Title: new model m =]
Post by: Santa on Fri, 25 December 2009, 01:09:19
so i just got my model m today in the mail and so far so good. I really like the sounds and the feel to it, but the only thing bothering me is the sound that the spacebar makes compared to the actual keys. I guess it is good because sometimes i type spaces in the wrong position. This thing is way heavier than I expected. Also, the font seems kind of strange.
Right now not much of a noticeable difference in typing speed but hopefully after I break it in I will speed up.

They are lovely keyboards. I used my '89 for over 15 years. Congrats.

Now you will have to resist the temptation to get yourself an M13. If it's any consolation when you buy one, I failed dismally at this too. The trouble is now that I want a Black Lian-Li or Silverstone (Antec? Maybe...) case to go with it. Oh, and a matt black monitor too...

Congrats on the M!

I'm sure you can get used to the Font.  It's Helvetica.  Although considered a bit old fashioned it is generally considered a Classic.  Like the Model M.

I always figured helvetica was more appropriate on a ALPS keyboard

merry christmas everyone!

Nope, I need full tower. Nice try though (not a bad case either, apart from the size). I currently run a Coolermaster STC-T01, and want something this size, or bigger (I run watercooling, with an AC pump, it all needs a house).

I am looking fairly hard at the Corsair Obsaidian, and maybe an Antec 1200. I would certainly prefer the 1200's size, even though it's bloody ugly.

Big sucker.  Lots of water cooling room. Not a full tower though.

Nice, but I meant the Antec 1200.

I really don't like the looks. The size is perfect though, as the Eheim 1250 I use takes up a silly amount of room.

A case lasts me a while (take my STC-T01 I'm using now. Nothing wrong with it, I just fancy a change. I would take the black version in a heartbeat, if I could find it).

That Lian Li looks a bit like an electric bar heater with those neons in there.  Still, I quite like the way it looks.  I just wish Coolermaster would do a modern take on the awesome ATC 201B SXT (which I currently own and is bursting at the seams, holding a dual socket board >_<).

Having had a look around, I am pondering the Lian-Li PC-A77 now. Clean, Huge, and I think I could wegde a 120.3 Rad in the top too. The downside is it is bloody expensive though. I think £154 is the cheapest I could find it at a reputable supplier.

I suspect if I buy this, my board acquisition list will go on a fairly long hiatus though.

154 pounds is a lot of money. Make sure you really like that keyboard before you buy it!

No computer is a full tower if you've ever used an old Gateway 2000 (I have).

I've been really happy with my last case choice, it's the original Antec P180.  The current case is slightly different but I'm sure close to the same.  Probably the last custom PC I will ever build with how cheap new systems are.

My old Thermaltake case is easily that size.

Now this is a full tower -

True - from all I've heard and seen, they were built really well, including the shielding. (>20 kg for the whole system (http://mastodonpc.tripod.com/personal/8580-a31.html) isn't too shabby.) Only the foam block for sound damping should be replaced nowadays.

Yea I have the black original P180 as well best case I've ever had. I'm considering getting the mini version for my next upgrade and converting the current one for my server case. Tons of room for drives I'm thinking raid 10 for the server when I do the change over.

Want...

Almost bought one (with an 8 foot rack) a few weeks ago. Then I remembered it wouldn't fit on the train home.

if you dont have anywhere near the number of rack-mount cases to fill a single rack, i cannot imagine it would be a good idea (functionally or aesthetically)
unless you got it for free or something
but a "free" case can be a lot more creative and useful than something the size of a fridge in your house, housing one computer.

I hack-sawed my free 8-foot rack in half for two 4-foot racks. One was for CPUs and the one with the base was for music studio gear like HD recorders, mic pres, and such.

The computer half of the rack housed two 4RU beasts like webwit's, four 2RU units, and a KVM. It was the VMware TechPubs computer lab in the Workstation5 through ESX 3 era. I loved writing off my gear as business expenses that whole period.

That is one of the silliest-looking computer cases I have ever seen! But I bet it gets good performance, although probably not $140 worth.

IMHO cooler master has built approx. 3 or 4 classy looking computer cases in the company history. The rest are ugggggggly, inclusing my personal cooler master case. They're almost always well-designed, with some of the best cooling you could hope to get in a (premod) case. However, they always insist on accompanying the great cooling with some of the most gaudy, wretched, childish design cues- ones that only a 12 year old boy with ADD would be drawn to.

There are worse examples of this, but CM gets special reconnition for actually making GREAT cases, then taking those great, well-built cases and making them look like $5 toys.

edit: this was a bit off-topic. sry bout that. congrats on the M :)

My pc is built in a 4U 19 inch server case. I don't care how it looks. It's black, huge and makes yours look like toys :) It is located in a server cabinet in another room where I have some other bulky hardware, I connect to it from my workspace with long cables for the monitor, usb, etc. I rarely need access to the case.

(Not this one but quite similar)

I sold my 42u rack a while back. I got out of outsourced 3D rendering (Energy bills way up, piecerate way down. I would have ended up costing me to do it), and couldn't justify keeping that kind of horsepower around to play with considering what I sold it for. It was also "too bloody loud" according to my other half.

If I ever had more than 2 rigs again, it would be back to 4u racks, and a DC pump for the watercooling.

this thread has turned into "suggest a case for my picky needs"

lol

ps I'm thinking of maybe painting my model m to black mainly because everything else in my computer room is black. Any tips or suggestions on that?

Yeah, we tend to go on a tangent quicker than a psychotic trigonometry professor.

As for the model M colour change, just get an M13 (http://pds9.egloos.com/pds/200806/01/50/d0049650_4841edff3d546.jpg), as the cases on M's are not suited to Rit Dye (the keys take it well though). Painting... well, it's your keyboard, but personally, I'd rather not, (I had flaking problems with mine, and it was done with decent automotive paint by a body shop, and baked properly).

Get an M13, I predicted it will happen, and it will. Your wallet will hate this site, and it doesn't actually sell anything. Let us know when you get one. You will love it. If you want a new one, Unicomp do one, but the pointer is generally regarded as inferior (and some say the build quality, but I can't comment as I don't own one). Otherwise, check the classifieds here, and ebay.

Bandwidth is very cheap here and only broadband so some stuff I used to host elsewhere moved to my servers at home
I know. the UK sucks at providing decent bandwidth for a reasonable price. Caps make me cry though, my plan is 300GB off peak (5PM-9AM) and 30GB peak monthly. it's not cheap, but it suffices for now. Fiber would be my ideal solution, but that won't happen in my area for a while.

Hehehe I can't help but grin when I think of the deal I got on mine. Let's just say "I could afford it and don't have the slightest complaint", and I normally complain if a keyboard costs more than about 5 dollars.

I really want to call you 4 letter words right about now!

Still, I was happy with the price I paid for mine (£75). It was in perfect condition too. Although I am not sure if it's my best keyboard (it's close though), it's certainly the coolest.

Only problem with those is they have some of the crappiest rubber dome keyboards on the planet. My folks have a computer with one of those that they've been using for 6 years and it feels terribly.
