Just here to hang out for a bit.
I haven't done any lurking or research, but I have been on an HHK Pro2 for 5 years. I'm interested in seeing what else is out there.

I'm very familiar with GAS when participating in some other hobbies I have (arcade pcb/cabs, guitar amps) so hopefully this won't get too out of hand.

How has the HHKB held up after 5 years? Many people here use HHKB, but there's not many anecdotes of how they survive years of use.
Mine was born in 2011, but I got it secondhand 2 or 3 years ago, so I don't know how much use it has had in that time. It still works perfectly, although there was a little shine on the space bar, so I replaced it with a PBT one.

I bought mine from EliteKeyboards in April of 2011. I would say it has the normal amount of wear... I travel for work 5 to 7 times a year. No issues with the USB connector. I generally use one of the USB extension ports for a YubiKey. The hhkb is dark gray with the dark gray keycaps. I'm happy to report that the switches still sound like they did on day one! I occasionally pull a keycap or 2 for spot cleaning. The keys are holding up just fine but unfortunately my spacebar is very shiny... maybe they used a different type of plastic for it?
Overall I'm very happy with it and after about 6 months I was more or less comfortable with the smaller layout... I would like to have the option to get my arrow keys back though.

Yes, the space bar is ABS, whereas the rest of the keys are PBT.
ABS does shine quite easily, so it's odd that they chose to make the space bar out of it considering that it gets used so often.
A while back it used to be difficult to make larger keys, especially space bars, out of PBT as it would shrink and warp as it cooled. That problem has largely gone away now, and matt3o designed some excellent coloured PBT space bars for the HHKB :)
Thanks for the report on how your HHKB has held up - I haven't heard of one dieing yet, although a couple of people have reported that an older HHKB feels different to a newer one.

so here's a super noobish question....
how do people here learn touch typing on 40s? any good programs or typing sites specifically for different keyboard layouts?
I really like the look of the Van or JD but not sure how much of a learning curve it will be. Coming from an HHK hopefully not much.

Touch typing on any keyboard is the same - 99% of touch-typing is alphabetic. With the digits, you'd get used to the function layer for those pretty quickly, I'd imagine.

A 40% keyboard would probably be less intimidating for someone that wants to learn to touch type. I started on a 122 key monster (the only familiar keys were the Alphas :confused:), but when I learned how to type the proper way some years later we used normal ANSI 104 keyboards. Much less intimidating imho

I'm pretty decent with letters and numbers on a "regular" keyboard (had to learn in school with a cardboard box covering our hands). I'm not sure if I will get used to all the modifiers/functions for different symbols, numbers, etc.
Will I have to press like 3 or 4 keys just to get to the @ symbol? Are the function presses like chording or in a sequence?

Sheez I couldn't even tell you how long ago I got my first HHKB, I still have the box (blue and purple). Must have been 2001-2003 because It's got my old email address from when I was working at EarthLink cruedly drawn on the bottom in silver sharpie.

A black Mac - curious! I haven't seen a black one before. I've seen a few mods done to them, but that one looks neat!

It's painted, that's been done.
The hacky bit is it's a 'classic' era Mac that been upgraded to a G4, DVD and *grayscale* VGA. ;)

Ah, paint. Could have been done a few ways.
And occasionally Apple does produce a very limited run of an unusual colour machine.

posting in my own newbie thread because I don't think it deserves it's own. BUT.... I did my first repair today.
Spacebar stabs were not working right at all on a used keyboard I got off of mm. PCB is a nerd 2.0 with plate mounted 65g zealios.
I took the case off and just tested pulling up on the keystem (is the the correct term for the shaft part?) on each side. When pulling up, the other side would not engage. I was pretty sure that the metal bar was just not clipped in correctly.
SO... I have attempted enough electronic projects to know that I suck at soldering.. I'm even worse at desoldering. Instead of going down that road, I decided to see if I could somehow get at the metal bar and pull it to the stab connectors. My first try was silly as I attempted via sewing thread. I had too much trouble trying to loop it around.
What ended up working was the tiniest sized allen wrench that I had on hand. Think this... (http://www.harborfreight.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/i/m/image_19723.jpg). I was able to navigate the allen wrench between the plate and the PCB and hook around to pull the metal towards the spacebar.
SUCCESS! Doing this on each side snapped them both into place and now it's working great!

5 Years on an HHKB?? That is crazy the longest thing I have stuck with on my peripherals are my speakers! I just recently bought my second HHKB (sold my first one as I did not like it at the time) But I am loving it now! I hope to keep mine for 5 years or more!

well...even though I was working in IT at the time, I was not active in the mech keys community at all. I was in the market for a keyboard and bought a few different kinds to try out (one of the others was a type matrix 2030).
The HHKB stuck and I just continued using it.... didn't think much about anything else out there. This thing is quiet enough for the office when I'm onsite, performs beautifully, small footprint, and as a bonus it looks badass too. I think the only thing that would make me give it up would be a type-S... but I have yet to try one.

I actually have dental banded mine to give it the type-s feel, I used some 1/8 Thin bands from amazon (I think it cost like 6$). And it did wonders! Now my next move might be to trade it for a white blank type s, or a normal white blank board and just band that one. I defiantly love the sound of the banded one, and I did not notice the change in travel distance either!
