87u 55g or 45g?
-
Not even a contest if you're going with a realforce over HHKB. 55g.
-
55g topre is godly

55g Jonny Boy...
If it's a little heavy at first just stick with it for a bit while you put your fingers through training camp. Your hands will be stronger and you're health will improve all around. Best part is that you'll be able to make fun of people who still use MX.

HHKB!
But if it's really gotta be an 87u then 55g.
I must say that I'm not a huge fan of any topre switch I've tried while stock. However, when lubed and silenced, 45g HHKB and 55g RF are both some of the best I've tried. I do think HHKB feels nicer than RF though.

This thread also helped me pick mine.
I wanted it in beige anyway, and the 45g never seems to come in beige.

i'm actually about to trade my 55g domes from my beige RF87U for 45g's because i couldn't find a 45g model
i've been told i'm a fool for doing so

+1 for 55g - that's what I'd choose!

Good choice. Like others said, when you are ready to try 45g you are definitely best off getting a HHKB. Be nice to have both.

It's all preference and mine is variable weighted. I don't like 55g Topre.

What is variable weighted mean? Different keys are different weights or?

Yes, depending upon location and which finger and reach is suggested.

Yes. The keys under your weakest fingers (eg. pinky) require less force. It's supposed to be an advantage for touch typists(which I'm not), though I really can't tell any difference when typing. All in all, variable weighted feels lighter than 45g(even though some keys are 45g).

+1 here. I still own both and prefer the variable to the 55g. The 55g is still better than any MX board I've owned / tried, but a bit too stiff for my typing style.

Variable weight Topre has 35, 45 and 55g keys. Most are 45, I think Esc and functions are 55g. I like the 45g ones the best.
What I don't like about Realforces is that they have a top lip that adds approximately one row worth of size to the keyboard and the color options are simply oldschool greyish white and black with nearly unreadable labels. HHKB doesn't have enough keys to have a nice set of arrows in the bottom corner like you can get on a Pok3r or fully programmable keyboards. As much as I love Topre switches, I don't really like the keyboard options on the market that much. The closest I like is probably the Leopold FC660C, but even that could use just a few more keys and a fully programmable controller like you can get on the HHKB.

weird that they didn't make windows keys heavier as to not accidentally hit them.

Not sure why that would matter unless you're gaming. In any case, the 87U has dip switches on the back that can disable the Windows key if need be.

Out of the box the 55g's were somekind of too heavy for me...wasn't really impressed. After cleaning&lubing (which I describe as becoming as one with the cup rubber) now she's the board I've expected her to be in the first place...smooth, snappy thocking artillery! :thumb:
