Title: And yet another reason never to visit Florida - gator will eat your toddler
Post by: noisyturtle on Wed, 15 June 2016, 15:52:34
People choose to live and visit there? Why? Literally everything I ever hear about Florida is negative.

you should go on /r/floridaman sometime.

I do feel bad for the family, but that doesn't mean it isn't their fault. I'm just sorry that child had to be born to such stupid people.

you just contradicted yourself there

I don't think it was the parents fault either, two year olds are a handful for sure and of course he'd want to play by the water. And they ran in trying to get him back, not bad parents just a really rare and ****ty happening.

But my point on Florida still stands. First Grimmie's murder, then the biggest mass shooting in US history, now babies getting eaten by dinosaurs. Florida seems like Hell this week.

Yeah, I have kids and they definitely are a handful, but I'd sure as **** be a lot more careful around a sign that said Beware of Alligators.

I knew a guy from Florida. He called it "God's waiting room" because it's full of old people. He said it's very boring there.

I probably also wouldn't be able to cope with the heat - I get uncomfortable quickly above 20 C (68 F)  :)) .

How do you get that the family was stupid?  We were at that resort, and saw all sorts of people down there on the shore after the outdoor movie night.  It just says no swimming, and nothing about alligators.  I was surprised to hear that it was even a problem in that area.

It's getting up to almost 90 F in the day time right now.

I hate the heat so much.  :'(

Going outside is a chore.

I'm sorry if it's an unpopular opinion and using stupid was me being a bit too callous, I'm sure there might have been other factors at play that I'm not aware of. I am not a parent, so I really cannot comprehend the horror and sorrow of knowing my child was snatched up by a big scary wild animal to die in a very brutal and scary way. The hard reality is this could have been prevented by keeping a closer eye on one's kid. They were only a few hundred feet from their hotel and I'm sure thousands of people have walked by that same spot with no problem. Hell if they weren't from Florida I could easily believe they didn't even know alligators were in the lake. I just find incidents like this and the one in Cincannati all the more tragic since they seem so avoidable in the first place.

Almost 90? It's like that pretty frequently in Chicago. Then again, it may not be as humid.

Also, please don't assume it's always 100% the parents' fault. Those little ****s are fast, and when you're tired you're never quick enough.

That said, those warning signs definitely would've made me a little more cautious.

Summers here in Sacramento, CA creep up into the 110's.

A few coworkers from Arizona said that if it's anything below 90 at night.. it's a good night lol

You do know that they were close enough that the father actually fought the alligator for the child?  And that alligators are quite quick when going after a meal?  Do you know that they didn't have an eye on the child?  Or is that an assumption based on no proof?

Quote
His father jumped in and tried to pry the gator's mouth open. His mother jumped in, too.

That shows that they were quite close.  And considering that the child apparently died of drowning with few bite marks on him, I think your supposition is quite incorrect.

See the chair a little bit from the water line?  Sure it says no swimming, but people do wade, and get their feet in the water.  I've seen it.

I just noticed this thread.. I grew up in Florida and people don't swim in the lakes for fun, (springs are different; you can spot them quickly) they're swimming because they fell in for some reason. If you visit Florida, your kids should be away from the lakes. One football length is sufficient. Doesn't matter what lake or pond you're around, if they stock it with fish gators will move in. Alligators can run 25mph in short bursts; most people don't know this. So far Crocodiles haven't reached the northern coasts but there are some in Miami so just be wary of your surroundings and all that stuff.

I'm not trying to make Florida seem like a lost world of death; it's just that Alligators are frickin' living dinosaurs, for christ's sake they eat turtles  (seriously, turtles..)

They actually rent these little "mouse boats" at that same location... we saw people zipping around on them.

This guy on NY Post says it better than I.

https://nypost.com/2016/06/20/alligator-attack-has-shaken-longtime-vacationers-trust-in-disney/

But there's another post about the legal responsibilities of Disney, and their exposure for lawsuits, that's very much in line with your statement, i.e.

Quote
That Disney’s resorts are populated by out-of-staters who are unfamiliar with alligators should also have been considered in warnings and signage, Shiner says. “In Florida, we know not to jump in,” he says.
