Title: O-Rings 1.5mm or 2.0mm
Post by: riko on Thu, 02 June 2016, 19:15:54
Massdrop is having a drop on o-rings right now (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/50shorea-o-rings). Which should I pick the 1.5mm or the 2.0mm? What are your thought on this? Thank you.

Thinner and softer is better in my opinion, but I am not really a Cherry guy.

I must be missing something, why is this a thing? O-rings are dirt cheap and can be bought everywhere. What makes the massdrop desirable over just ordering some normally?

Get 1.5mm, the 2.0 is going to reduce the key travel so much that the feel the key switch will feel bleh. The larger o-ring will also make it way more mushy. The 1.5mm will reduce it a little bit and add a bit of cushion.

1.5 is probably all you'd need. I don't like them quite as much for tactile or clicky switches but for linear like gateron reds, I like them as they give you a bump stop prior to bottoming.

You're also able to buy them for ~$1 shipped elsewhere. ;)

Because of the sizes they have. That's why am asking. I think 1.5mm are like the common size you get everywhere in internet, like WASD blues. Maybe I'm wrong on that.

Don't forget about the hardness either. fohat.digs mentioned he liked them softer and that seems to be the consensus from a lot of people.  Those $1 cheap ones often don't advertise their hardness, but are likely anywhere from 50A-70A.  The Massdrop ones are listed at 50A.  If you want something softer, you'll have to look elsewhere.

If you haven't already, stop by Lpwl's sub forum (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=189.0).  He has some more info on hardness and thickness.  The keycaps you want to use will also play a roll.  Caps like SignaturePlastics DSA caps don't have the X support beams under them and the o-rings sink down further.
