I registered yesterday and lurked a bit, now I'm just saying hello. :D
I don't personally own a mech but I've been lurking /r/Mechanicalkeyboards and plan on getting one soon.

Welcome to Geekhack!
Which keyboard are you looking at? Have you decided on a switch yet?
Thing is, there are so many to choose from! But if you look after the keyboard once you get it, and eventually decide you don't like it, you can usually sell it for not much less than you originally paid for it and chalk the difference up to experience.
Or, if you can get along to a meetup, you can often try many different keyboards, switches, layouts and keycaps in one place :)

Thanks! I'm looking at the Varmilo VA87MR on massdrop right now with gateron/cherry green switches since I'm pretty hard on keyboards. If I miss that I'm also thinking about a pok3r with green switches.
I'm also considering building a B.Mini or a Varmilo VA68M, not as a first mech though, more when I know for sure what switch I like.

There's good reports about the Varmilo, and they even have a vendor forum (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=192.0) here - some great feedback.
The Pok3r is also an excellent keyboard.
Hint: you might end up with both eventually ;)

Heh, I wouldn't be surprised if I end up with both. The RGB Pok3r's and super tempting, if I choose to get one I might just try out browns.

That's a great idea to try different switches!
Look after the boards, keep them super clean, if you fisd you don't like the switch you should be able to resell it for nearly what you paid, and chalk the difference up to experience :)
Or use the extra boards as display boards for keycaps.
