Title: Share some nostalgia. What is your nostalgia like?
Post by: iLLucionist on Fri, 08 April 2016, 14:49:29
Once in a while I go back memory lane and think about the great days I had with OS'es (dos, win 3.1), apps (ms word 5.0, wordperfect 5.2, visual basic 2.0), games (wolfenstein 3d, doom 2, quake 1, commander keen, crystal cave, etc.), and hardware (original ibm pc, voodoo graphics), etc.

I'm curious what your nostalgia looks like. Any particular fond or warm memories for a particular OS, game, app, computer, expansion cards? Typical failures that became part of your nostalgia like win95 constantly BSOD'ing?

As far as games go, mid to late 90's is where it's all at for me. Oh, and Runescape 2001-2004 (all my fond memories are pre-RS2 sorry bois)

DOS Version of C&C (and, to a lesser extent, RA1). Crusader No Remorse... Vivid memories of playing that on our old 486 around the time The Prodigy's "The Fat of the Land" just came out (so 1997).. Diesel Power on louder than it should be, but it's okay, been a fan of Kool Keith ever since.

I think what I get nostalgic over is pretty typical for a mid 20's guy these days who was very into games back then. Just that I was as into console gaming as I was PC gaming.

Now I'm washed up aaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Yeah 90's... I'm 27 so all the good stuff happened in the 90's. I became "aware" of my life when I was about 3... was playing commander keen, wolfenstein 3d, crystal cave etc.

When I was around 8-9 I started with doom, doom 2, quake 1, quake 2, and of course command and conquer in dos. That interlaced mode was awesome... made it more like a secret service thing. I played it to death. Over and over again. Skirmish. It was good. Have you also played Dune?

I'm really young compared to most on the forum, the first game I ever played makes me really nostalgic.

I remember getting stuck on this one level because I was so young.

I think I ended up playing this game when I was around 8, and the game came out when I was like 3

Launch day NES Action Set. That was a monstrous day for me and my brother. Bonus was our dad hooked it up to the home stereo system and we were really jamming out to the SMB music and the blasts on Duck Hunt.

I still have it here and working well. Well enough that I don't have to do any tricks, just throw a game in and it works.

I also have a dozen or two of the old Nintendo Power mags featuring walk throughs of games like Star Tropics and Metroid. Such awesome stuff to go back through. New games, hints, tips, secrets, codes, etc... man. Might go jump in a couple right now.

I once got a picture of what looked like stars and re skinned that thing to try and make it look like random traveling through space. It worked pretty well. At the time I thought it was amazing and I was some kind of genious. Also I'm going to leave that there as it was not a typo.

When learning to walk I got to see one of the first times my niece walked on her own. My brother said to her, "Alright! Did you just walk all by yourself?!" and her response was she threw her arms up and while laughing and screaming did that goofy little high speed toddler stomp.

Sometimes I wish that were an acceptable response to some things at work or otherwise in adult life.

I feel you. That's why I still try to do silly things and be reasonably irresponsible at certain times.. To keep the kid in me kicking. I am still wondering why children try to be adults so hard. It isn't fun being a grown up.

Is it nostalgia if you never really stopped doing it? Some things that may be nostalgic to an outsider might be considered the norm to others.

People might call the NES nostalgic, but suppose you've actually been playing it for the past 25 years.

It was amazing, it had such great graphics and gameplay! At the time I didn't understand English well enough to get the difficulty settings, so I never knew why some games were much harder than others :P . The mummy in the caves made me jump, but I knew all the levels by heart xD .

I still play Doom as Brutal Doom. Some of the others I give a spin once every blue moon, too.

Good question. For me, nostalgia are things I have warm memories of but that lay further down the past. Like windows 3.1, dos, doom.

But yes, I'm still playing games, computers, keyboards, etc.

Games-wise, it's like enjoying the mere fact remakes of old games are being made, even if I don't play them for want of time and attention span — but it still feels good to know the option is there, did I ever want to use it.

In other areas of life, well, I had a strange dream tonight of someone I was briefly seeing in early 2010… like 7 times over 2 months and still somehow made a profound impression on me. Catch myself looking at a picture of her every now and then, though she isn't the only one. I have a soft spot for those of them I really liked but the reality of a relationship didn't manage to kick in and disabuse me of silly notions.

What else? Turning 33 in 10 days and not taking it well at all. It feels like I was 25 yesterday, or at least last week. I feel robbed of the years.

I'm 27 and I'm wondering "wtf happened since I was 16 enjoying life without too much worries besides homework obligations and cs 1.6 / bf nights".

W T F IS going on? My "career" starts when I'm around 30, when I have my PhD. The f**k.

Aw man, there's so many games I NEED to have remade properly. For example, the entire Bullfrog catalog! :D

These Mac OS images looked gorgeous black-and-white on printed paper in manuals.

Nostalgia = actually getting a printed manual in the box with the software.

Before they moved to providing an electronic copy on the enclosed CD.

Before they moved to just providing a link to download it.

And cover disks.

Remember cover disks?

Before the internet it was a great way of getting software, usually shareware.

