Title: Review of “TF 77 StarWars Edition”
Post by: simonyunhe on Wed, 29 June 2016, 09:19:48
After I post some pictures about this new board, lost of people show their positive support and told me to write a review about this board. So, here you go!

PCB:
This pcb called Transformer v2.1 and this is the third version. The pcb is design by DD from the Chinese MK community. The specialty of the pcb is you can break it to get the layout you want. Layout like 40/60/68/77/84/96/Pad, even the splits are all covered.

This 1.0 version (2016.1.1) of the pcb is based on PS2AVRgb and the layout is basic a traditional 96 board plus extra column at the left of the pcb. It supports 40/60/77/84/96/Pad and the pcb is fit for RS96 case. The bug on this version is the whole for led is too small.

Version 2.0 (2016.2.24) is mainly for stability, fix the bugs from last version and add extra column which 68/split are supported. There are still small bugs which the whole for stabilizer is put at the wrong position.

When version 2.1 (2016.5.10) is made, I give DD some suggestions to change the layout for more keycaps compatibility (especially for the split layout). This time the board is stable and close to perfect.

Case:
DD don't really have a good solution for the case at this moment and the majority of people just have their own idea to make the case. What DD told me is that he has a full time job and he mainly focus on the compilation of the pcb now and he will try to get something in the future.

My case is a "Sandwich" structure build from stainless steel and acrylic. Top and bottom steel are plate in gun mental grey, the there's mistake happens when bottom plate is made. So DD decided to put a "carbon fiber" sticker on the plate and it superisely turns out better than we thought. The acrylic middle part is contract from two pieces, 8mm black acrylic + 3mm transparent acrylic with laser cut Stormtrooper Head + "geekhack.org" in StarWars font. Bottom plate also cut out contours to let the RGB light go through.

Firmware:
The firmware used is BootMapperClient, fully programable and couple led model to control the bottom RGB led.

If you have other question about the PCB or my TF 77 board. Please feel free to leave the comments, I will happy to answer it! Thanks for the support! Good day! ;D

Wow, what an ambitious PCB design. I love the idea.

And the board itself looks great as well. Very nice. =)

Talk to DD and he plan to have the GB alive after the Chinese Spring Festival, something like middle of Feb. He is working with 2.2 PCB now.

The price for PCB (with all the SMD) will between $40-60. Cases are still the problem since there are so many directions to go.
