Title: Any skateboarders here?
Post by: LunarisDream on Thu, 28 April 2016, 00:38:16
I'm in China and saw a pretty girl pass by me today on the way to class on a skateboard. She was handling it really well and I think it would be a good and cheap alternative to biking (since bicycles get stolen all the time).

Anybody use a skateboard here?

It'd be way too hot for that in China... maybe not yet.. but soon.

I haven't skateboarded since I was a teen. I never used it commuting, just cruising around. I saw someone go by on a longboard that was motorized, appeared to have a little control device in one hand. I'd guess he was going 15mph.
Edit: ~24kmh

You'll go through a lot of shoes from foot braking. I commuted with longboards and shortboards for years. If you think you'll have fun go for it. Fastest I've gone on a skateboard is 35-40 mph (56-64 kpm). Florida's hills are pretty tame, depending on where you're at you might go through shoes faster.

When I say commuted I meant to work, to buy groceries, etc. Skating is fun but it made me sweat like crazy, so much so that I had to change all my clothes before clocking into work haha

I use a skateboard, cruiser & longboard depending on the situation.
I'm guessing you'll be using one just for travel & not tricks?

If so & if you're buying the parts separately get softer wheels like 75A-85A durometer.
They'll absorb more vibrations, grip the ground better & have a smoother ride overall.
Bones Redz bearings are a fast & affordable choice.
Board size/shape & truck width is up to you really.

The Crailtap Couch Cruiser is a great pre built one, smaller trucks & board so it's fairly light compared to regular boards.

Not sure how the options are in China tho :p

Just don't get a lame Penny board :))

Oldschool skateboards (the ones with the fishtail) are longboards by today's standards

I recently started skating again (last summer). I'm basically just cruising my neighborhood (pretty freshly paved) on some 55mm hard wheels and trying to relearn some old tricks from 20 years ago.

As was mentioned above, if you are just using it as a means of transportation, you'd better get a wide board, some tall trucks (perhaps w/ risers), and some very large and soft wheels.

I skateboarded off and on for probably 15 years. I still have a board today and can still do a few basic tricks, but I definitely don't skate like I used to. I also used to race longboards, and commute across campus in college on one.

Couple shots from a warm up run. Those were probably at 40 or so mph. Anything much faster than that and I had custom motorcycle leathers. Went as fast as 60 mph, which is only slightly terrifying.  :))

Long boarding is the way to go for commuting.  I ride street and I longboard and trying to commute on a street deck with 52 mm wheels will rattle your nuts off.  I suggest a 33"-40" board with at least 1 kick, traditional kingpin trucks and 65mm-70mm wheels 80a duro.  If you aren't going up and down curbs n ****, you don't need kicks.  In that case, go for a 36"-41" drop deck with either traditional or reversed kingpin trucks and 70mm wheels 75a-80a duro.  If you'd to do some research, google silverfish longbaording and join the forum.

Would something like this (https://detail.tmall.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.6.1uTEYc&id=43629789724&cm_id=140105335569ed55e27b&abbucket=14&skuId=76950290439) do? I'm not planning on doing any tricks; just kinda wanna try it out for going to/from class and the store, which would normally take me 15-30 mins of walking.

The wheels for that are 52mm and 95A, and I think I'm going to get 70mm 78A to swap on there. Would that be fine?

Yeah. And those look to be some pretty tall ****ing risers ahahah. I can't read that site, though. Does it say something along the lines of converting a regular street deck to a cruiser? Seems like that is what the kit is for based upon pics.

If you travel mainly used to glide slide, or poor road conditions are not suitable glide, then you will need a set of road wheels to improve the quality of taxi.

It says that these are "commute/road wheels", more suitable for using a skateboard/longboard to travel long distances or on the street rather than to perform tricks.