After the internet you usually found out what was on the cover disk, then went online to download a newer version anyway :))

Quake was such an amazing game! Practically Lovecraft in a video game, I always regretted that Id didn't keep using the Lovecraft theme for further games. And of course, that kickass soundtrack by Trent Reznor - I hadn't been affected by a game soundtrack as much as that before, I think.

I loaded the first Commander Keen game into DOSBox right after I saw that picture haha. I don't know which game is harder, DN1 is pretty intense. Funny how Apogee used the same DN1 graphic effects and audio samples for Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure. I guess that game was Apogee's PG version or something

Keen 1 was pretty doable, 2 was quite hard, 3 was ridiculous xD . DN1 was somewhat challenging but not too hard if you took it easy, I think. DN2 was much harder as I recall, especially beyond episode 1/2.

Some old games that stand out in my memory as being particularly hard are Rockford (never got beyond level 2 in episode 1, and never completed ANY levels in any of the other episodes iirc), Gauntlet (they spawned so fast, I couldn't keep up!), Star Goose (all I remember is the rocket launchers got me EVERY TIME), International Ninja Rabbits (which was just ridiculous), Pyro 2 (always blew myself up), Paratrooper (it was so hard to get that bomb angle just right!), Skyroads (past the fist half or so of the levels it got really bat**** insane), and Arkanoid (the original - I never could get more than a few levels in).

Oh my god so many good ones. Total nostalgia trip for me there.

Nostalgia to me was back when I was living at my parents house, not working and not studying, I just sat at home with my buddy, carefree, and played videogames all day long.
We've both got baes and jobs now so there is no more of that.
Also video games don't hold the same appeal as they once did, I guess I'm just getting older.
I'd much rather mess around with Linux and build server/keyboards these days. The worst thing is I still purchase games, library is almost at 250 on steam.

Ah NWN - the hours I've poured into that.

NWN2 never really grabbed me.

I tried a couple of others, including Torchlight, but they didn't feel enough like NWN and I never got in to them.

Now I want to play NWN again ... if only I had the time ...

I remember Encarta 95 on my first own Compaq PC. Apart from Windows 95 constantly crashing. Encarta was so cool. The opening music, videos, graphics. The flat user interface opposed to the extreme 3D look of Office 95 at the time (with the gradient title bar). Best experience ever on a brand new pc.

Age of Empires I and II, Goldeneye, and Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction all come to mind as nostalgic things from middle school to high school.

I actually played so much Age of Empires II while listening to a couple different CDs that hearing those albums now actually recalls sounds from the game, weird how that works.  I guess D2 is kind of the same way, as hundreds of hours were spent doing Andy, Meph, and Baal runs (TACO BAAL 12), trading and trying not to get scammed, dueling with randoms and friends until some douche brought in their FOH Paly, and then the sadness me and my friends felt when Mousepad ceased support for his maphack.  RIP Mousepad you were the best :(

Luigi whatever, as far as games are concerned, can't recall the exact name. That was awesome graphics, but when graphical designers knew how to draw.

Otherwise I like interacting with venerable hardware that wasn't mine, especially formerly high-end models, so for example I'm more inclined to buy an old but powerful and majestic GFX card second-hand than get a modern mid-shelf product NIB.

I often sink into nostalgia these days because the world just isn't my kind of place any more. Once upon a time, being a translator by trade, I got to translate Eric Zimmerman's Manifesto of a Ludic Century, and I focused not on the ludic aspects of it but more the game-theory stuff. My conclusion is that lives are no longer just lived, things are no longer just done. People manage and maximize everything. There is no more spontaneity or naturalness. Every last Joe Average is a celebrity on Facebook with a managed image. Every company is trying to game or hack the system — tax, labour laws, whatever.

For example companies put people on task-based schedules to avoid restrictions on work hours per week. Everybody knows the taskloads are not selected so as to fit within a standard work day or week. Or companies that first sell or donate their trademarks to a parent or child on the Bahamas and subsequently pay 'royalties' and 'licence fees' to the effect of 50% of the end price. Or people trying to register something to the tune of Spaghetti Monster as a religion and expect to be treated on par with Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and so on. Or judges making things up as they go and hacking the law when they want to make a change Parliament is more properly suited for making. That kind of word of absurdities is no longer my word, so I end up living in the past. For example, I have a small collection of criminal-law course books from just after WW2 (my previous job), which are so much more lucid and erudite and still easily, simply comprehensible than stuff modern law professors and judges write. So yeah, old law books. My record is 3 bucks for a true gem that's no longer really available and was written by my professor's professor's professor — a brilliant scholar who gained a lot of respect but somehow failed to make a recognizable name outside of a narrow group of specialists. They don't make law professors like that any more. Dude was positively brilliant without having the advantage of just simply being a 170 IQ genius. It was basically legal mind well formed and properly bred, and that just doesn't happen any more these days.

The graphics mod is called DarkPlaces. There are even high res textures out there. I'm still tinkering with it.

I'm also fooling around with Quake 2 and have discovered that there is quite the multi-player following for these games still. Check out tastyspleen for servers and mod stuff

Pretty.

Now you've made me want to play Q1 again.

After playing Wolfenstein 3D and Doom for so long, the first time I played Q1 it was so great to shoot something, then circle around their body on the ground and NOT have it spin on the spot like a 2D sprite.

The graphics mod is called DarkPlaces. There are even high res textures out there. I'm still tinkering with it.

I'm also fooling around with Quake 2 and have discovered that there is quite the multi-player following for these games still. Check out tastyspleen for servers and mod stuff

I was able to play through Quake 1 with the Darkplaces Quake engine on my Windows 10 computer ;D

I'll have to check those servers out, that could be fun thank you

Sweet

Yep, I first played Quake during the summer of 1998. The summer before my freshman year of high school so I remember it well. First WASD, first FPS, and the keyboard I used was a model M. Anyways, maybe I should check out the old level editing tools :D

I love using my Six Shooter to play Quake games:

MK now has them available in kits with a signature White PCB (without case for now):

Still working it out, but I use the left top key to jump,  top middle and all three bottom keys are arrows. Top right key is crouch. I'm still 'sperimentin' but this is the layout I used last night

Oh alright, I was kind of thinking it might work for WASD and jump. I would have a tough time adjusting to that layout. Wait, crouch? Are we still talking about Quake 1? Anyway, sounds cool

Strangely I have an older DarkPlaces version from 2009.  It's been at least that long, probably longer, since I last played it.

I've played through Q2 (and both expansion packs) more recently.

When I first got here, they were such  prominent figures of GH community.  It was pretty intimidating just to have conversation with them since they've been here years before me (some of them since the beginning of Geek Hack) and also know tons of stuff regarding mechanical keyboards.

Ripster wasn't that bad in the beginning but he went sort of nuts toward the end before his infamous ban but he is very knowledgeable, you'll have to give him that.  Also there was Wellington1869 who everyone told me was crazy and was banned long before I got here (iMav can probably tell you that story).  And also the fallout between iMav and webwit, whom went on to create Deskthority.net.  Didjamatic has his own website 5K177 which he used to sell various keyboards including the GHSS.

A few other members that I missed are Ashort and Input Nirvana (sorry guys).  Everyone was cool as hell when I first joined.  It was fun to watch them banter back and forth about keyboards and stuff (and ripster posting his Legos).  Some members were very passionate about the subject of keyboards and it was rare to see at that time (who would've thought there was a forum dedecated to only keyboards discussion!).

Don't quote me on this since I could be wrong because only iMav and webwit can tell you the reason.  I heard that they had different ideas about the direction Geekhack was heading at the time.  There were some bad feelings in the beginning but it's been years and Deskthority has blossomed into a full blown keyboard community of choice for European members.

Mechwarrior for the win. Surely that was on 486DX, because I don't think the SX model processors could handle polygons

No judgements here. I don't judge you or your friends and I hope the best for you all and I hope it all goes well. I am simply providing some wisdom having gone through something similar when I was young and naive. You are just starting in life, so just be careful. That's all.  :thumb:

they all have jobs they are waiting on me to get one for us to move in, we agreed no one will not have a job, i also like how you're judging people you never met, we all have pretty ignorant parents that we wanna get away from, my mom was quite a druggy and shes a little messed in the head and my dad is a hard worker and doesnt have much time to interact but hes cool, but hes also very ignorant to what i want to do with my life

No judgements here. I don't judge you or your friends and I hope the best for you all and I hope it all goes well. I am simply providing some wisdom having gone through something similar when I was young and naive. You are just starting in life, so just be careful. That's all.  :thumb:
I chose my friends wisely weve been friends since before school and are very serious about what we wanna do

Then I say,  Party on, Wayne!  :p

I moved in with some friends directly after highschool. It worked; moving in with friends is not always bad :thumb:

Party on, Garth!  :))

You must have had a really bad time when you moved in with friends huh? I spent a lot of my time at my full-time job; going to college directly after high school wasn't an option for me. We were a bunch of geeks anyway. I went to one real party back then and that was in Waterloo Canada :))

being a dumb child i found holidays so damn happy christmas, easter, all of them super awesome, going to the dollar store with my dad to get a cap gun and pretending im a cowboy, now im a miserable teenager who just wants to move into my own household with my friends.

Just wait till your "friends" decide to screw you over with rent and utilities. Dear ole' dad might not seem so bad then.

Nah. I am completely sincere with nostalgic references to Wayne's World as friends sharing lives. I got burned, yes. But I am just bringing a since of caution to the table. Sometimes the people we think are friends or even spouses can become moochers. It's all good.  :thumb:

I get it. Six years after high school I helped support a friend's friend while she slept on the couch. She was pregnant so it wasn't like we could just kick her out of the apartment :-[ Garth is a much better drummer than I am :))

As a hats off to GH nostalgia... man what a crazy ride!

It's hard to believe its been 7 years for me, overall.

Passage of time... interesting.

Very happy to have made tight friends here (which still to this day boggles my bean).
