Gat Greens. I have loose Gat Green switches sitting on my desk and I love to click them all the time. Need to get around to making a keyboard with them though...

Matias Quiet Click and Matias Quiet Linear. Matias Click may feel too similar to White ALPS for you, though they are notably lighter than Blue and White ALPS.

Also, is the difference between the Model F and the Model M significant? I love typing on my M and wonder if it would be worth it to buy a Model F.

Everything on your list is >1980. Keyswitches from the 70s are much more fun.

I want to try vintage green alps and 'space invaders'. However, I have no idea how to use either of those switch types with a modern computer. But that's just me

I hear that Topre is best. I've yet to confirm this theory

A nice clean hall effect keyboard is the best linear switch out there in my opinion.

Tbh it depends a bit on what kind of switches you might want to try to begin with. Are you merely looking for the best switch out there, or do you want to try all sorts of interesting switches for the fun of it?

Tried and liked:
Model F switches - amazing clicky switch

I was going to recommend beamspring because I think it would blow your mind, but like any other very vintage board they take a particular person. You have to be okay with a typewriter-like profile and the available layouts, paying $40+ for shipping, and finding the right one for a decent price.

I need more time on mine to decide, but I think a 3XXX metal-case beamspring would absolutely destroy my 4704 Model F. My 5251 with a plastic top case probably does too, but I'm a goddamned sucker for metal cases.

Tried and liked:
mx blacks (vintage) - 62g are my favorite

I like my Hall Effect quite a bit but off-center keypresses are brutal and they're not readily convertible to modern computers. I'm with you on 62g vintage MX Blacks, think they're still my ideal linear. You could try SKCL Greens, they're very nice but if you didn't like the actuation point of SKCM Blues I'm not sure I'd bother.

SMK switches (https://deskthority.net/wiki/SMK_second_generation). The blue clicky with Alps mount ("Monterey") is the most common, and very well liked - a great clicky switch.

try?

try throwing everything not topre in the trash.

is that the secret to making a "great" switch? Because I'm pretty sure the trash is where topre comes from.

on topic: hall effect :D monterey blue alps

You need a Model F in your life. Topre is good but metal is better.

There have been long flame-wars about what should be called "mechanical" and what should not. Better to let sleeping dogs lay ... ;)

I bet they feel mushy.
I have not seen any really good review yet, but from what I have heard they should feel a lot like regular linear mechanical switches, such as Cherry MX.
That is plunger and a spring and no bumps, after all.

Oki Gourd switches. I have a couple of keyboards with the clicky variant and it's amazing (and I don't even like clicky switches otherwise).

Holy moley these sound nice!

Youtube Video Description:
Quote
Is Oki Electric made of a membrane keyboard.
It becomes to the configuration of the coil spring + rubber dome, press the key when the spring is pressed, it will be entered in.
The structure is similar to the Model M, but this is a different structure because it does not buckling.

Yeah Okis are pretty cool guys, I can't get enough of that funky spring shape xD . Does anyone have ANY idea why they called it a GOURD spring?!

Also, the description is wrong; there is no rubber dome in Oki gourd spring.

It's because of the spring shape, as proposed by mousefan.

does anyone like the space invader switches?
Yeah, they're pretty cool guys :) . A tad heavy, but quite nice. The clicky sound is unique, it's related to MX blue but not annoying. Not as good as blue Alps or a Model F in my opinion, though.
