This is an interest check for a split orthlinear keyboard inspired by the planck. It will have rgb underglow and the option to have i2c interconnect.
This thread is to voice your opinions on the direction the project should go. I am unsure about if I will try to do a GB or sell through a vendor.
PCB prototypes are out and will be coming soon. Should have the prototype in by next month.

(http://i.imgur.com/z59aHCr.png) sorry. I love renders
As of now the plan is 2 steel/aluminum plates with a frosted acrylic mid-piece.
(http://i.imgur.com/eupzFgs.jpg?1) hand wired prototype
Iv been going a little crazy on the pcb front. I have designed 2 pcb's. One has all throughole components and would allow for all people to solder a bare pcb. The other option is a more traditional keyboard pcb that allows for a much cleaner look, but will be harder to have produced after a GB is over. Think gh60 vs ergodox and phantom
I have made a strawpole for pcb opinions. also the pcb has the same dimensions as the ghpad, so numpad support may be cool http://www.strawpoll.me/10379210 (http://www.strawpoll.me/10379210)
Also with recent events running a groupbuy as a new face may be pretty difficult so I want to see how people want me to release this! http://www.strawpoll.me/10379306 (http://www.strawpoll.me/10379306)
UPDATE 1: Its now a collab folks Dotdash has designed an awesome case to go with the double rainbow!

Dotdash case!
In other news we now have alps support!
UPDATE 2: just got the first prototypes in! (http://i.imgur.com/92I1rbt.jpg)

Definitely interested and would buy :thumb:
-
Pretty cute!
-
looks sick !
-
That would be the day when we can somehow figure out how to type with our wrists laying on this while we simultaneously use a second split with our fingers :p
Awesome renders, will be watching this one through :thumb:

Interested as well.

Interested as well.
Glad to hear! what woould be your prefered release avenue? MD? independent GB? retail?

TMK/QMK as software to flash layouts would be spectacular. Love the idea and looks so far

Thanks! It runs on modified TMK atm.

does this come with belt loops?
-
does this come with belt loops?
If you buy belt loops and gets delivered on the same day. Then it comes with belt loops.
-
I was just wanting something like this yesterday, so I'm definitely interested.
-
Looks really slick. I'm interested!
-
Looks nice. May be interested in it, for travel purposes, as it looks easier to transport than an ErgoDox.
-
You have my interest.
-
"Double Rainbow"
You... I like you. You're my kind of people.

MD or independent its good for me :)
-
Any interest in a milled aluminum case? I should have some time this summer to develop one.
Edit: The case will also have magnets in its sides to connect to other Double Rainbows! The plate is ALPS and Cherry compatible, with Costar stabs for the 2u keys in the corners. The case has magnets in both sides, and does not have a handedness. Any case will work with any other, there are no "special" left or right cases!
-
I would be in for one. They look awesome!
-
Is it going to use Atmega32U4?
I'm in, but only if PCBs can be bought separately.
-
On the pcb you should put in the following "...what does it mean?"
-
"It's so beautiful!"

Added polls:)
-
Some options on some 2x keys along the bottom row could be appreciated.
Your poll mentioned components -- I'm personally comfortable soldering them on, and don't care about surface mount vs. through-hole; both have some real advantages for their circumstances. I just don't want to deal with at TQFP controller chip, is all.
Programmatically, will these be attached to each other and then to the computer? Or will each one have to be programmed separately, then attached with a different USB cable? I could be okay about either, but some allowance for daisy chaining them, whether as both-USB or using a different USB cable for I2C communication like the ergodox halves, could attract a few more people; namely those who don't want a bunch of cables cluttering their desk.
If this ever makes it to production, I'm guessing you'll have a number of people wanting three, or one. Gaming controllers, spares, what have you -- make sure to leave some room for that.
Someone else asked about the 32u4, but I was assuming for the size, you'd use the 32u2 ... Let us know so we can consider how hard it will be to write our hoped-for layouts and shove them into this thing.
...I'm interested.

Il look into the 32u2! also adding more layouty options may be a good idea. The current pcb that is being produced has a sata cable connecting the 2 halves allowing for i2c and rgb data both ways.

I am interested, would like the option to have one 2u spacebar on each half.

That seemed like a popular feature. It has been added into the pcb design.

added updated pcb design

Just checking if you are considering a split preonic (5x7)?

Just checking if you are considering a split preonic (5x7)?
Nothing like that atm. Im taking it one GB at a time right now.
-
added case deign from dotdash and alps support.
-
yes please!
Especially interested in separate pcbs myself, thanks!
-
PCB's are in!
-
Would be a neat macro pad.

These are just prototypes. I am trying to be clear on where I am in the development stage. The final revision is still a few months off most likely :)

I do want at least one of these, but have a request: please make the magnets easily removable or optional. I will probably will use one at an electronics bench, and try to avoid things that need to be kept away from other things. I do just fine screwing things up on my own - the last thing I need is a literal attractive nuisance near tiny ferrous objects.
-
I like the design.
But please add switch opening possibilitys!
Would be an neat and outstanding feature

I will be be makibng the magnets removable

It supports alps, so switch top removal will be supported
-
Is in switch led supported as well? I don't see the holes for it in the PCB
-
So also for mx? If so nice to hear
-

I think this will take only mx-compatible switches, so naturally.
-
As the guy who designed the plate, it uses the MX and ALPS pattern, which allows for the mounting of both MX and ALPS styles. There is also enough space on the sides for MX switches to open. This pattern is the one with the little corners in the sides, the second option on Swillkb for reference.
-
I saw on r/Mk that it can support cr2032 coin cells. Can you tell us more on the Bluetooth capabilities?

Oh, and switch top removal. Great!

Thats a different person.
-
added case render
-
Some thoughts about this:
Can each half operate independently?
You should upload a video online demoing the board............in the style of the original Double Rainbow clip
You mentioned daisy chaining....if I buy two sets, can I daisy chain them all together for double double rainbow?
-
Interested!
Do you think that would be possible to have the case a bit less tall?
-

The case, at current dimensions, is only .574" tall from bottom to top of the switch plate. It might be possible to reduce it a bit, but it's not much taller than the average Planck, according to my measurements.

I'd love something like this but would want something with a 5x6 grid instead of 4x6. Does anyone know if anyone has plans for or has done a pair of 5x6s?

Exactly. I are currently looking for a split ortholinear that offers 5x6. There are plenty of split plancks but none for the preonic or the atomic.

What about https://www.reddit.com/r/mechmarket/comments/6arvyi/gb_mitrosis_diy_kit/
not an split Atomic, but it has many THUMB BUTTONS :p

GREAT FIND! Love the idea of bare PCB as a plate.
That's an extremely nice & minimal setup, but not what i am looking for. Too few switches. (23 per side, that's still 40% territory)

this is great... i love the frosted white !!!
are the keys also with rgb led?
i definitly would buy this keyboard if the keys are also rgb and it would had some kind of case like this
https://de.aliexpress.com/item/Customized-YMDK-60-Kit-61-Programmable-Underglow-RGB-Led-PCB-For-GH60-DIY-Mechanical-Keyboard-Bface/32813272960.html
also a wrist rest like the digma raise would be great.... maybe also a symetrical alternative would be cool!
