Title: Whose Idea at topre was it to make all spacebars 6u?!

This got to be the most annoying design choice for my HHKB, it makes using custom sets in the future so limited because of some weird need to have an odd spacebar size.

Why would you use a custom set though? Stock HHKB caps + PBT spacebar = best.

ikr if it was 7u it would make the entire board more symmetrical too

however there's one other thing that topre has done that grinds my gears and that's the rotated stem on the left ctrl key on realforces.... and not only is it rotated, the entire stem and stem housing is different which makes silencing with rings ineffective

what were they thinking

Sets like skeletor will look out of place, and SA sets are for the most part a no go. SAD!

When designed they probably never imagined that enthusiasts would swap sliders and then replace all the keycaps.

Seriously. 6u is a ****ing enormous spacebar. For shame indeed. They should be 2.5u x 1.5u instead.

I think it's adequately sized. Both thumbs rest on there easily and it doesn't take as much room. In fact, we can probably make it even smaller. 5.5u?

For those of us who prefer a sensible layout and keycaps with more personality than an IBM model M (from which all of today's boring-ass cylindrical keycaps derive), Topre will (hopefully) have their Filco-layout, MX-stemmed board out by the end of the year (6.25u spacebars and SA keycap compatibility, yay!). This won't help the 60%ers out there, but it is nevertheless a step in the right direction.

I purposely chose to use a 6u space bar on my Phantom, using the same key sizes as Topre Realforce and HHKB.
Windows keys are small, Ctrl and Alt keys are 1.5u and exactly where you expect them. That makes the space bar 6u.

6u is the best. Other keyboards are wrong.
