Coming out of my mom
Tribes. Multiplayer FPS where you could fly, pilot vehicles, taker passengers, and say really odd taunting phrases. I know Half-Life came out the same year but I just remember having a lot more fun flying around with my friends in Tribes.Show Image(http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/tribes/images/2/22/Starsiege_Tribes_13.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20110808190009)
Oh, and of course, Brood War.
What an oddly specific year.
Starcraft definitely, and then a tough second between Ocarina of Time and Half Life.
What an oddly specific year.
IMO the best year for gaming ever. So many fantastic long-time franchises were started, and meaningful squeals that actually changed beloved franchises for the better instead of delivering more of the same.
1998 was right on the precipice of the big leap to 3D, with a lot of developers taking chances with new play styles and mechanics. You also see some of the strong 2D titles releases, as well as the big advent of PC gaming which really took off in '98 with the absolute glut of amazing games released. '98 changed the direction of game development from that year forward.
Half-Life^This ! To this day, I still shiver when hearing headcrabs...
I played the **** out of that game, and it left me with a lasting impression. I still remember it fondly to this day, and I'd say it's one of the games I've enjoyed played the most.
Can I say Total Annihilation: The Core Contingency? The (best of all time) multiplayer component (sorry SC fanboys) didn't really reach its zenith until the addon pack came out.True. I always have preferred TA's gameplay to SC's.
Unreal.
Because Unreal. You have to play it to know what it's all about.
Toss up between Tenchu, Metal Gear and Half-life for me.Oooh Tenchu was so much fun!
Starcraft
Still play it occasionally.

I saved up and bought a PS2 and GranTourismo in Feb of 99 so i think for 1998 it was really more like Quake2 maybe and Starcraft. I dont think Diablo2 came out till 1999 either. The first Gran Turismo for PS2 was GT3 A-spec which was released in 2k1 if I remember correctly. It is the only game I completed 100 % on that console.

+1, Starcraft 2 on the other hand, was less than stellar. too little, too late.
At first I thought this was a silly question, but then I looked up a list of releases in 1998.
Ocarina of Time, Banjo-Kazooie, Half Life, Star Craft, and many more...