Do you think it would be tall enough for the board I'm looking at?   :)

Just forget about skating there are better way to meet girls. Here in southern california Skating is a culture. If you skate you are automatically labeled as a skater. Usually meaning a person who uses it to travel in small groups to perform tricks. If you want to avoid that label you need to be generic and buy either a Long-Board or Penny-Board. I should mention that skating is difficult and you are 100% to eat it no matter what. It will take over a 5 months before you are able to maneuver with ease

Just forget about skating there are better way to meet girls. Here in southern california Skating is a culture. If you skate you are automatically labeled as a skater. Usually meaning a person who uses it to travel in small groups to perform tricks. If you want to avoid that label you need to be generic and buy either a Long-Board or Penny-Board

Not interested in meeting girls (or guys). Just want a faster mode of transport between classes. Bicycles get stoled too often around these parts, and chain-cutting is rampant.

I think a longboard is what I'm looking for, but there are a bunch of specifications that are jargon to me. Been browsing through some guides and still have a tough time figuring out what type of longboard I want. Sounds like I need larger, soft wheels.

Skated for probably 10 years when I was younger. I miss it a lot, still watch videos from time to time.

I swear Dgneo is me in another body. same music, same skate vids. I need a realforce 55

I used to skateboard for a while, but busted my ankles and knees to much to keep doing. Longboarding is fine still though.

That's because dg is dope with dope tastes

Also, in case anyone didn't see, Jaws did the 25 Step that Ali Boulala had tried a long while back.

You can go with 65mm on a double kick, easily, you just need some risers.
I have a bunch of re-issues and some newer double kicks, they all have rainskates in 65mm in different duros (95a, 97A, and 100A) or they have Slime Balls Big Balls in 97A
Here's the double kicks I use:

http://www.bustinboards.com/yoface-35-limited-edition
http://www.rayne.com/product/catalyst/ (you can get it much cheaper elsewhere)

My two cents: Don't waste your money on swiss bearings. You won't notice the difference unless you're an extreme speed skater. You're better off buying some Zealous, Bones Reds or Rockn Ron's.

How about those motorized unicycle? Have seen those around and they seems to serve their purpose and also not being to bulky. Or yeah just a foldable scooter as what had been mentioned.

As for skateboards, I love it so much I won't recommend it if you're just gonna use it to travel.

Bones reds all day.  Swiss may faster out of the box, but the advantage isn't noticeable after like a month.  Only people that should be using swiss or ceramics are racers who use them once and throw them away.

If you throw 70mm on that board you are gonna get wheel bite from hell when you turn at all. MAY work with risers.

D: These wheels (https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.1997525049.9.GG6wx9&id=522228146559) I'm looking at say they come with two 8mm "thick pads", rectangular blocks with two circles inside. Are these risers?

I highly recommend that you don't buy one of those.
None of the skaters in the video on the item page are related to it & would probably be comparable to a Walmart board if that $20 price tag is correct.

Might as well walk or you'll start to dislike skateboarding riding one of those :p

Wow, a Berrics video. Some of the highest paid skateboarders in the world skate there. That is really weird that they're featuring a shortboard video for longboard wheels

 :-X

So much wrong with this statement.

Bones Swiss (especially bones labrynth) are much faster, with superior grade steel that lasts years longer then reds. Reds are fine for the average joe, dont get me wrong ... but you wont see many pros of any skate genre rocking **** that will loose speed in the transition (****ty bearings). Worth every penny for the nicer bearings. I make this statement with 16+ years experience under my belt.

Yep most pros skate ceramics or super swiss six. You can hide what bearings you put into your wheels so it wouldn't really matter unless they're on tour with the bearing company (even then they'd probably still ride the same bearing lol). Reds are too slow for me tbh, but that's because Florida is flat

Some dude a few posts up recommended Zealous bearings, those are one of my favorites over Reds for sure (and cheeper)

Zealous is legit.

I've skated for 23 years man. 1v1 me in skate and watch me lose. Pros want the fastest bearings in existence period. I guess you've never heard of swiss super six bearings but it's ok, none of us are perfect :thumb:

You're being ridiculous. Heat = Friction, Less heat = less friction. Super Swiss Six = less surface area, which means less friction. What is your proof?

Skateboarding is not one of those activities where the people express their true opinions on camera.

If you don't ride swiss you're an idoit.

j/k but for real, reds are nice for the price but they will never last as long as swiss. I ran a skateshop for 4 years and we sold thousands of reds but I also replaced about half of them too.
so it comes down to the buy once cry once ****.
