Title: Having so much trouble deciding: 87u or 103u?
Post by: watduzhkstand4 on Sat, 19 December 2009, 15:28:21
I have the Blank White HHKB Pro 2. I have the blank Filco Cherry Blue Tenkeyless. I also have the cherry blue keypad. I want to get a Realforce board because it seems to be a more solid build with the metal back plate but I don't know which one to get. Space is not a problem with the 103u. I like to have a keyboard with a num pad but it looks sexier without one.

Please throw in your two cent. I will take any thoughts and then make my decision.

I've heard at least one person say that their 103U wasn't quite as rock solid compared with their 87U. On the flipside, if you want one with a numpad, get it. It's cheaper too!

Is that why the 87u is so much more expensive than the 103u? the reason why I like the realforce keyboards is because I've listened to so many audio clips and watched so many youtube videos on it and it definitely doesn't sound as plastic and fragile than the HHKB Pro 2. I like the way the keys sound with the realforce boards. Correct me if I'm hearing something wrong =D

pretty sure the 87u is only more expensive due to demand.  if the 103u truly is flimsier, it is probably because it is the same thickness materials etc just shorter (just a guess here though).

I think AndrewZorn perfectly summed up what I was about to otherwise say =P

Oh, it makes little sense to me either. Im convinced it's a psychological impact from having the thing spread out more but not necessarily being that much heavier. I find density has quite an impact on how you perceive quality - a Filco Tenkeyless and a Dell AT101W are around the same weight, but the Filco feels heavier to me because of the weight concentration.

yeah, density too.  there are 'base' weights to the board, like the controller.
i was just thinking about the comparative flimsiness between a 2ft long 2x4 and a 4ft long 2x4.

I think it might feel flimsier because of the sound it is producing maybe? The 103u is longer and the sounds that it makes from that back plate might be a little bit different comparing to the 87u. Maybe in reality it just sounds flimsier but not really a flimsier build. I still don't know which one to get though lol.

I have both the 103u and the 87u and there is no difference in quality, they are both rock solid.  It comes down to whether you want to save money and get a keypad or spend more and not have one.... oh and right now it depends which color you want.

My 87u seems slightly stiffer but it's brand new.  That is the only difference I can speak to after owning both.

Let me take the opportunity to once again say how lame it is that Topre/Realforce won't allow Elite to ask them to include a handful of white 87u's in an order of blacks.  On a scale of 1-10 that = stupid.  I'd really like a white 87u but Elite won't do a full order of whites.

Wrong guy.  You're supposed to convince RD of that.  Give his poor wife a heart attack.

That would be no fun. He is already convinced. :-)

Not until he's ordering another batch from Japan. At the moment, I think you have to wait 2 moths or so for the next one.

yep. I guess I'll take the 103u. I like the 103u because I just realized I don't have a standard size keyboard in the house! =X I would like to have something that's normal lol. Just a quick question ch_123, how do you post to sell things in the classified section? I tried so many times and it won't let me. Thanks!
