Title: Has anyone built a Surge protector ?

I know you can buy one..

Looking through amazon.. 

I feel like.. I just don't TRUST the sellers..  Lots of fancy jargon and --feature-- stuff that I know fundamentally has nothing to do with Surge-protection,

Thoughts? Geekhack EEs...

Probably more of a hassle than anything.

I'd recommend going with Panamax if you do purchase one. I've owned mine for a few years now (M5300-PM) and it's fantastic. The power conditioning is nice, and has keep my Amp, Pre-Amp, and TV safe and sound.

Alternatively, shop around for something medical grade, as that'll be the best option IMO (Tripp Lite comes to mind)

Just buy one from a reputable manufacturer. With an attached device warranty. Then you're Gucci.

I have an 8 socket Belkin one and I'm happy with it.  :thumb:

yea I'm reading into the device warranty stuff,

It seems quite the many hoops if you want to get reimbursed..

I don't trust the insurance guys, so much hassle..

Do I really need power conditioning ? I thought that's only necessary if you live in very dense, or very old part of the power grid..

Do I really need power conditioning ? I thought that's only necessary if you live in very dense, or very old part of the power grid..

It'll definitely help against those things, but it also helps protect from local devices that draw a lot of energy too (such as fridge, washer, dryer, ac, etc.) as it'll regulate the voltage when it drops.

EDIT: To clarify, it's great to have, but definitely not needed.

Hrrmm.. I do have 3 fridges..  but two are on garage lines and one in the kitchen..

none of the computers share that cable..

hrrmm... does that introduce jitter to the mains..

But I believe Computer PSU are designed to work with +/- 20% voltage , I don't think the main would be droppable by 30volts..
