I have black, white, grey, red, orange, blue, and green ethernet cables. Orange is definitely faster. The grey one is the least reliable since the clips fell off of both ends, so I'd stay away from that.

Red light waves are faster. That's not always true, by the way. That said, everyone knows red means speedy ^^ .
What are u guysus Opinion on 3 piece vs 2 piece RJ45 connectors..??Go for gold-plated sleeve to get the squarest bits ... and the most winning.
You don't need Cat 6 or fancy connectors, just use Cat 5e and save yourself some money. Unless you're doing a large building, Cat 5e is perfectly fine for Gbe.
As for covers. Nope, nope, nope. Those f-ing boots harden over time. Many times I have to cut them off just to remove the cable from the router/switch. I've broken a few locking tabs because of those damn things. I would use them on a mission critical system where idiot techs could bump them, but otherwise, nope.
In a home, you should be able to figure out where things go using a common sense approach. Server first, you, spouse, first kid, second kid. Or go by distance. If you have too many for that, you should invest in a patch panel. Not only will it make labeling easier (numbers and charts for the win), but also cleans up the rats nest. The removal of which will also increase speeds.
