Title: Long time lurker first time poster from California
Post by: greenteei89 on Sat, 02 July 2016, 16:25:07
I just started in to the mechanical keyboard game a few months ago. While ive been on reddit mechanical keyboards for a month or two, I decided that I had to make an account here as well. I bought my first mech only two months ago and have already burned a tiny hole in my pocket. From the QFR with mx blues to the Magicforce with mx blues to the pok3r with mx browns I think I may be hooked  :-X. Really looking forward to learning more and hopefully getting help in my future project of making a 60% aekii!

Welcome to Geekhack!

Some good keyboards you have already :)

The 60% AEKII sounds an interesting project.  You'd need an AEKII (obviously), a plate (unless you can cut down the AEK plate).  A case (unless you want to cut down the AEK case, although that kind of shenanigans doesn't usually end well).  Or perhaps you can find an existing case that would fit the plate and controller that you choose.

Finding a plate is probably the first step, and deciding whether you want to have a PCB or make it hand-wired.  Probably.

What would I know - I've never built a keyboard :p

Yup! Thanks for stopping by. I already have the AEKII and have been reading like crazy. I saw some build images on geekhack that interested me. So far I am thinking about cutting out the plate and pcb. Then wiring it up to a teensy 2.0. The biggest issues I have come up with so far are how to mount it into a case and how I am going to connect it to the teensy. I feel like the easiest way will be to desolder the switches and handwire it. BUT, I did see someone that said it would be possible to keep the pcb and somehow do stuff with the traces and wire it though there...

Hi, welcome. Moar projects! Joking.. Kind of.. Would you say that like you like the MX Blues more than the MX Browns or are you still considering your options?

Whichever way you go, feel free to create a build thread in making stuff together (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=117.0) so we can follow your progress.  Mentioning AEKII might even get some of the Alps guys' attention, and they might have some valuable suggestions about the PCB traces.
