I know that iTerm has better features, etc., but a couple of reviews state that the standard Terminal is faster.. I'm not a developer, but I do use the terminal to 'ssh' to the linux file server to keep it updated, etc. One of things that I like about OS X.. The terminal is infinitely more powerful than the Windows commands prompt.
This is just a fact finding thread. Anyone here has any opinions on iTerm?

I've used iTerm for years, but with switching to El Capitan I've switched to Apple's Terminal as well. I believe that some termcodes ("whispering") are not always emulated properly and die hard unixers give blame to Terminal for that, but for the work I do I don't require a perfect Terminal emulator.
I like Terminal more now, it feels a bit more light weight. But if you need specific features of you have special desires, iTerm will probably just provide you with anything you want out of the box. It's really an awesome app.

I use both - iTerm2 for most general purpose activities, and Terminal for one or two things where I want to keep a separate window away from my iTerm2 windows.
I also have Cathode installed for retro giggles, although it is a lot slower than iTerm2 and Terminal.

I haven't noticed any speed difference between iterm2 and terminal. Most of my time is spent ssh'ing into linux boxes.

I used to be really big with iTerm, but now I just use Terminal. I like that there are a couple of repos on Github that theme your console after Solarized

Oh, if anyone wants iTerm2 themes, I can highly recommend this little collection: https://github.com/mbadolato/iTerm2-Color-Schemes
