Hello
Got my first MK this past Christmas (2015), a Das Keyboard 4 Ultimate Mechanical Keyboard with Cherry MX Blues. I love it!
I'm in the process of making a macropad now. Going to do a clone of this one! https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/3zsf4k/photos_handwired_macro_pad_with_round_5_caps/
Thinking I might use a Trinket as the controller and AutoHotKey to manage my macros

Welcome. Autohotkey for managing a custom built macropad? But why? Why not use a teensy and flash your TMK/QMK goods onto the macropad? Teensy can't hold all the characters? Forgive me if I seem noobish; I've yet to build a keyboard.

Chances are I'm the noob.
Currently I use a trinket to run keyboard commands like "Win+Alt+F1" which then AutoHotKey parses to open Putty with auto log in with SSH key auth.
Can TMK/QMK do those kinds of multi-key-press macros?

TMK/QMK could probably handle Win+ALT+F1. Now I kind of understand why you would want to use AHK ^-^

Yeah I use AHK for a ton of multi-key macros!

Welcome to Geekhack!
I'm not sure about the TMK firmware, but there's a whole thread (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=41989.0) about it - you can ask your questions there for an informed and accurate response.
