Title: Built my first custom
Post by: Porkins on Thu, 28 April 2016, 21:53:02
My wife has been asking for a keyboard so I decided that instead of buying her one, I would see how difficult building one was.

It wasn't as hard as I thought, but I just did the basics and decided against trying leds on my first build.

Parts consisted of:

A KC60 PCB
Cherry reds
and a universal plate.

All purchased in a DIY kit from mechboards.co.uk.

Sorry for not posting a full build log. It was my first time soldering and my solder joints looked terrible and were not worthy of pictures.

Now I am waiting on my custom cut poly plate to come in and I am going to build myself one.

PS the Q has already been flipped to be right side up.

Looks good man! I'm sure she will be happy receiving it. It gives a lot more meaning considering that YOU built it. Kudos to you! :D

How much does the total process costed you? I am about to build my very first 60% keyboard from scratch. Not used with soldering too
so I am a bit nervous of messing up lol.

Nice choice of Cherry MX Reds. Buttery smooth if you lube it just right. :)

It cost me around 130 USD for all the keyboard parts. I also had to buy all of the soldering equipment, which was much more than the board.

All in all I think I didn't like 300 USD. I am currently waiting on a second set of parts to come in top build myself a custom.

As far as the soldering concern, I wouldn't be to intimidated. It was not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be. Just take your time and be patient and you'll get the hang of it quick enough.

Nicely done, Porkins.

Your Q key is on its side, and your Z, X, and S keys are upside down.  /OCD

What do you have mapped to that bright red 1.5u key?

I flipped them. I put it together with my glasses off and didn't even catch that they in the wrong orientation.

The red blank is the backspace key and the down arrow is the \ | key.

Man that's amazing! Unfortunately my wife doesn't use a PC so I will never get to build her a custom mech. Which disapoints me deeply.
You're a good husband for doing that for your wife, I am sure she will appreciate it!
