power usage.

Razer Deathadder 2013 (x2)
Razer Deathadder Chroma

Seriously, I don't even know why I bothered after the first one. Back in the day (DA 3.5g and before) I loved the DA. I hate the finish on the 2013 and newer models. It's really slippery and the rubber side grips aren't big enough to make up for the lack of grip. Also, the right click went bad on all three of them within a few months.

Logitech makes the best mass-produced mouses (yes, "mouses") these days. Been using three for the past 15 years with no issues, and they're still kicking.

Logitech QC is great and should you have an issue their support is second to none perhaps only tied with Corsair....my one issue however is their ergonomics need A LOT of tooling.  Among their current generation of mice i only find the G602 comfortable and it's far too heavy.  The g303/g502 etc just feel extremely uncomfortable IMO for extended use.  That said my G602 has seen a ton of travel...a ton of usage and still works like it was new...i just wish they were more comfortable and in the G602's case lighter.

Still, although #g502masterrace, I went to the shop today and that mouse felt really crappy. Trust-crappy. May be the model but... I really think they are overhyped. Go to amazon.com and read reviews, there are many issues with logitech mice. YMMV of course.

There will always be lemons, but when I get three **** DA's in a row that's a pretty bad sign, or I'm just very unlucky. Seems like Razer has always had bad QC from what I've read on other forums, but people also like to hate on Razer more than anyone else because of their marketing hype and styling. I use a Diamondback as my daily but I've only had it for a couple weeks now, so we'll see how long it lasts.

I would agree that Logitech makes the most reliable mouses (and maybe Corsair, like you mentioned). Of course, no technology is perfect. Unfortunately, neither of them make a mouse that I can stand the shape of (except the G602, but that only comes in wireless so that's a no-go).

True, that is also REALLY bad. I had it once with motherboards... It was a gigabyte with bad condensers. They just couldn't do it right.

Yeah, they should make a slightly larger G502. It's weird... G502 looks like is for palm grip, but it is better for claw but then pinky goes nowhere. I cannot figure out how I am supposed to hold teh G502. But that one is probably on me.

Isn't that how you're supposed to type? The rests are just there for when you're not typing.

I rest my wrists while gaming. I don't game very often but I guess that would be a benefit to some that game often--if they rest their wrists while gaming

i dont own wrist rests of my own, but i've used a friend's one whilst playing osu, makes a big difference for me while gaming (osu). not sure how much benefit there is for typing though, might be comfortable for others
