Title: [IC] Matrix Pad
Post by: mrbishop on Mon, 06 June 2016, 13:50:54
Something ive been tinkering with for abit. i do alot of design work using various software. all of them have hot keys which do make things easier but are often not usually easily accessible via a single hand. this means in order to hit certain keys you have to take your hand off the mouse/trackpad/trackball. which is annoying. i also do a fare amount of FPS gaming.

rev1 was built for use with a teensy 2.0 both for simplicity on myself and for cost of manufacturing. oh yeah will make everything open source as soon as i stop being lazy and upload the files to github

i look forward to your thoughts.

This looks pretty interesting. Do you have a case design to go with it yet?

No not yet. I will probably do a sandwich or skeleton case to start with.  Something nice and heavy. So likely having a thick aluminum bottom plate regardless. Guess I need to get back to my 3d cad software and get a design done lol

This *is* cool!  Been looking at supplemental keyboards a lot lately.  Another one on the list LOL

want to really blow your mind. i was poking at it earlier and putting 2 together may give you a two part full blown keyboard similar to the ergodox and others. not the original design but may be possible.

forgive the low quality render but here is a 1.5mm 6mm 1.5mm case design. its a quick and dirty design but should do the job.

Really like this for gaming, I tried using a numpad and remapping, but I always felt like I needed more keys around WASD besides what I had on a numpad

i hear ya. and i figured a 5x5 matrix plus some side keys would be more than enough for lots of good stuff ;)

if i keep getting positive feedback i'll start moving towards a GB

moving forward with this... in carbon fiber  :thumb:

this is rev 2 of the design. i wanted to give it abit of a stealth bomber feel.

hope you guys like cuz i'm cutting it either way xD

interesting I like everything but the teensy, have you looked at a arduino nano instead?

somewhat. i'm looking to run QMK on this and i know it plays nice with anything AVR but is the arduino nano do HID native or is it emulated?

long term goals would be to throw an ATMega32u4 on their directly and scrap the teensy. or do something like a USB128 for more ports and maybe bluetooth onboard. but again... long term goals if this goes anywhere

well that depends on the version of the arduino some are atmega32u4 others run the atmega328p

i'm going to assume the 32u4 is the one with native HID and USB out not the emulation stuff. i'm all for recommendations. if it fits it ships  :thumb:

What kind of purpose keyboard?

this macro pad ?

wait for answer.

so my thoughts on this are for gaming and for use with applications that have lots of shortcut keys that are spread all over the keyboard. bringing them all into one place for one handed operation. i do most of my design work in Fusion360 and like most CAD programs the shortcut keys make sense but are all over the place causing me to have to look down and move my left hand to the key or take my hand off my mouse to press the shortcut key. very annoying.

the plan is to load it with QMK and have breakouts to add other things to it. but v1 gen1 will probably just be hand wired. i still need to tweak the PCB more. i have some ideas for RGB lighting using addressable LED's and such.

that said you could load it with whatever each key could be anything QMK/TMK can produce.

so after getting both pushed and help from a friend. still needs to do some looking to ensure everything works right. but my virtual prototype is done.

I'd be interested in one of these once it becomes concrete.

Looks awesome! I'd love to see a design with a wrist rest integrated into the build.  Either wood, or something. If not,  I'm sure I'd be down to check out just the PCB.

the wrist rest is intigrated into the case but it might be cool to do a stand alone wrist rest like the early eargodox versions.  :thumb:
